My 1st encounter with BABYMETAL also was this song. And my reaction was quite similar to yours "woha, all fake! does my beloved metal need dancing Japanese girls today to draw any attention at all?"
But the weird combination of things that shouldnt go together but somehow did made me curious. It was something I havent heard (or seen) ever before. A new kind of metal? Newborn metal? Is there more?
What can i say? There was more. A LOT more!
It was a heck of a ride of joy to discover something refreshing new, totally entertaining and unique ("every song is different and yet clearly them"), over disbelieve ("too good to be true") until i got the chance to see them live for the first time a few years ago at a festival ("they really ARE real!!").
Today, for me they are the best live act on this planet (seen them live 2 times this year) with nothing even close. As you can see in the comments I am not alone with this opinion :)

Hahaha, nice! Gimme Chocolate was my first intro to Babymetal and half of me was completely thrown off, and the other half somehow weirdly liked it, which I wasn't sure how I should feel about it. I almost wrote them off as just another gimmick at first, but somehow I was curious enough to watch more videos. Now, I am a huge fan. I will say, ultimately, Babymetal just makes me happy 🤣, and they've done it in a way that most other bands I've loved never have in the past.
Also, a few points to help clarify any confusion:
1). Babymetal will be mentioned in the same breath as all the other bands you've mentioned because they are the pioneers that introduced the West to contemporary J-Rock/J-Metal on a large scale.
2). They started in 2010 and this concert was in 2013, when lead Su-metal just turned 16. Thus, some of their older songs tend to have a more "playful" feel to them (because they were literally 12/11 when they started lol). They are in their mid-20s' today and their newer songs are more mature while maintaining the same level of drive, energy, and fun.
3). This year, they just completed an EU tour with Sabaton and Lordi, a US tour with Dethklok, and back on an EU tour as a headliner at the moment of writing this comment. Along with multiple festivals across the US, EU, and Asia, Babymetal has completed almost 100 shows worldwide to date this year.
4). The only false assessment from you was that Babymetal is definitely singing live: Lead Su-metal sings live ~95% of the time, with minor parts mimed. Backup vocals are mostly live, rarely mimed during intense choreography (and they are always honest about it when they do lip-sync). They do harmonize to their own voices sometimes on a backtrack, and there will be some vocal effects added as well.
5). Unfortunately, this official video from their channel uses live footage with studio audio over the song, which is why you thought they were just miming. In the actual concert Bluray, you can definitely tell they are singing live.
6). At the end of this concert (Legend 1997 in 2013), and all concerts moving forward, they do use a full-on live band (Kami Band), who still plays with Babymetal today. In the 1st 9 songs of this 14-song setlist, they were using actors in skeleton costumes with music played on a track (Gimme Chocolate being one of those). This is because Babymetal just got big in Japan and couldn't afford a live band up until that point. They started on a shoestring budget because their record label saw them as the producer's pet project that was destined to go by the wayside (I mean, who woulda thought the unproven concept of metal + kawaii j-pop would be such a success back in 2010, in Japan where metal was a dying genre?).
7). You will see in other performances why the vocal and performance talent of the girls, the musicianship of the Kami Band, and the entire production is worthy of international acclaim, and why they are de facto, THE most popular Japanese band internationally today, consistently selling out 10K - 55K shows.
React to Road of Resistance (Live 2015 - Saitama Super Arena) - You can do the official version as they do use mixed live audio from the show (vocals and instruments). The fake band has been gone for over a year now, and Kami Band is live and present. You will also get a chance to see how 17/15-year-olds command a sold-out crowd of 20K fans.
Hope you give them a fair shake! 🤘🦊

If you’re having trouble understanding why they’re popular you might need to watch a more current video. Monochrome live is iconic. This is not like a lot of bands where you feel like you could've listened to them at home and skipped the concert, with Babymetal it's all about the show, the crowd interaction, the jumping around and singing along.

I seen them by accident in 2017. Opened for Red Hot Chillis in Manchester...a row of demonic monks on plinths played thrash from back of the stage while these 3 Duracell bunnies danced and sang mental pop. I tell you though...they more than warmed up the room...near stole the show from an aging Chilli vibe. Very memorable. I'm sure, after watching a few of their videos, the YT Al Gore Rhythm brought me to The Band-Maid 'Thrill' MV...their cutesy video, and my first thought was...HAVE BABYMETAL LEARNED TO PLAY INSTRUMENTS :-)) They brought me to Maid Rock...forever grateful and gotta love em for that :-)

In my opinion, Babymetal are in no way "a band," they are more like a Broadway show. They have a costumes, a pit band, dancing and singing, special effects ... it's a production! But, that's what Meat Loaf was, and David Bowie too, so that's not a _bad_ thing.

Btw Saiki and Kobato of Band-Maid are massive fans of his (fangirling hard in one of their "Band-Maid Nippon" radio shows). They kind of got a vicarious link through Tony Visconti. He's a Band-Maid fan and is on record with: "David would have loved this band." Kobato is already competing with Bowie in number of stage personas at this point. :)

Hey Mark, great reaction honestly! I just saw Babymetal like last night in a 3.5k venue here in the UK, so good timing! I'm a big fan these days but it definitely took a few listens and a few different tracks before I 'got it', ya know. They've outstanding live, especially in a 'smaller' venue, without all of the extra production and performance that goes into their big headline shows over in Japan. They've also definitely matured, especially in terms of the outfits and tracks they're putting out these days. Su's voice has always been outstanding, but has also matured and improved a ton over the years. Gimme Chocolate is still a crowd favourite though 😂

Crazy fact: Babymetal had a cameo in the first Super Mario Maker on Wii U. There was an event couse you could clear online to receive their Mystery Mushroom costume. ^_^
As for the song, I love the chorus. It has a very special kind of crescendo (based on leap-by-leap pitch rising) that always mesmerizes meeeee~~~

Great reaction! You pretty much nailed it. Some of the earlier comments have already filled you in on the concept and background. I would also add to the recommendations, "Rondo of Nightmare". It showcases the Eastern Kami Band and is a solo performance of Su. This allows the other girls to take a break. Inversely, the other two girls (Moa and Yui) perform as "Black BABYMETAL" so Su can catch her breath. I'll include a link from the 2014 Budokan shows.
    czcams.com/video/tmMocP99QkQ/video.html
You'll also see hand signs which may look like the "devil horns" used by many metal acts, but are intended to be the sign of the fox/"kitsunes".
    Kitsunes UP!

