British Soldiers Test New Lighter Body Armour | Forces TV

- The British Army is becoming streamlined, as units have begun to receive the new Virtus body armour system. It is lighter, slimmer and more manoeuvrable than older models and 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES) are some of the first soldiers to receive it. Troops can balance the weight of their kit better, and only use the parts relevant to their role.

It's not the Stig, but the Stig's army cousin.
hahaha brilliant
Best thing i've seen all day
^^
All we know is, he's called the StuG (III)
You've just killed me.
You know when the military calls it comfortable, it's not comfortable.
Comfortable in the military means it chafes where it's tolerable to chafe, and only chafes where it ain't so when it's sodden. I'll take wet boots and thick socks over being barefoot in a mire any day. Bit of discomfort never did anybody any harm... well, except for those it did.
The new virtus is decent. I know I’m 4 years late to the comment but the new body armour and helmet is great
@@MG-ot1ir clearly have never worn it for extended periods of time in 45 degrees. Virtus as a system is an embarrassment. But too much money has been spent to drop it now
@@weeman9869 i’ve worn it in cyprus on live fire exercise in the heat and personally i like it. few blokes i know who were on op pitting got some bad heat rashes from the STV
They deserve the best kit possible.
@@gawgaw6941 because they're fighting for you're freedom...
@@gawgaw6941 ok 'gaw gaw'
@@gawgaw6941 you triggered bruv?
@@gawgaw6941 it's not the soldiers decision to fight a war, therefore they should have the best kit they can, to stay safe as possible.
gaw gaw snowflake
Looks like a brilliant piece of kit. Just hope it lives up to the standards everyone's saying it is. Only one way to find out if it's good during combat, as osprey has already been battle tested and it's brilliant.
it was developed by troops who have seen combat.
+Samuel Braddow The same thing was said by the latest Osprey kit.
Sanders unlike ospery it was developed and tested by soldiers who have seen combat and the troops love it from what am hearing 3 rifles are wearing and they're saying its brilliant.
+Samuel Braddow I been told by paras it useless but they're really picky
Fight light and stay tight!!
+Pau laveti no bunching up! mortars love that shit bro!
thats what she said
What's with the massive cadilac face guard
+JayDee Its a modular face protection system, the new helmets used by the armed forces can be changed for different situations. This one I think is to protect a soldier during riots, but don't quote me on that :P
It's just generally for face protection and I like it.
+A Small Acorn I could have said there any better. and it's for the infantry
It's for increased protection against explosives and flying Derby.
+Suicidal MG no! its not for riots. US airmen wear them when using the MGs out of a helicopter.
Apparently, wearing this armour makes it difficult to rise from lain down position....
MuppetV23 yeah but osprey was a fair bit worse but rides up into your neck
I think that the main issue is that it gives very little protection in actual combat... look at the vulnerable kneeling and prone hit zones... This armour is like it was designed by a cuirassier in 1780 who was facing the enemy waving his sword about. I don't see how your bare shoulder can stop bullets and shrapnel going into your lungs.
Osprey MK4 one love!
bit late but anyway... I see alot of people concerned that the Virtus helmet is basically the same as the Amrican ACH/ECH when in fact it's very different, the liner is alot better with a dual system consisting of both shock/zap style pads and a suspension system that is adjustable via a dial on the rear. The virtus helmet is also alot lighter than both the ECH and ACH as well as the shape actually being taken from the canadian CG634 helmets rather than the US issue. not to mention the helmet is far more versatile then either of the US issues helmets and canadian.
Wish this gear was on the market
Now all you lot need is a decent rifle.
+Daithi N we'll probably get the c8 standard issue within the decade
***** Ugh I'm not a big fan of Diemaco's products, but its not a bad rifle.
The l85a2 is one of the most accurate rifle on the market and i think its a brilliant rifle and have u had experience with the rifle
+Charlie Munro yes. I'm going to join the RAMC, pass p coy, fight with 2 para in B company. You?
+Siveth oh so have you joined now and passed ?.
