  • The British Army is becoming streamlined, as units have begun to receive the new Virtus body armour system. It is lighter, slimmer and more manoeuvrable than older models and 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES) are some of the first soldiers to receive it. Troops can balance the weight of their kit better, and only use the parts relevant to their role.

      Comfortable in the military means it chafes where it's tolerable to chafe, and only chafes where it ain't so when it's sodden. I'll take wet boots and thick socks over being barefoot in a mire any day. Bit of discomfort never did anybody any harm... well, except for those it did.

    bit late but anyway... I see alot of people concerned that the Virtus helmet is basically the same as the Amrican ACH/ECH when in fact it's very different, the liner is alot better with a dual system consisting of both shock/zap style pads and a suspension system that is adjustable via a dial on the rear. The virtus helmet is also alot lighter than both the ECH and ACH as well as the shape actually being taken from the canadian CG634 helmets rather than the US issue. not to mention the helmet is far more versatile then either of the US issues helmets and canadian.

I like the release design and the pouches look interesting, there aren't many flat closed top pouches out there. That's what kills me about the whole bull pup movement. It sacrifices ergonomics, reload speed, a decent trigger, forward grip options, and left handed shooter usability for a 4 inch decrease in overall length. The M16 did the same when the M4 was developed and all that changed ballisticly is the bullet is around 110 FPS slower.

    • @BringerOfD
      @BringerOfD Před 7 lety +10

      Blast proof boots and kevlar pants won't save your legs if you step on an IED first of all. it might protect you from shrapnel if buddy down the street hits one though. Plenty of guys have died in armored vehicles just from the over pressure of the blast. Second, can you imagine how much those boots would slow you down and how you'd cook under the sun in those pants?
      Mobility, Protection, and Firepower. That is the scale that needs to be balanced. They don't issue kevlar pants not because they don't care, but because chances are they'd get us killed more quickly.

    • @seemopps
      @seemopps Před 2 lety

      yes but if you really think about it, most armour wont stop the bullets that will be coming at them when fighting, british troops will be going against 7.62 most of the time which is a very powerful bullet and would most likely go through the armour anyway, at this point body armour is more of a storage thing rather than protection because if it focused on protection it would be too heavy to be able to be mobile

      Ballistic plates
      The level of protection employed can be scaled up or
      down to match the type of threat by adding or removing soft armour pads
      and hard ballistic plates.
      Lt Col Rob O’Connor (Yorks), commanding officer of the
      Infantry Trials and Development Unit, explained: “Commanders can select a
      level of armour using a combination that they think is sufficient for
      the situation. This allows them to scale back the amount of protection
      in favour of agility if they want.”
      As well as protection, the new body armour is designed
      to aid load-carriage, with even distribution of weight and reduced
      bulkiness. Troops operating in Afghanistan were carrying average loads
      that reached around 56 kilograms.
      Virtus is 4.7 kilograms lighter than Osprey and will
      become lighter still once new armour plates, which are in development,
      are introduced.

      Having used it myself, I can tell you that even H&K can't polish a turd. It's rear heavy, heavy overall for what it is, a pain in the neck to keep clean, the SUSAT is useless and unnecessarily heavy and the weapon still jams on a regular basis especially with the P mags which have actually turned out to be pretty dodgy. Anyone who latches onto the tag line that the army love to push about it being one of the best rifles in the world needs to actually do some work with one and then, like the rest of us, will be itching for something better. As for as good a weapon system as we're going to get, the SAS have been using M16s for yonks, the marines are currently trying out the C8 and the sharpshooter L129A1 has been in service since 2010. The AR15 platform weapons are all significantly better than the SA80 and it's the direction we're heading in anyway by the looks of things so there are better weapons out there! Compared to the A1 it's easy to believe this best weapon in the world line but it's not. It's just not.

      +Stelf101 It is an American helmet - The Revision Batskin Cobra.
      The question is, whether these will be made in America, or made under license by NP Aerospace (the company that made the previous combat helmets).

      +Tremulousnut I have done research on it and it is based on the Mark 7 helmet. I'm sure it's a shared designed with the Americans. but who cares who makes it or who designed it. as long as it does the job is supposed to do and gives better protection for our British soldiers.

    • @Tremulousnut
      @Tremulousnut Před 8 lety

      +Britishcomedy channel
      It's not "based on" the MK 7 in the sense that the helmet was designed with the MK 7 in mind - The MOD was looking for a helmet with the same principles as the MK7 (being able to shoot from a variety of positions without obstruction of view), and the Cobra Batlskin happened to fit that category. Why was it chosen? We may never know, there's many bean-counter reasons that are never revealed until a few years after it's issued to everyone.
      The Batlskin Cobra Plus is a repackaged version of their existing Cobra line of helmets for the British contract as you can tell with the "Plus" designation. Just correcting you that it's an American helmet.

    what about AGAINST HE shells?
    SO why not test it DIRECTLY against HE gun cannons of WWII or such?
    So what if it was a VERY BIG bored HE gun cannon - so suppose:
    1.) 75 mm HE shells from the Sherman Tank or the Panzer IV or Panther Tank?
    2.) 88 mm HE shells from the Tiger I Tank or 88mm HE from the Tiger Ausf B?
    2.) 105 mm M101 / M102 HE shells?
    3.) 122 mm Soviet gun cannons?
    4.) 152 mm gun cannons?
    5.) 155 mm gun cannons?
    6.) 130 mm gun canons?
    7.) Or even 175 mm gun cannons or bigger gun canons? So like the 203 mm Howitzers? Or 300 mm HE siege guns?
    so if this armor suit got a DIRECT PUNCH from any of these shells OR if it runs a gauntlet test of ONE shot how would it fare?

      "The helmet can be fitted with both mandible guard and visor, or either, which provide face protection for crews in open vehicles such as Jackal or WMIK."
      www.army.mod.uk/equipment/23216.aspx
      You get a clue, Infantry need mobility, a large face mask can also stop a rifleman from using his weapon very well, with the face mask stopping him positioning his head to look through his scope, this is especially bad for marksmen.
      I seriously get the feeling you don't know anything about body Armour and headgear.
      The current MK 7 headgear is only designed to stop up to a .45, helmets are mostly used to stop shrapnel.
      No helmet in the world is designed to stop a rifle round.
      If they made them, it would be too heavy and when it stopped the round the persons head would be thrown back, breaking the users neck.
      Don't talk about thing you haven't got a clue about
