- Big Ben, the huge clock bell of Britain's Parliament, is now silent as a four-year restoration project gets underway on the Victorian clock and the Elizabeth Tower (formerly known as Clock Tower). The bell has sounded the time almost uninterrupted since 1859 and rings out at 118 decibels - the equivalent of a jet plane taking off. (AP Video with historical footage via British Movietone)

back in the 1880s when Big Ben was young, you could hear the clock for 20 miles, but when cars became more of a thing, you can hear him for about a mile.

The guy that says the bells should still ring isn't considering the welfare of the workers carrying out the project. It would be disruptive to the renovation project because the workers would have to cover their ears every 15 minutes to allow the clock to strike the bells. It would also be a risk to their safety.

How come the sound of the bells changed over the year

because the pitch of them changes as the metal gets older for some reason
At 1890, it was even more high pitched because the tower was just built. At 1930, it might be rusting a bit but still healthy and loud. At 1990, it’s our tower