It usually takes three reactions when you start with Gimme Chocolate I would recommend Monochrome(any of the 3 versions Live, Lyric video, and piano), Tales of the Destinies, and Ijime Dame Zetaii live at Sonisphere 2014 Live is the best way to go or You mention Tom Morello, BabyMetal has a song featuring Tom Morello called Metali, BabyMetal was also featured on a Bring Me The Horizon track called Kingslayer(top 5 if it was a BabyMetal song), and the song that made me a fan was Megitsune

  • @rrahl

I kindof love that you didn't love this song, and pointed out the backing track reliance from their very old days.
I heard this initially almost a decade ago when the video went viral, I thought it was fun and funny in a cool way but didn't care to look for more. A couple of years ago another video of theirs (Road of Resistance - Live in Japan) popped up in my feed, I was curious how they continued and checked it out. They are now one of my favorite bands of all time, just incredible live music/performances.
This is one song from the first large concert put on by them 10+ years ago, and is a very meme-y song. It's what got them a viral audience, that led to performing on main stage at Sonisphere in 2014 for 65000+ festival attendees, that led to a world tour, that led to awards for best new metal band and best live band, that led to 10+ years of them continuing to improve to be the powerhouse they are today. There are hundreds of other examples of their performances that you might enjoy, but I'm going to stick with the one that hooked me on them (Babymetal - Road of Resistance Live in Japan); it's written by Herman Li, and is just epic Babymetal at it's best from their earlier years. If you don't love that you wont love them, so that's what i'd suggest checking out.

BABYMETAL are an Idol trio. In this video they are performing to a pre-recorded track. (The vocals here are from the studio recording.). They now perform with the KAMI BAND, a stable of studio musicians. If you were Japanese, the whole concept would make perfect sense to you, as Idol Pop would have been a constant companion throughout your life.
They are for real. This was just their second video, more than ten years ago. Watch a concert video, like ROAD OF RESISTANCE.

    • @rickwagner-
      @rickwagner- Před 8 měsíci +7

      That's kind of unclear.
The vocals were live at the actual concert, with the music on a backing track for this song.
The music video substituted the studio audio track for music and vocals.

My first reaction to Babymetal, having just discovered the Japanese scene and been blown away by Band-Maid, Lovebites, and Wagakki Band, was very similar to yours.
Two years later I have plenty of respect for them. Hearing Rondo of Nightmare, live at the Budokan, was the turning point. You don't usually see the actual band and the focus tends to be on the singing (which isn't to my taste) and dancing (which doesn't interest me), and the outstanding musicianship going on behind all that is easy to miss. Rondo of Nightmare is an exception where the focus is on the instrumentalists, and even the vocals in that song are excellent in my opinion.
There's also the fact that they were the gateway into the Japanese scene, and the bands you mention at the end, for many people. Doesn't mean we have to like their music, and personally I only like a handful of their songs, but their importance is hard to deny. I just recommend you avoid their popular songs and go for deep-cuts, a bit like with Taylor Swift 😉

I completely blew them off for two years before CZcams started recommending their videos for some reason, and this time around I became hooked. While I don't think that Gimme Chocolate is a bad song necessarily, I certainly wouldn't call it one of their best. Welcome to the Foxhole and BabyMetal journey 🦊🤘🔥
Always glad to see more reactors getting into this amazing group. They're currently rocking out with the Europe and UK Tour for the 2nd time in this year but now with a headlining shows and everyone is having a blast with the setlist, the new songs from latest album and the classic hits, especially GC! either you hate or love it, is a song with crazy amount of views and they don't wanna leave behind in any of their setlist.
Dance choreography and metal had never been seen before and they somehow managed to make it works creating their unique own genre called kawaii-metal (not weeb), mixing Jpop and heavy metal along with many more sub genres and rhythms, you'll have so much fun going through this journey.
This isn't actually live sound, is studio album version over a live performance which was partially live only on the vocals and choreography with backing track sound. They have their own band called Kami Band introduced later on that same show and after that Kami Band become regular at live performance but they're not official members, only these trio are the front women.
BabyMetal is a Japanese metal dance unit created in 2010 under another Jpop/Jrock group called Sakura Gakuin, they had 11 and 12 years old when started this and become independent after 2013, they created their own genre called kawaii-metal mixing Jpop with metal sound and different subgenres along with many more rhythms. Their name is a reference to a new genre and not related to their ages or "baby" faces, is a pun intended play words with "heavy-metal" which sounds similar to "baby-metal".
    They are:
    *SuMetal* lead vocalist, now 25.
*MoaMetal* scream and dance, now 24.
*YuiMetal* scream and dance, former member since 2018.
*MomoMetal* scream and dance, she's 20 and is the new official member since April 1st recently.
    None of them are related.
After 2018 you'll see backup dancers performing along with them but none of them are official members, they don't sing, only dance, but that status change recently like i said.
This was in December 2013 at SuMetal 16th Birthday, the other girls had 14 yo and there was a big party you have seen nothing yet, wait for _"Babymetal Death"._
The backing band here are called "baby-bones", they don't actually play they're just mimicking air playing instrument, later on this same concert and after 2014 you'll see the girls performing with a real band called the Kami Band, more of them later.
Some recommendations for next songs like:
    - _"Road Of Resistance"_ live in Japan official.
    - _Catch Me If You Can_ live at Budokan 2014 (you got a safe to react version with subtitles at GuilhermeCait channel) or...
    - _Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!_ live at this same live performance Legend 1997 in Makuhari Messe Japan when SuMetal is celebrating her birthday becoming a metal goddess queen and leaving her idol jpop form (you can find one at Gans Tomas channel under "Head Bangya" title).
You have more than 60 songs and still more to come. Amuse their label is very hard to deal so if you want to avoid copyright blocked you have "Babymetal Reactor Resource" channel you'll get full original clips of their best live performance with watermarked logo safe to react, look for "Future Plans" vid, follow instructions and you'll get all of them, upload the one with the logo for us and you can watch without it, don't worry for us we already saw all of them.
Your accent is really weird, not sure if you're from the UK or another country but lemme tell you that BM won UK fans since Sonisphere 2014 becoming their 2nd home, and lemme tell you they're far away of weeb culture, in fact many BM fans don't like or never watched anime or consume Japanese culture before meeting BM, so get rid of that idea bc you're having a common prejudice over fans who like this group, I'm not one of those thou, i like anime but I'm not an otaku neither a weeb. And finally just so you know, BM opened up the gates for J-rock and J-metal bands you already reacted and mentioned, there was certainly a before and after they show up with this unique style and blend.
But like i said before this song divides water in terms of recommendations and some fans don't like to suggest as a first time watching, that's why it's better for you to hear at least three songs before doing a final judgement.
I'm gonna try to leave in my next comment where to get safe clips to react if YT allows me to do it.
    See you next time! 🦊🤘🍫

