    Hello everyone! This is a brief study of the concept of compression and how it applies to singing.
    When I first heard the word "compression" in relation to singing, I immediately felt this was something that was missing in my vocal technique. Years of searching for a knowledgable voice teacher led me to the concepts of the Swedish-Italian school of singing where I began to master the concepts of breath support which include compression.
    I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful in terms of understanding how compression works!

    Wow, super big aha moment for me! Something wasn’t right with my compression, now I get it. A simple, put your hands on your chest, made me realize this is how I know my diaphragm is working. This makes it easy to push the air upward and out of the throat.Thanks isn’t enough, but Thanks.

    I don't know what you put in that scale, but it works- I was able to sing Soundgarden and Guns and Roses songs last night without a crack. The Caruso scale also helped me shed vocal weight. Thank you!

    Great to see another top notch video, Jeff! Taking on compression is a big deal, but you've approached it in a very controlled, easily applied way while explaining its use in a non-rock/metal context, which is generally where I see compression and hyper-glottal compression discussed.
    As I've said on other comments on YT, you're one of only three singing teachers on CZcams who I trust completely and whose material has proven to be consistently genuine, practical, accurate and useful. Thanks again for providing such fantastic material, I hope all's well with you!

    OMG Jeff your are my new favorite!!! I have been singing rock music in bands for over 20 years. I wish this was available back in day. I have been diagnosed with dysphonia and I am battling to get my voice back. I worked with some great therapists at the University of Michigan and I am working with a student at the University for voice lessons now. Your stuff is spot on!!! Thanks so much for offering these videos. I definitely am going to check out your dvd too. Even though I am a mature singer now, I want to keep singing as long as I can. Thanks:)

      teri walalce Thank you Teri! I work with a lot of mature singers and have seen the concepts bring renewed energy and youthfulness back to "mature" voices. The voice is an amazing instrument and can regain much of what was thought to be lost! Thanks for your comment! Keep singing 🎤

    Just clarify, the abdomen engagement happens at the same time you start doing the hiss. However, when singing, that engagement must happen before you start singing, correct?

    • @JeffAlaniStanfill
      @JeffAlaniStanfill  Před 5 lety

      Athus Fernando Music the abdominal engagement happens simultaneously with the hiss. Try hissing with your hands on belly. You don’t have to put any pressure there but just having your hands there will inform you how much engagement there is. Your belly should come in naturally by itself the moment you start the hiss. I hope this helps you! Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe if you haven’t already! Peace and joy to you. Jeff

    • @athusfernandomusic9650

      Jeff Alani Stanfill
      Right, I understand it happens simultaneously with the hiss.
      But when you actually sing a song, it should be engaged before singing right? Not simultaneously with the note.

      Does the abdominal go in and out for every staccato vowel or it just remains outward till you take in a fresh set of air