Yea motorcycle helmet already here!
Not being funny but that wood clearance at the end the Tom nearest to the camera were was your belt kit mucker. Where are your mags in your map pocket come on that's not good.
It just kinda looks like a plate carrier. Go look at the Crye Precision JPC or Combat Chassis.
very cool!
armour looks sweet
It'll be interesting to see what happens when some of this finds it's way to the US market. I like the release design and the pouches look interesting, there aren't many flat closed top pouches out there. I think the style of belt with gear that hangs low is pretty unique, but that may just be because of how tall the pouches are. We'll see here in a few months.
+sawyer lawrence That my friend is an age old british tradition, we call it "webbing", it only went out when osprey came in because it was cumbersome, however some infantry and para roles continued to use it
Osprey is covered in MOLLE, it has more than the new stuff, and it works well enough on it. The pouches turned out to be a copy of something GGG did though, which means I can get some now, no waiting for Virtus surplus.
yep, what we could do with now is a lighter bloody rifle
That's what kills me about the whole bull pup movement. It sacrifices ergonomics, reload speed, a decent trigger, forward grip options, and left handed shooter usability for a 4 inch decrease in overall length. The M16 did the same when the M4 was developed and all that changed ballisticly is the bullet is around 110 FPS slower.
The vertis helmet is pretty much the ECH
Question - Is it slim enough to wear under a smock
The combat smock is very useful with its large pockets and intermediate load carrying ability in addition to plce. It would benefit the soldier if they could wear their clothing as standard with non-obtrusive, under-smock body armour for greater flexibility, personal utility and comfort.
+koolyman haha know a cav man when I see one!
koolyman holy shit, that is a brilliant idea and I’m surprised it hasn’t been done
@@andrewobern4711 what's a smock
Will the visor and guard be used in riot situations
Where can I buy?
You’d have thought forces news would have known by now that Sgt in the Rifles is written with a J,
Sjt.
Its not the body armor thats the problem its the fact the army dont provide Kevlar trousers which are available and blast proof boots so our troops come back I one piece
delirious wolf they do wear kevlar under there trousers
the thing is the army don't care about you your just a piece of meat to them
delirious wolf thats funny cuz if they didmt care they wouldnt of provided ied resistant vehicles to tackle the ied problems in afghanistan and yes they do wear kevlar under neath there trousers but there kevlar shorts because the trousers are to bulky and to exspensive and there there is no bomb resistant boots i would like a link to ur bomb proof boots
Blast proof boots and kevlar pants won't save your legs if you step on an IED first of all. it might protect you from shrapnel if buddy down the street hits one though. Plenty of guys have died in armored vehicles just from the over pressure of the blast. Second, can you imagine how much those boots would slow you down and how you'd cook under the sun in those pants?
Mobility, Protection, and Firepower. That is the scale that needs to be balanced. They don't issue kevlar pants not because they don't care, but because chances are they'd get us killed more quickly.
Looks fucking wazzing
It looks like it provides less protection than the previous version?
They got rid of the parts that were barely hit and where they moved around the most
What about dragon armour?
I bet soldiers can't wait for something like graphene or carbon nanotube armor.
Technology for the new generation.
New British armour, called Skin™ practically weightless.
Does it disturb anyone else that barely any of the body is covered when in fighting poses?
Laying down = 0% coverage, kneeling 12% coverage.
I feel like a single small upper arm plate would triple kneeling protection and grant some laying protection.
yes but if you really think about it, most armour wont stop the bullets that will be coming at them when fighting, british troops will be going against 7.62 most of the time which is a very powerful bullet and would most likely go through the armour anyway, at this point body armour is more of a storage thing rather than protection because if it focused on protection it would be too heavy to be able to be mobile
The thumbnail looked like a Arma 3 screenshot lol
Training heavy one then change on duty it will make them fast
You mean "armor"?
I am sure this still isn’t standard issue. The army is still fazing out the old armour.
Old one was way too heavy and intolerably hot, needs to be breathable, but would breathable protect. I had a lot more respect for the bravery of soldiers when I tried the armour on (even though I am pacifist).