Here's the list of live performance clips usually safe to reacts without any filters so you won't need to rely on live compilations, there might be some exceptions:
      - Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! live at Legend 1997, SuMetal 16th Birthday in 2013, they got MV of this and is fun, but live is a blast.

      - Doki Doki Morning, official MV, their very first song and MV full of kawaiiness, usually is safe to react so try it, if you want a live performance, this is the first proshot version with the Kami Band live at Legend 1999 (YuiMetal and MoaMetal 14th birthday).
      czcams.com/video/BSjv9OYtWZ0/video.html
      - Uki Uki Midnight, this one is a follow up to Doki Doki Morning but way different sound, this is the PV, is super fun but the sound isn't so great but at least is live.
      czcams.com/video/Yj-UQIlqsIQ/video.html
If you want better sound with the Kami Band, then live at Budokan 2014 it is.
      czcams.com/video/ESzY9dL613Q/video.html
      - Onedari Daisakusen, live at Legend 1997, this is a Black Babymetal song, is a subgroup with only YuiMetal and MoaMetal.
      czcams.com/video/1dT1ywYR5So/video.html
      - Iine! again official MV hits way better but if you want live, here live at Budokan 2014.
      czcams.com/video/5sCvYVNeD0w/video.html
      - Karate live at Download Festival 2016, "kitsune6001" got this with a short interview intro.
      czcams.com/video/FKOL6v3Md2c/video.html
      - Road Of Resistance live in Japan official, this one is easily to find but be careful with the blocked by putting some filters just in case.
      - Kimi To Anime Ga Mitai - Answer For Animation With You, live at Budokan 2014, not sure if it's still safe, so try some filters, if is audio blocked try to mute or just cut the parts.
      czcams.com/video/M8FKumvh-w8/video.html
Here's a song you can find at Babymetal Reactor Resource (BMRR), a helpful place to get watermarked logo clips of the original live version to curve the annoying algo.
      - GJ! live at Wembley Arena 2016, another Black Babymetal song.

If you want an OMV try 'Karate'. For a LIVE video do either 'Road Of Resistance' LIVE or the LIVE compilation of 'Catch Me If You Can', especially the last one because it features solos from each of the Kami Band members before Mikio Fujioka death. BabyMetal. It is quite literally a Label Vehicle for SuMetal. And as of this date YuiMetal has left the band and been replaced. The other girls are now young women in their twenties. When they hit 30 what will they call it? MiddleAgedWomanMetal? Or just replace them outright? It may have run it's course but it's become so overblown now that they're going to tour with Metallica. They're no BAND-MAID.

Some vocal parts do indeed come from a backing track, like the stylized "flute playing". But it's pretty obvious, so I don't think it matters. The main vocals are live. Or at least, they are sung live during live shows, which this isn't, as it's a music video for the original studio track. I do understand that BABYMETAL is not for everyone, especially if you have an aversion against Metal and Japanese Pop culture. What I don't understand is why so many people get worked up about the girls not playing instruments. That's pretty normal for singers and dancers, isn't it? I would say that the vast majority of the best singers in the whole music industry don't play instruments.

