Why is the UK Refusing to Return the Parthenon Marbles to Greece?

  • Brexit was a messy affair. And that animosity is playing out in a long running dispute between the UK and EU over the Parthenon Marbles. The Ancient Greek relics date back more than 2,400 years, and are now housed at the British museum. Greece has demanded their return but the UK says the artifacts are staying in London. And it’s not the first time the UK has refused to return what many call, looted treasures.

    It's getting unacceptable. The Parthenon is undergoing restoration and it needs the originals in order to complete the temple, especially as use as a reference point to how to reproduce the quality of it at the main site. There is no reason why the BA can't maintain replicas instead and return the originals. In the past the might of Greece would've seen a reason to go to full scale war over something like this.

    • @Matt-zq8cz
      @Matt-zq8cz Před 2 lety +3

      I believe they have plaster copies of the originals currently in the UK. Therefore, they're able to use those for the restoration if need be. I believe the originals currently in Greece are permanently kept in a museum overlooking the Parthenon. So, the temple is never going to be fully "complete". With that said, these pieces are not the UK's history to admire and reflect on; they're Greece's. And as such, they belong to the Greeks, despite whatever questionable ways the UK acquired them.

    For the few ones who say that all things can be returned if the Parthenon sculptures are returned. To that I say no. Europe's museums are FULL with Greek sculptures. The biggest prized pieces in the biggest museums like Louvre and the Greek goddess Nike (to which even the brand Nike has it's name from, meaning victory) are a testimony to this. But even though it's best to have them all in Greece, but Greek civilization is truly among all of us like no other civilization. As Greek civilization and it's roots of sciences, democracy, laws, and so so many things that is now part of our modern day societies, Greek civilization is truly massively important till this very day. Nobody makes Pyramids as a house, and nobody makes ziggurats for example.
    So in general I am understanding of why thousands and thousands of Greek artifacts among countries all around the globe has a value in celebrating Greek civilization which we ALL benefit from. However. The Parthenon sculptures are another thing. They hold great importance to Greece and they were stolen. I am sure many more things got stolen, to which Greece will not make a claim on. But this is documented as being stolen, and the parthenon frieze sculptures are PART of the Parthenon and it's other half of sculptures that resides in the wonderful Acropolis museum.