What about that DragonSkin we have over here??? Well, I guess it makes sense because in the UK they hook it up with body armor while the Skin costs nearly 10 grand or something insane like that (i'm exaggerating lol)
Dragonskin didn't work
Question, how do you put your cheek on your rifle when aiming if you've got the double wide face mask going on?
its only used for Vehicle crews in Jackals. Dismounted infantry don't use the face mask aha
Don't the Royal Danish Army also have this uniform?
1:32 Halo?
no
Arma 3 CTRG?
They're gonna make a FORTUNE on AIRSOFT WALTER MITTYS!!!!!
Two concerns, being lighter isn't always good. Does it offer the same level of protection? And the new helmet (Not the advanced one with the mouth and face guard) basically looks like the American helmet.
+Wanderer628
Ballistic plates
The level of protection employed can be scaled up or
down to match the type of threat by adding or removing soft armour pads
and hard ballistic plates.
Lt Col Rob O’Connor (Yorks), commanding officer of the
Infantry Trials and Development Unit, explained: “Commanders can select a
level of armour using a combination that they think is sufficient for
the situation. This allows them to scale back the amount of protection
in favour of agility if they want.”
As well as protection, the new body armour is designed
to aid load-carriage, with even distribution of weight and reduced
bulkiness. Troops operating in Afghanistan were carrying average loads
that reached around 56 kilograms.
Virtus is 4.7 kilograms lighter than Osprey and will
become lighter still once new armour plates, which are in development,
are introduced.
www.army.mod.uk/news/27112.aspx
+Wanderer628 Yeah.... I'm sure they lowered the level of protection in a "new" model....
What a fucking dumb question.
Dunning Kruger
It's not mate as the standard new armour provides less protection except for the helmet.
Might have better protection
+Dunning Kruger Frankly with how the government acts I wouldn't be surprised if they lied to get cheaper stuff.
Where is the iron man armor new rip
The British army finally adopting MOLLE plate carriers. Hopefully they might start to move some of that weight off their belts
They have had molle armour from 2007 and molle vest earlier than that
Will get even better when the new hard body armour gets stronger and lighter.
+carroj9 haha fuck it, ill carry the bergen, wolf can fight the battle!
those shirts under those jumpers looks SO uncomfortable
interesting.
can i pen this w/ kv-1?
Jamraptor well considering a KV-1 uses an 85mm Anti tank gun..... What do you think?
FistStomp _ 76mm last time I checked, what about a KV-2?
That soldier trying to explain the pros of the vest sounds like a total caveman
Please... please don't render my Camelbak useless with this new system.
0:40 the lad being interviewed is using his so yours should be fine mate
Only being issued to Infantry Units
+Peter Norgan haha ironic as it would making getting in and out of a capola a damn sight easier
Well... The RAF are getting new ties!
SGT Norgan no its issued across the whole armed forces
Hats
With 50 kgs of kit? In Afghanistan climate? It is already impressive that they can simply walk their patrol route with that weight, but how are they supposed to fight? I have no idea, but wouldn't it be better to leave some of the kit behind and go with less weight? What do soldiers say?
Ewalds Eiland never leave kit behind, the lads can carry it and would rather carry it everytime than find themselves in a situation where they need something they didn't bring. This was to make personal kit lighter and more comfortable
I think the new helmets are a lot better. Sure the old lot was amazing but it must have been pretty uncomfortable. Not only that, the new stuff looks way more epic.
+Ryan Jennings actually the mark 6a (latest afghan helmet) was incredibly comfortable and light, i would be amazed if they managed to improve it further
It has the same protection as the mk7 but Its lighter
Kane Brewer Wrong, mk7 was latest Afghan helmet. The Revision helmet is leaps and bounds better than the mk6a and mk7 in protection, mobility, and comfort.
Does it stop an AK round ?
Nope.
Nobody uses those rounds in Afganistan. Most common round is 7.62x39 and 7.62x54. Good luck stopping those rounds with this armour.