The “WTF did I just watch” reaction is typical among first-time BABYMETAL viewers. A lot of their songs tend to get that reaction . . . even after watching and listening to a few! Be advised that you are reacting to the official music video so it's bound to get tweeked in post-production, but this is a real concert ("Legend 1997 Apocalypse") and the real version of this track is out there (see below). Furthermore, many of the One would not advise any first-timer to start with "Gimme Chocolate!!", but they would also advise the first-timer to take in two or three more BABYMETAL songs before making any judgement (the blind can't describe an elephant accurately by just feeling the trunk, right?). Anyway . . . .
BABYMETAL has been around for a bit over twelve years now (they started when their lead singer - known as Su-metal (Suzuka Nakamoto) - was about twelve, and the two "cheerleaders" (or the “Greek chorus” as I like to call them - officially "scream and dance" (backing vocals)) - Moametal (Moa Kikuchi) and Yuimetal (Yui Mizuno) - were both around eleven. Unfortunately, Yui left the band in 2018, and only earlier this year Momometal (Momoko Okazaki) was named a member of the group. They do not play instruments but are backed by the Kami Band (but not in this video) - session musicians who are among the best that Japan (and the U.S.) has to offer. By the way: why is it so important for the girls to be playing instruments? Are they not allowed to be just singers and dancers? Is there some kind of weird rule in music that I somehow missed that prohibits this? Anyway . . . .
BABYMETAL started a brand new genre of music ("kawaii metal" - cute metal), and they cannot be pigeon-holed - they are almost always thinking and moving outside box; they made listening to metal FUN! They have, to date, four studio albums, and have been on a number of world tours. It is common knowledge among their devoted fans (known as "The One") that BABYMETAL is best served live, but they do have several music videos that are real works of art. If you have a notion to check out more BABYMETAL, I suggest you go back to the beginning, and react to their first two music videos, "Doki Doki Morning" and "Iine!" (pronounced "E-nay"), both released in 2012. Here's a list of my favorites with suggested versions found here on CZcams:
Doki Doki Morning (official music video)
    Iine! (official MV)
Gimme Chocolate!! (official MV or Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
    Megitsune (official MV)
BABYMETAL Death (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Onedari Daisakusen (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Song 4 No Uta (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Uki Uki * Midnight (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Catch Me If You Can (Budokan Black Night 2014 version)
Ijime, Dame, Zettai (Live at Sonisphere 2014 version)
    Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!! (Legend 1997 Apocalypse version)
Road of Resistance (Legend 2015 New Year Fox Festival version)
    Karate (official MV)
Meta Taro (Five Fox Festival version)
    GJ! (Fox Festival 2017 version)
Sis Anger (Fox Festival 2017 version)
    Shanti Shanti Shanti (official MV)
    Pa Pa Ya!! (official MV)
    BxMxC (official MV)
    Metalizm (official MV)
    Metali!! (official MV)
I would include the links but, for some reason, CZcams sometimes thinks I'm posting spam and will delete my comment. For the links, see the CZcams playlist “BABYMETAL Top Twenty”; it is a mix of MV’s and live performances, is more or less in historical sequence, and could be considered a road map down the BABYMETAL foxhole. If nothing else, it can be used as a reference to find high quality versions of BABYMETAL songs without mucking about - if they are on the list.
Finally, I should point out that BABYMETAL is not anime - never has been and, with any luck, never will be. Evidently, many people jump to anime simply because they are singing in Japanese, and anime is the only place they’ve ever heard Japanese singing. Would they still sound like anime if they were singing in French or German or Swedish or English? An observation made by someone on Reddit: "A lot of Japanese people who listen to BABYMETAL never talk about anime (because there is nothing anime in BABYMETAL) and often wonder what's with those stupid anime comments from the West." Anyway . . . .
    Sorry about the wall!
Enjoy your trip down the foxhole! (You're in for a wild ride!!!)

Babymetal were the first act to be pushed onto Western audiences in festivals. The three girls were very young and the band behind them are the musicians that provide the metal. However they have all grown older. Su is still the main singer and they are trying to adapt and change and have recently had a change in lineup. I call them them the gateway drug. Without them on YT I guess some of us would not have looked into Japanese music and discovered the wonderful variety. They are an act in front of a band but are more than that. They are probably one of the biggest and well known acts/bands to come out of Japan. Best just to enjoy the madness and accept it.

This music video is from their "Legend 1997 SU-METAL Seitansai" that means "Live 1997 SU-METAL Holy Birthday" cause yeah, it was the lead singer's 16th Birthday 🎂 😅.
This was a milestone as SU just finished being part of Sakura Gakuin and BABYMETAL just became a fully independent act (though they've been performing their own shows since 2012).
This show was massive at the time, they've played in smaller venues up to that date, but just in a few years, they went from hundreds to thousands.
The audio is not from the live performance, it's just the studio track.
That show was meant to celebrate BABYMETAL evolution, so it began with a lipsync dubstep version of one of their songs, went on with them singing live over a backtrack with a fake band on stage, called the Babybones, finally the last part has real musicians, the Kami Band and a really intense scene, quite shocking at the time, to celebrate their passage from the idol world to the metal one 😊.
They are among the best performing acts in the world, really, though of course their best shows are those in Japan, as they went big abroad only a couple times, Wembley 2016, LA Forum 2019.
So yes, if you're going to dig deeper in the Foxhole, always look for the live versions first.

You've had a common "WTF" reaction to this song which is one of the group's earlier and most pop ones. I think you also have to adjust to the Japanese "idol" tradition which has performers singing and dancing often to a pre-recorder track...think Bananarama ;-). But in later performances BM have a world class live backing band called The Kami Band and they are fantastic.
The three girls are very good professional performers and the lead singer, Suzuka Nakamoto, has a fantastic voice. I recommend you listen to a few more songs with the Kami Band also performing. BABYMETAL have been joined on stage for this song by members of Korn, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and DragonForce.
Not all at the same time of course. : )
This whole concept of combining JPop/Idol music with metal could have been a disaster, but the quality of the singing, songwriting, choreography and staging take it to another level.
'Gimme Chocolate!!' is definitely one of their "poppier" tracks.
Even so, that blast beat gets you. And the whole thing is about 10x heavier live.
This is the studio track over the live 'LEGEND 1997' concert footage which celebrated the lead singer's 16th birthday.
That was actually the world premiere of this song. Of course the choreography, etc. is already dialed in.
Su's vocals at the live concert sounded great, they could have used that for the video.
This show started off with the "Baby Bones" guys in skeleton suits pretending to play instruments, including this song, but the live Kami Band finished the show with a five song encore.

That was a great first reaction to the video that went viral and put them on the international map. The point of Babymetal is something you would have never seen nor heard of before, or even since their formation 13 years ago. They created a new genre of metal called kawaii metal (cute metal) that is a fusion of jpop and metal. Just fyi, I believe Bandmaid and Lovebites were inspired by Babymetal. I suggest you continue this Babymetal path and you will understand what they are doing. I recommend Headbanger, Megitsune, Karate, and Road of Resistance in Japan. Babymetal is a live performance band, so their live shows are much better than the studio recordings. They have over 50 songs in their discography, and every song is different. It shows the versatility of the lead singer. You won't find that in many artists' discographies.
At the time of this video, I believe the lead singer was about 14 or 15. The other two were 12 or 13. The girls are in their mid twenties now. You mentioned the harmonies, yes, the lead singer, Su-metal, is singing against her own pre recorded harmonies on a track during a live performance.
We hope you react more to Babymetal. They are probable among the very best performance acts on the planet. Every fan who has gone to one of their concerts go home tired, but still charged from the experience that lingers in them for days after.

