I don't think it is that far. Remember this is the worst it will ever be.
Its not anywhere near sentience. AI programmers are still just trying to cheat the Turing test instead of actually passing it, or better yet realizing that its a terrible measure of intelligence to begin with. modern AI is not intelligent at all and not artificial. It has to be trained by people with human input directing its learning, and it has absolutely no understanding of what its doing. Its just a poor mans imitation of our brains associative system, containing many thousands of layers of statistical associations and nothing else. It has no conceptual understanding at all. It has none of the complex mental modules of information processing that a truly thinking brain has to enable thought and understanding. If programmers continue in this fashion AI will hit a wall of progress, and keep churning out mentally vacant horribly unintelligent statistical zombies like they are now.

Its just a recursive set of many thousands of layers of weighted statistical associations. mindless without any conceptual understanding and requiring human input and training. Its a poor man's rip off of our brains associative system, and not a very good one at that, written by programmers still trying to cheat the turning test rather than actually pass it, or better yet actually aspiring to the goal turning was trying, but failed, to set a test to measure.