Jonny Bravo the soft armour no but it uses the same plates as the osprey
Now all we need is to grab a decent weapon system!
Daniel Wallis-Banbury Just use the GPMG or Minimi. That's what I'll be doing when I join 3PARA
Having used it myself, I can tell you that even H&K can't polish a turd. It's rear heavy, heavy overall for what it is, a pain in the neck to keep clean, the SUSAT is useless and unnecessarily heavy and the weapon still jams on a regular basis especially with the P mags which have actually turned out to be pretty dodgy. Anyone who latches onto the tag line that the army love to push about it being one of the best rifles in the world needs to actually do some work with one and then, like the rest of us, will be itching for something better. As for as good a weapon system as we're going to get, the SAS have been using M16s for yonks, the marines are currently trying out the C8 and the sharpshooter L129A1 has been in service since 2010. The AR15 platform weapons are all significantly better than the SA80 and it's the direction we're heading in anyway by the looks of things so there are better weapons out there! Compared to the A1 it's easy to believe this best weapon in the world line but it's not. It's just not.
Dragon amour
I think the helmet is way to big
that helmet does make any sense, it increases the opportunity to be headshot causing brain damage. (it is too big)
so thats not the mk7 helmet? We only just got the thing now they want a Americanised one is that it?
+Stelf101 It is an American helmet - The Revision Batskin Cobra.
The question is, whether these will be made in America, or made under license by NP Aerospace (the company that made the previous combat helmets).
+Tremulousnut it's not a American helmet. this is a British design the new body armour and helmets got nothing to do with the Americans. we are the only country in the world who are useing it
Britishcomedy channel Go onto the Revision website. It is the Revision Batlskin Cobra. Britain have been using Revision products for a while now.
+Tremulousnut I have done research on it and it is based on the Mark 7 helmet. I'm sure it's a shared designed with the Americans. but who cares who makes it or who designed it. as long as it does the job is supposed to do and gives better protection for our British soldiers.
+Britishcomedy channel
It's not "based on" the MK 7 in the sense that the helmet was designed with the MK 7 in mind - The MOD was looking for a helmet with the same principles as the MK7 (being able to shoot from a variety of positions without obstruction of view), and the Cobra Batlskin happened to fit that category. Why was it chosen? We may never know, there's many bean-counter reasons that are never revealed until a few years after it's issued to everyone.
The Batlskin Cobra Plus is a repackaged version of their existing Cobra line of helmets for the British contract as you can tell with the "Plus" designation. Just correcting you that it's an American helmet.
Anyone else not loving the rails on the Cobra helmet?
what about AGAINST HE shells?
SO why not test it DIRECTLY against HE gun cannons of WWII or such?
So what if it was a VERY BIG bored HE gun cannon - so suppose:
1.) 75 mm HE shells from the Sherman Tank or the Panzer IV or Panther Tank?
2.) 88 mm HE shells from the Tiger I Tank or 88mm HE from the Tiger Ausf B?
2.) 105 mm M101 / M102 HE shells?
3.) 122 mm Soviet gun cannons?
4.) 152 mm gun cannons?
5.) 155 mm gun cannons?
6.) 130 mm gun canons?
7.) Or even 175 mm gun cannons or bigger gun canons? So like the 203 mm Howitzers? Or 300 mm HE siege guns?
so if this armor suit got a DIRECT PUNCH from any of these shells OR if it runs a gauntlet test of ONE shot how would it fare?
i hope you are trolling
it could handle it.
john harker What about a REPEATED DIRECT BARRAGE from EACH of these guns?
OR IF ALL THE GUNS FIRED ON IT AT ONCE?!
OR could it endure perhaps an A-BOMB?!
Yes. But you might need to wear that weird dirtbike helmet to stop the A-bomb
Imagine a world where money is dumped into people not war and killing.
Unfortunately that's never going to happen
Yep. And then we wake up.
And then a bunch of werewolves shredded their armour instantly. RIP M80
It's not bloody halo
Playing catch up really... For years I've seen airsoft players with better kit than the army.