Good first reaction and welcome to the BABYMETAL Foxhole.🦊 It is just unfortunate you got the official video for 'Gimme Chocolate' for your first experience, that can go badly wrong for a lot of people and it can give entirely the wrong impression. They were not miming, this has the studio audio dubbed over the live performance (their live audio is always better and the lead singer in particular is an incredibly talented and versatile vocalist - and the other two have headset mic's and they also sing live despite all the dancing).
Also they started off very low budget and couldn't afford a live band early on ... this was filmed at the last "big" show they did where the live band came on only for the encores (you were right, the guys in skeleton suits - Babybones - were not playing their instruments, they were just there for show - no pretence, everybody knew what they were). The live band played the last 5 songs - this was not one of them.
There was another option you hadn't considered - you have found one of the very best live acts on the planet right now and it is likely none of the Japanese bands you named would have been heard of outside of Japan had it not been for BABYMETAL breaking out 10 years ago and showing the world just what might be happening in Japan.
I don't watch anime either, never have - they are not anime related. I saw them in London on Monday, they played there again on Tuesday (I couldn't go or I'd have been there again) and Wolverhampton yesterday - they are getting towards the end of their latest European tour and they are selling out everywhere they play.
Oh yes the name BABYMETAL may seem silly, but it is a play on words. It is not about their age (although when they started in 2010 they were aged 12 and 11 so it probably did play a part too). The name was chosen for two reasons:
    - to symbolise that they gave birth to a new genre of metal music (kawaii metal)
    - because the writing (and pronunciation) in Japanese is nearly identical to the writing of "heavy metal" (and they love a pun):
    BABYMETAL = ベビーメタル (be-bi-me-ta-ru)
    heavy metal = ヘビーメタル (he-bi-me-ta-ru)
BABYMETAL are like nothing you will have seen or heard before, they don't limit themselves to any one main style or genre and you won't be able to pigeonhole or put them in any one box like you can with virtually every other band in the world, they are one of a kind and they invented their own genre and style that nobody has been able to copy successfully (some have tried, none came close) including bringing choreographed dancing to metal (but not as you might know it from pop acts where it is nearly always used just to fill the stage or give you almost naked girls (and boys) to look at to take your mind off often bland music).
BABYMETAL's choreo helps with interpreting the song - a lyric or the meaning etc, but it is designed to involve and lead the crowd, to give them their cues when to jump, shout, pump their fists, chant and so on. BABYMETAL are complete masters of crowd control and crowd involvement.
They are supported in live shows by the Kami Band - some of Japan's very best session musicians, each one of them a world class instrumentalist. They were phased in gradually from October 2012. BABYMETAL had started in 2010 with little or no budget so they sang to a backing track at the start and when they started doing their own small shows guys in skeleton suits who you saw in this video (known as Babybones) would pretend to play the instruments.
Kami means god or spirit, so in the BABYMETAL lore they are the gods of guitar, bass and drums summoned from the dead by the Fox God to support BABYMETAL - as such they originally wore the traditional white burial robes and corpse face paint. At the end of 2017 the robes were changed for black robes and since 2019 the face paint was replaced with masks (nearly everybody wants the face paint back, or for them to just get rid of the masks).
From their first appearance in October 2012 the Kami Band played at a couple of festivals and the encores in some shows and became the full time support for all live shows at the start of 2014 and have been with BABYMETAL ever since - but only for live shows, they do not record the studio versions.
In 2019 the Kami Band of the West (American musicians) were introduced and they have been supporting BABYMETAL on their more extended foreign tours since then.
In 2014 they started to tour outside of Asia and Japan for the first time coming to Europe and the US and since then they have won new fans all over the world and become internationally the most successful Japanese band ever and one of the very best live bands on the planet right now - their 3rd album released in 2019 was the first by any Asian group to reach number 1 in the US Billboard Hard Rock charts.
It is BABYMETAL's success abroad that has opened the doors for so many more Japanese bands internationally.
They have nearly 70 songs now, every one of them is different (and if you want something technically impressive try 'Tales of the Destinies'). They have songs in virtually every metal genre but will mix in other musical styles and genres with the metal, often when you least expect it. Some songs lean towards their pop roots others are just good hard metal and they do everything in between - so if you don't like one song no problem - try another, the chances are you'll love it.
The official videos with studio audio are all very good and worth seeing, but live (without the over-processed vocals of the studio and with the Kami Band's live instrumentals) is where BABYMETAL shine brightest and are at their very best .... maybe avoid the Glastonbury Festival videos - they put on a great show, but the BBC live stream those videos were taken from have terrible audio and camerawork and the crowd didn't know what they were seeing and hearing.
You have some good suggestions for more songs in the comments already, so go with any of those. I think 'Megitsune' is possibly the best intro to BABYMETAL, it shows a lot of what they are about, but you mentioned Tom Morello ... their most recent song 'Metali' is a collaboration featuring Tom Morello. It is another of their "fun" songs (Metali is a made up word mixing metal and matsuri - matsuri is a Japanese summer festival). SummerSonic has posted a good live performance video for this one.

So, to play 👹 advocate, BabyMetal have been around as long as BandMaid. They have 6x the YT subs and sell out arenas, BandMaid does not. So, there's obviously a market. You are (most likely happily) in the minority. However, they are much less prolific, with roughly half the output of BandMaid over 10 years. The band are stunningly good technicians, on par with anyone in Band-Maid (with the possible exception of MISA), Nemophila, or Love Bites. Su (lead singer, the tall one) is an extremely good mezzo soprano singer, in fact very similar to Miku's voice for clarity and pitch control, though she rarely gets into the alto range, if ever. In fact, Saki of Nemo is a huge fan, and they have covered one of their songs in a video. And they are extremely respected in the Japanese rock community ..for what they are. And what they are is what you said, is a performance act, a singing and dancing show with cute ladies with a spanking band in the back that is content to be faceless. As long as you go into BabyMetal with that expectation, you can judge BabyMetals results vs their expectations of themselves.

