Nuclear weapons and Wagner in Belarus: A threat to Ukraine and NATO? | To the Point

  • Could Russia’s disarray mean gain for Ukraine? Although its counteroffensive has made slow progress, morale rose following the failed march on Moscow by the Wagner group, whose brutal tactics have spilled much Ukrainian blood. The longer-term fate of Wagner’s mercenaries could well be decided in neighboring Belarus, where the Group’s leader and thousands of its forces appear to have set up camp. That’s not the only threat Belarus is housing: to the consternation of eastern European NATO Members, Russia is also deploying tactical nuclear weapons there - with explicit approval from Belarus’ autocratic leader Alexander Lukaschenko. So we’re asking: Nuclear Weapons and Wagner in Belarus: A threat to Ukraine and NATO?

Isn't it amazing how Russia dares deploy nuclear weapons to the borders of the EU / NATO (in Belarus) and russophiles don't say a word. But can you imagine how Russia would react if NATO deployed nuclear weapons to a country bordering Russia (like the Baltic states or Norway) and how loud russophiles would be, claiming that's a provocation. Russia can start a war when it "feels threatened" but NATO is somehow supposed to stay silent when nuclear weapons are put on its doorstep. NATO should consider ANY action from Belarus from now on as an act of war, even if it is only against Ukraine.

From the start of this war Belarus has allowed Russia to attack Ukrainian civilians almost daily from Belarusian territory they invaded Ukraine from Belarus territory and all this other stuff they're doing and have yet to declare war, I mean Belarus is just as culpable as Russia is at this point and should be dealt with just the same. The Belarusian military only has about 30,000 men and could be wiped out in three days by a capable force. And Wagner wants no part of fighting NATO they already tried that in Syria against the US Marines and got mangled losing two whole battalions with only 37 survivors that were sent to Guantanamo.

Lukashenko does not trust his own army so it was natural for the Belarusian leader to try and shore up his security by using mercenaries. Whether Wagner has enough troops to actually attack Ukraines northern border is doubtful. Belarus has already been warned that an attack on Ukraine would bring Polish forces to aid in Ukraines defense

Wagner in Belarus housing Tactical Nukes. You left out the third faze Ramzan Akhmadovich Kadyrov who openly called for use of Nuclear Weapons.
The scenario you describe is a very dangerous one. If Wagner, Kadyrov, and Lukashenko were to get together and use nuclear weapons, it would have catastrophic consequences. The use of nuclear weapons would likely lead to a nuclear war, which could potentially destroy the world.
It is important to remember that nuclear weapons are not toys. They are incredibly destructive weapons that should only be used as a last resort. If they were to be used, the consequences would be unimaginable.
I hope that the three men you mentioned will not do anything rash. The use of nuclear weapons would be a disaster for everyone involved.
Here are some additional thoughts on the matter:
    * Wagner is a private military company that is known for its brutality. They have been accused of war crimes in Syria and other countries.
    * Kadyrov is the leader of Chechnya, a Russian republic. He is a close ally of Putin and has been accused of human rights abuses.
    * Lukashenko is the president of Belarus. He is a dictator who has cracked down on dissent in his country.
These three men are all dangerous individuals who have shown a willingness to use violence. If they were to get together and use nuclear weapons, it would be a major escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.
It is important to remember that nuclear weapons are not the only way to win a war. There are other, more peaceful ways to resolve conflict. I hope that these three men will choose the path of peace and avoid using nuclear weapons.

So if I understand more or less correctly, Wagner is no more a significant entity as such, but all of its weapons are now available to the Russian MOD and it is logical to assume that a good portion of its manpower is available for fighting in Ukraine. From what we know for sure, the rebel column made it to Rostov, filled up with ammo and beelined back to Ukraine totally unhindered. Prygozhyn has "disappeared", Surovikin "arrested" but we're not really sure, are we? So I would not be surprised if Russia launched a last ditch offensive in the East, during which any hint of operational success would be soon followed by the reappearance of both these clowns on the scene, restored as heroes. As for Putin's demise, it could be that his dame is to avoid the Hague by making like he is responsible for nothing after all... he has been fed wrong information from the start, you see. Most notably, he ostensibly made himself a clown internationally by publicly listing patently fictional purported Ukrainian losses on the ground. Total control under the cover of a projected unsurmountable weakness, that' what seems to be Putin's smallest Matryoshka doll.

    • @09csr

No chance. Wagner committed multiple warcrimes and killed (and were killed by) Ukrainians just weeks ago. And while some of Belarus' people may be pro-Ukraine, Lukashenko isn't. He'd need to be ousted for that to even be possible, and even that is no guarantee of Putin can help it. The closest thing we'd come to what you describe is a three-way war.

      No, need nor desire.
Dropping nukes that close to other NATO countries would be undesirable.
The effective deterrent is going to be Moscow, St. Petersburg and bases in Russia despite where they launch from.
Belorussian threats can be eliminated conventionally without NATO sending in ground forces.
Russia doesn't want any part of a fight with NATO or they would have attacked one of the smaller Baltic countries.
