Watching Dirk KILL this just reminded me what a loss Nick Menza was. The brilliant COMPOSITION of this and all of his drum parts. That lineup of Megadeth was lightning in a bottle, for sure.
Are people really complaining here? This sounds great. Menza had that shotgun blast type of sound. Gar on the other hand had a softer, yet more loose type playing which gave him a very unique dynamic. Dirk here has a blend of both. It's as if, this is what it would of sounded like had Gar been on Rust in peace. This was excellent.
He may be the shot in the arm megadeth needs. Hats off to Dirk for being that shot. People will disagree, but besides Shaun, always had the raddest drummers in the biz, to name a few. Welcome aboard, LOVE YOUR SHOWMANSHIP, rock on!! ;)

One of my favourite vids on YT is Nick Menza’s version of this for Soultone Cymbals. It is just perfect so I have some bias so to the comparison apart from a few loose rims at the start to which my drum teacher used to chant you always have to hit the centre of the drum head like a Whiplash Michael Caine. Nick plays a slight variation on the bass drum at times but very commendable and shoots right into number 3 on my list of favourite Megadeth drummers. Obviously that excludes Vinnie C as he is next level and then more levels not unlike Anton Fig when he played briefly with Kiss. Another next level drummer. I am really just talking about official Megadeth members.
Fantastic drummer! Very Megadeth-like sound. Almost a blend between Gar and Nick with his own musicality and sound especially by playing at the end of the beat, something difficult to do which makes the performance more musical while accenting the groove. Terrific player! A salute to you, Dirk!
Hah, I'd say Shaun was a Volvo. Reliable, worked, but nothing impressive. He's the main reason I can't really listen to the Rust In Peace anniversary album.
Sure he doesn't have Nick's style, but nobody does. I think he might be perfect for future megadeth however, because the direction megadeth has been going is faster and heavier. If you don't think Dirk is going to put some serious spice in whatever new material comes out, you're wrong. The subtle polyrythm stuff in soilwork is nuts. Give him a chance before you put him down.
In terms of soilwork - Dirk is definitely one of the tastiest in the genre. I'd even go as far as one of the best in the business in his class - topped by only a few such as Chris Adler. Long story short, my prediction is mustaine will suck the life out of Dirk's drumming just like he did with Adler on Dystopia. Sometimes when you get these tech/melodic death metal master drummers it's kinda interesting how they feel a bit 'flat' and almost 'lost' when it comes to the 4/4 stuff - like their brains are wired in polyrhythmic phrasing and that's their swing and with that removed, it feels stiff. His feel in soilwork is incredible and here he is almost just average. And like I said, for Mustaine to choke Adler's skill like he did, I can't see Dirk having any better luck. He's 100% in that seat for the paycheck. Which is cool, dude's given a lot to his genre (which is notoriously tight on funds) and deserves some dough.

Dirk was a legend long before he joined Megadeth - this is pretty much a relaxing Sunday walk in the park compared to his work in other bands. The guy is the Ninja master of blast beats, unusual time signatures, and double kick. Compare him to a metronome- he is always dead on - it’s insane.
The great thing about Dirk is that he keeps it hungry. He knows he is following greats. Shit, he's one of the greats in his own right. You listen to him long enough and I think you'll realize that He's right at the top.
Come on, he's so much better than Drover. Nick and Gar were incredible drummers but nothing will bring them back. Accept the new blood, he has a great track record, he's on point and isn't afraid to go his own way. Nick and Gar would be proud. Interested to see what Megadeth's next album will sound like with Dirk on it. Plus he's the first drummer since Nick who actually looks like he's having fun doing what he does.