But have a look at their site and try something with the real band, who are world class Metal musicians, like HEADBANGER live or one of the best Metal finales ever in a live show - BABYMETAL DEATH' live.

Every time I'm at work playing Band-Maid:
Customer - "Oh what is this?"
    Me - "Oh, they're Band-Maid, they're a Japanese hard rock girl band!"
Customer - "Oh like Babymetal? I love them! Saw them with Dethklok recently!"
Me - "... yea... like babymetal..."
In all honestly though, I think if Babymetal didn't take off like it did, Band-Maid would have dissolved before they ever found success. I'm not sure the main market for Babymetal is even weebs, I feel like they kinda went viral and it was former theater kids that attached to them, at least within my circles. I will say, I definitely wrote the band off as a gimmick, but Su-metal has proven to be a good singer.

Like you, if this had been the first Babymetal video I'd seen, I don't know if I'd have continued. Luckily. I watched Catch Me If You Can, followed by Headbanger, both live, and I was hooked. Babymetal are amazing live, and every song is different. Try BMC for rap, Road of Resistance for powermetal, Yava for ska, Shanti Shanti Shanti for Bollywood metal... they cover a lot of ground, and do it very well. The songwriters they have are amazing.
I don't know why this video has the studio version, the actual live track is much better. I'd suggest watching another song or two, they are worth the effort 😎

Yeah this band is 100% the product of Japanese Idol culture for better or for worse. They're all killer performers (singers and dancers included) who want to make their living by performing art for people and have been sucked into a corporate machine and spat out into a product that has been designed to sell. Pretty much every culture on earth has a version of this, this is just the Japanese flavor. It understandably gives the whole thing a much more manufactured feel than the other artists you mentioned. Some people are bothered by it, some people are bothered that some people are bothered by it... it's very "welcome to the Internet" in that way. And the thing is, if you like it, any perceived artificiality probably isn't gonna matter much. And if you don't, then any professed legitimacy isn't gonna matter much.
Philosophical wankery aside, they do have some legitimately good tunes that I'd recommend to anyone into heavy music. Megitsune, Karate, or Mirror Mirror are all very worthwhile.

Yeah. This is one of the most requested of reactions for Babymetal, because it went viral and is a staple fan favourite for live shows, but is IMHO probably the worst introduction to the group for the reasons you picked up on. This is the studio track over a 'live' performance (the girls did sing live over a backing track but the 'band' were miming for the first half of the set). The second half of the show, with a real band (the Kami band) backing up the girls, is incredible. Unfortunately you won't find anything from this show ("Legend 1997" - referring to Su, the lead vocalists' year of birth, performed the day after her 16th birthday) on the official channel, however I would recommend 'Catch Me If You Can', 'Akatsuki (unfinished ver.)' or 'Babymetal Death' from this show if you can find them.
I think this is the track I first heard back in 2014, and my reaction as a fan of other Japanese music back then was even more dismissive - just young girls miming to J-pop vocals over tracks for a -ahem- certain audience. Then during lockdown they kept popping up in my feed with reactions so I thought what the hell and gave them another chance and how I fell into the foxhole 😀
Su, the lead vocalist has a fantastic voice and the musicians backing them up are top tier. Their shows are always entertaining and they give 100%. I got back today after seeing them in London and Wolverhampton and had a great time.
Some other tracks I would recommend would be (in order of performance):-
Rondo of Nightmare (w/ Mischiefs of Metal Gods Intro) | LIVE at Budokan Black Night - Just Su and the Kami band
Ijime,Dame,Zettai - Live at Sonisphere 2014,UK (OFFICIAL) - imagine the girls on the main stage at Knebworth in front of 50,000+ UK metal fans who are not known for taking cr*p
Road of Resistance - Live in Japan (OFFICIAL) - this was co-written with Herman Li and Sam Totman of Dragonforce
    Karate Live Download Festival 2016
'Tales of the Destinies' and 'The One' from Tokyo Dome Live 2016 - best heard together
Monochrome - Piano ver. / THE FIRST TAKE
"Divine Attack" or "Maya" from Live Blu-ray/DVD「BABYMETAL BEGINS - THE OTHER ONE -」
    Hmmm....Lotsa live stuff there 🙂
I'm sure others will descend and fill you in with lore and such (and oh boy, is there a lot of lore :-) ), 'The One' usually do...

Mate this is the studio version over the footage from legends 97 concert and is probably the worst song to begin your babymetal journey as this is a theatrical performance which they are singing to a backing track and the band are fake because in their early days they could not afford a band until the legendary Kami band (some of the top session musicians in Japan)joined them who they introduce later in this concert as this whole concert is about them turning from a j pop band into a metal band and i bet you could not do that at the ages of 16 and 14.