+Sean “hivemindsean” .Hirst But Airsoft players don't need bullet proof kit mate, Airsoft is playing soldier like I did when I was ten.
+Sean “hivemindsean” .Hirst Lmao so you carry bullet proof vests for airsoft?
Not to mention privately owned equipment is better than what the military uses. If we allowed our soldiers to carry what they want, they would be better equipped than even navy seals.
What I'm trying to imply is that for years the army has been poorly equipped. But if you two fucktards want to start chatting shit about pointless bollocks, then go for it.
Sean .Hirst No fair enough you are right. I just couldn't resist the opportunity to bad mouth airsofters.
Fucktards? Who's the FUCKTARD comparing his shitty little airsoft to the real thing junior?
Is the US getting this good stuff
They've got their own good stuff, and are doing the exact same as the British, making their Armour lighter and giving better face protection expected to start issue in 2019.
As the british introduce this badass looking gear. the Americans introduce a fucking mechanical exoskeleton suit.
No, the US doesen't. They didn't even manage to indroduce the "land warrior" system. Meanwhile germany and even poland, yes you heard right, poland are indroducing far more advanced systems.
Jonny lmaooo no they are not
Who is 'they' and what are 'they' not?
Jonny Germany has no stealth fighters or bombers USA made it first Germany has no close air supporter like the a10 Germany is not building rail guns everybody is behind the Americans we are working on exo suits if you didn't know
I'm talking about the infantry equipment. An in this case, the US lacks horribly behind.
Why aren't they wearing Dragon Skin?
Dragon's Skin is utterly shit. they tried to reinvent Chain Mail but failed.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Skin
Stefan Turton lmaooo true this guy is an idiot.
Kit Gibson because it doesn't work in hot climates or at certain temperatures
i would happily join the army, but for the bad clothes
massively overequiped, are modern armies
why make these poor people wear shirts under jumpers
Dragon skin would have been a better choice depending on cost.
electricsoup100 doesn't work in hot weather
Just get an exo suit
and you have won the war
You have 3 minutes to go apex before your batteries run out and u go back to ure CO like a kid with his Xbox controller asking for more batteries
That biker looking helmet just looks ridiculous. The last thing you think about protecting during a battle is your face (eyes excluded of course).
+Sulla
It could be used for Gunners on top of armored vehicles to protect their faces, I seriously doubt it will be used by regular infantry due to how bulky it is.
Joseph F
"The helmet can be fitted with both mandible guard and visor, or either, which provide face protection for crews in open vehicles such as Jackal or WMIK."
www.army.mod.uk/equipment/23216.aspx
You get a clue, Infantry need mobility, a large face mask can also stop a rifleman from using his weapon very well, with the face mask stopping him positioning his head to look through his scope, this is especially bad for marksmen.
I seriously get the feeling you don't know anything about body Armour and headgear.
The current MK 7 headgear is only designed to stop up to a .45, helmets are mostly used to stop shrapnel.
No helmet in the world is designed to stop a rifle round.
If they made them, it would be too heavy and when it stopped the round the persons head would be thrown back, breaking the users neck.
Don't talk about thing you haven't got a clue about
"smaller, lighter"...less protection
Joseph Elias Wrong.
Not getting hit is already a form of protection
Looks exactly like the armor US Marines have been issued since the gulf war
Jacob Stephens emphasis on "looks"
Jacob Stephens yea the us army already had this so did the marines nothing new
do we need the silly action music
Can we all just admit they need proper woodland camo again?
I'd prefer to see full ballistics testing of this new armour!!! it looks too light weight to give any real protection, I'm guessing they'd add extra ballistic plates like the current armour the troops wear.. ie! this maybe just another flying donkey aka not fit for purpose but looks nice "as they our government see to waste money on junk before buying usable equipment"
Mal P Well it's not the actual vest that does the protecting, it's the plates inside them.
British Forces + American Forces = Unstoppable
Everyone in the comments think they know better lol