Gimme chocolate is generally the worst start for someone having any kind of standards on quality music. Us Babymetal fans finds it fun. But hardly worth listening to, really. It was a door opener though as it is poppy and metal at the same time and it is very surprising. Their first song - doki doki morning is actually better. The Music Movie is very good, and even more surprising than Gimme Chocolate. But, I think you shall wait. It is not high quality metal either. But it is definitely cute as they are 13 and 11. And the two 11 year dancers are unusually small. Neither of them are above 1.50 (5 feet) as grown ups.
In the early days it was those three girls and the musicians were anonymous, wearing skeleton masks. The focus was not on music, really. It was on the shock factor. Cute girls and hard metal.
Later they decided to have a more official backing band, the Kami band. And the players got some place. And were totally fantastic. The songs also got more complicated and in some songs the players had solos, usually before the girls enter. Generally, live performances are to prefer, there are some exceptions.
Note that the small girls, as expected, did grow up and are now grown up. One is replaced. The original were Su (lead) and Moa and Yui (dance and shout, as they say). You left 2018 and is now replaced 2023 with Momoka. I like to think they have four eras.
    * The small and cute era: This is their golden days, when the best music is made IMHO. And the best videos.
    * The growing up era: After Yui left they was not as productive. They made some good songs, like BxMxC and Pa Pa Ya.
    * The Metalverse era: experimenting with other stuff. Some like it, I do not. Not really any concerts. It collided with Covid.
    * Now: this one is only based on one song, Metali. It is a banger. With Tom Morello. It is really good. Maybe a bit simplistic musically, if you have demands on advanced music.
So, here is a list of my favorite songs, sorted by Music Video or Live, which I find the best
    LIVE
    * Babymetal Death (this one needs some context before looking at. It is weird if you do not have it. It is also heavy.)
    * Catch me if you can (Fun and kind of hard)
    * GJ (Black Babymetal)
    * Headbanger (This one is a must)
    * Pa Pa Ya (Party!)
    * Road of resistance (Crowd interaction. Advanced pop.)
    * Rondo of nightmares (Solos intro).
    * Sis Anger (Black Babymetal. Very heavy. They tell the audience that they hate them. And the audience loves it! Must see!)
    * The one (I would say - only for fans. It is slow and beautiful. But not interesting. The one is the name of Babymetal plus their fans, that ore one.)
    * Yava (My favorite. The text is weird. The music and song is fantastic.)
    MV
    * BxMxC (different, Su is rapping)
    * Doki doki mornin (The original)
    * Iine (Their weirdest song. You might like it. It is five or so genres at the same time. An early experiment. Most people are just reacting with - why? But I think it is interesting. Apropos BAND-MAID just throwing lots of different stuff at the walls.)
    * Karate (Nice coreography and visuals)
    * Megitsune (This one is a must)
    * Metali (Their latest one. Good!)
    * Shanti shanti (Bollywood)
    * Tales of destinies (Prog. Very prog. If you like prog, this is a must!) Or - is this live?

It is a shame that because of the number of views so many new reactors first experience with these young ladies is Gimme Chocolate. They are so much more than this.
BabyMetal began in 2010 there were Suzuka Nakamoto age 12 Moa Kikuchi and Yui Mizuno. Both Moa and Yui were 11 years old All three girls were friends and classmates who attended an idol group (Sakura Gakuin) founded in 2010 by Amuse Talent Agency for girls 10 to 15. Themed around school life (they attended regular school as well) the girls would learn and train at vocals, dancing, public speaking and etiquette, etc., graduate at age 15 and then move onto whatever entertainment path they chose or that suited their talents.
Key Kobayashi was a music producer for Amuse and heard Suzuka sing at age 9 and was impressed with her strong vocals and stage presence. Kobayashi was a fan of heavy metal but believed that the genre had become stale and tired (especially in Japan) with metal bands getting old Kobayashi believed the genre needed to be reborn (BabyMetal means the birth of a new metal genre). Kobayashi felt that Suzuka had the ability to front a metal band and that her vocals and presence could withstand the metal guitars and drums. The fusion of Jpop and Metal began. He placed Moa and Yui as backup singers/dancers and a phenomenon was about to result.
At first Amuse showed no interest and the girls had only financing from Kobayashi. They performed at strip malls and small venues using clothes borrowed from friends and family. No money for a real band they had friends dressed in homemade skeleton costumes pretending to play instruments to a backtrack. They became a sensation (these young ladies paid their dues). Amuse saw the potential and in 2012 hired the best session musicians Japan had to offer (The Kami Band) who tours with them today (now includes world class musicians from the USA for tours outside of Asia).
If you choose to explore more of BabyMetal I suggest reacting to LIVE performance videos as this is where they shine.

Yui Mizuno left BabyMetal in 2018 due to health reasons and at their concert in Yokohama on April 1 it was announced that a permanent third member Momoko Okazaki (who is also a graduate of Sakura Gakuin and has been appearing with them LIVE since 2019 after Yui's departure) has officially become the third member.
Their new album in my opinion that released March 24 is amazing with so many different styles.
Good luck and hope to see you again.

You keep saying that, but I've never seen a source from any interview, etc. that supports that statement about financing.
Koba has been an Amuse, Inc. employee since 1996.
He did present a business plan for the group to Amuse once BABYMETAL started to get some attention.

Invoking band maid and calling BABYMETAL's costumes silly is.... [complete here the sentence]. But okay, I'm very happy today and I'm going to pass that and also the anime thing.
About not singing: are you familiar with what a music video is? This is a music video, with the studio track over the visuals from a concert. They do sing live actually. If the word "live" is not in the tittle of an official video, it has the studio version of the audio.
Next: they don't play any instrument. Voice is an instrument. They also dance... wanna try? 😁 They have a backing band for live performances called Kami Band. Unfortunately not in this music video because it was 2013 and they couldn't afford a real band at first. In that particular concert the Kami Band appeared for the five songs encore. The guys in skeleton costumes are actors and were replaced for good a few months after this performance took place (early March 2014).
At that time (December 2013) Su-metal had turned 16 the previous day (literally) while Yuimetal and Moametal were both 14. Their outfits are perfectly fine and always respectful. I can't say the same about other bands... Now, 10 years later they are all grown up.
"Gimme Chocolate" is a fun song about the girls wanting to eat chocolate but being a little worried about their weight. And it's still so freaking metal. Generic? Define "generic". It's some sort of industrial metal. Okay it's not like I'm going crazy but the point of the song is the extreme juxtaposition of the vocals and the instrumentals.
They are very diverse musically as they don't hesitate on mixing any music genre with any metal sub-genre. So always expect the unexpected if you want to continue your journey. And I know you want because they got your attention. I dare you to dive into the Fox Hole. 😜
    Until next time!

@@markabusireactions I see. The thing is that they put a lot of effort on their big format concert's stage setup. This one, with the giant statue it's almost nothing compared to what they have done later. So, they tend to amortize the stage setups doing this kind of music videos. Not to mention that the choreo is an integral part of what they do.
Let me suggest you to check out any of their newer live or music videos (ideally the live ones). You will notice a huge difference. 😁

Gimme Choko is always kind of a double edged sword for a first reaction. While it's their most famous song and the breakout hit that made them famous around the world, it's far from their best song or even a good example of what they are capable of. This was from ten years ago when they were 16 and 14 years old, and their have refined their craft a lot since then. Some other songs you might care to check out that are more representative of them would be Karate live at Download 2016, Ijime Dame Zettai live at Sonisphere 2014, Road of Resistance live in Japan, Karate Live at Budokan 2021. Babymetal are famous for their live stage performances, so it's best to what their live sets whenever possible.

    Welcome to the Foxhole! 🤘🦊🤘
The WTF? reaction is normal and as many have said, two or three more songs are nirmal before it clicks.
Having the second largest comsumer base on the world for music, Japanese labels generally don't look to promote or tour groups outside of Japan. The labels also tended to not promote anything that wasnt Pop or Rap. BABYMETAL shattered that wall of isolationism carving out a path for other bands like Band-Maid, Nemophila, Hanabie and so on to gain international success. The other bands all recognize this as well.
All that said, I personally do not call BABYMETAL a band. They are a song and dance performance unit that is backed by a (damned good) band during live shows.
As others have mentioned, they cannot be pigeon-holed. Every song is unique and different and if you want to see how many genres they can cram into one song, check out "iine!".

    Your honest opinion is appreciated.
I have always thought that gimme chocolate is the worst song to start the babymetal journey, it is their most viral song but only because of the wtf factor and the memes.
Also the girls don't play instruments, they are very talented (they sing and do choreography) but they don't play instruments, if you expect to see very talented musicians in fact you will see them (kami band), but don't expect the girls to play instruments because that's not what babymetal is about.
Looking on the bright side, after reacting to gimme chocolate, you can react to any babymetal song and you will surely like it more, I also recommend that you react to live versions, live babymetal is best babymetal

I get that idol stuff is common in Japanese culture, and I really like that they have that weird (for us westerners') side. I travelled there, and seeing them get hyped and almost mosh while four girls are singing a kawaii song is a mind-boggling and bizarre experience. But I don't understand their (and Korean for that matter) standards for dancing. I mean, they have groups like Avantgardey that do great choreographies, but none of the Babymetal videos I've seen depict any intricate or particularly skillful dances.
Regarding the singing, the lead singer's voice is fine, but nothing out of the ordinary and kinda same-y throughout. And the chorus is... there.
Then you have the metal band that from what I've seen has good musicians but tends to be relegated to the background.
So, for me there are kinda two things happening at the same time but not necessarily blending together into a cohesive show. And one of them, the one we are meant to be seeing and paying the most attention to, is particularly lacking in proficiency.
I'm glad and thankful that they open the doors of Japanese metal or rock to more audiences, though.

Don't know your background in dancing (I certainly have none so I'm definitely not an expert) but BABYMETALs choreographer Mikiko Mizuno was selected as the choreographer for the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony in 2020. Unfortunately the olympic games got delayed because of COVID and she couldn't take that role in 2021 because of other commitments. But still I have hard time believing that person who get's picked for such a huge event has not made any "intricate or particularly skillful" dances for babymetal. But as I said I'm not a dancer so I could be completely wrong. Also if you want to hear the lead singer Su-metal really show her skills I would suggest you check out Monochrome -piano version from a FIRST TAKE channel. If you have not already seen it. I'll leave a link to it. czcams.com/video/h-hPGRSjgms/video.html

    • @ASR1nc
      @ASR1nc Před 8 měsíci +3

Thanks for the link. Yes, she's a good singer. For me, her type of voice doesn't pair well with this genre of music and I would argue that the version you linked is better than the original. The same happens with Miku from Band-Maid, though in that case they brought in another singer because of that.
I don't know the choreographer's background and I'm not saying that she isn't capable of creating intricate choreographies. I just didn't see the girls from Babymetal doing anything noteworthy. But it happens with a lot of idol groups. I think it may have something to do with the fans being able to learn the movements and dance along. You can watch any idol group big or small and the otakus will always be there mimicking their dances.

    • @markabusireactions
      @markabusireactions  Před 8 měsíci +2

@@ASR1nc that is a solid point tbf. It might be that the dances aren’t particularly intricate specifically so even beginners can at least try and pick it up. The more complicated you make it the more you alienate a potential audience.
Also, gonna disagree about Miku. She has a banging voice, that I kinda prefer over Saiki 😂

Please do pick another song. This is over ten years old and went viral even though it's a studio soundtrack dubbed over a live performance with miming musicians dressed as skeletons behind them. Because it has the most views people tend to look at this first and that's a bit of a mistake. To see them live properly with excellent musicians behind them at about the same time try Road of Resistance live from Japan. They're still going strong, albeit now in their twenties. I saw them in London on Monday. There's some great recent material.

Thrust into it at 11 and 12 and 13 years later still having their songs written, composed, and even played for them. Hell the dances are choreographed for them as well. If it was 3 guys dancing in front of a backing band I wonder how many of these 50 year old "metalheads" would be headbanging to songs about wanting chocolate, being excited to go to school or begging for money from there dad.

@@markabusireactions There is a bit of old, bad, blood between the communities.Baby Metal is the break-out act internationally. But then Band-Maid is not some kind of spin-off of Baby Metal. If anything Band-Maid comes with DNA otoh from Harajuku "kawaii-culture", best exponent of which is Kyari Pamyu-pamyu, otoh from the development of the "alternative idol" scene beginning with BIS (Brand-new Idol Society).
What is going on is a cultural shift in Japanese music and society is a breaking up and widening of some pretty heavy-handed traditional views of what. "appropriate" female behaviour in public is. And without being strident or in your face about it, both Baby Metal and. Band-Maid might be thought of as doing this by extending what has often been quite limited forms of expression.
Kanami once sent Kobato a new song in need of lyrics with the one-line instruction: "Rock is freedom." And if one asks oneself why rock'n'roll might struggle to capture the mainstream, while Japanese women seem so keen to embrace it, then one answer might be to ask who is in need of the liberating qualities of rock these days?
