  • Buy A Harley. Harley Davidsons Secret and a little added value you get when purchasing or owning a Harley Davidson. This is a true story of an experience I had with several Harley Davidson Dealerships I encountered during my motorcycle road trip to KRiver for the #stubbornamerican party in Moyers, OK. We all know Harley Davidson #motorcycles are expensive, and sometimes we complain about it. But, I've owned my #roadglidespecial for almost tow years and I'm just finding out about this little added value. Let me know, Have you heard of this before? If so, have you taken advantage of this? #fullthrottlehog #harleydavidsonroadtrip #bikebrokedown #tripinterruption

      So my question, as an almost squid...(I mean, newbie, an almost newbie) what is the big benefit here? Granted, I am not in this CZcamsrs demographic that I can tell. I'm like two notches of hunting and killing my food and an outhouse situation at all times. I'm looking at ways to stay frugal and improve so I won't retire this way. I have had to learn to repair and troubleshoot complex problems involving mechanical and/electrical on vehicles kind of impoverished. "Have a neighborhood guy fab a piece to slide a grade 11 bolt through to be able to work kind" of situation. What I am trying to ask is, is this the brand to go to if you travel a lot on bikes or find yourself in upper middle class income-to-debt ratio level? (I know a guy that went to five states in a jeep to go see some sights with like $800 within the past 10 years. His income-to-debt ratio was really good...in debt to nothing)

    My wife and I were on our way back from WI to FL on an extended trip and had a sidewall blowout on I75 about 30 miles north of Tifton, GA H=D. Not a good experience, but called Road America from our HOG membership and soon picked up and taken to Tifton H-D on Labor Day. We were concerned that we would be there for at least a day since they were very busy with their core customers. We did get head of the line when they asked if we were on a trip and they explained it to those waiting in line and all agreed to get us back on the road. All went well and we were thankful they were even open on Labor Day. Perhaps like you explained, "trip interruption" worked for us as well. Thank you.

    Five years I was on a solo trip from Florida to California on my 2012 electra glide and the stater went out.
    No charging l was in trouble. Had an appointment at a harley dealer in Fresno cal. Ended up at the wrong dealership by mistake. They asked me what was wrong . I told them and they called the other dealership and since I was at Mathew harley davidson they would take care of me.they got me right in
    They changed the stator and he even changed the voltage regulator said they wanted to make sure I made back to Florida . Did all that and washed
    my bike that day . That's why you buy a harley. Thank you Mathew Harley Davidson I will always remember your Kindness and help to a Traveler.

    I'm a certified Harley and Honda motorcycle mechanic. I've ridden an evo sportster all over the country with no problems . Yet the Eight Harley is not nearly as reliable. They are fraught with problems. I prefer my metric motorcycles, find them far less expensive to maintain as well as more reliable.

    • @davebarnessr.5805
      @davebarnessr.5805 Před 2 lety

      I’ve rode metrics my whole life and yes they cost a lot less to maintain. In 2012 I caved to my lust for the HD Fatboy since it’s birth in 1990, and special ordered my 2012 Fatboy Lo in Denim Black, which was the first yr the Fatboy actually got fatter with the 103 twin , 200 mm rear tire and a wider frame to accommodate the wider birthing. I still own and love this bike and the fact that I have a Fatboy means that I’m probably much higher now in social circles ( Hey I gotta Harley!) But I have a Yamaha VStar 1100 that’s loud with V and H pipes, rejetted carbs with a Kuryakin hypercharger that gives another 8 percent boost in power and Man this Thing will scream, I take it on out of state road trips with the wife because it’s setup for 2 up riding w/passenger boards and custom luggage designed for this particular setup, Anyway, it did not take me long to learn just regular maintenance is a lot higher on the Fatboy then the Yamaha which I also love. As for the Fatboy? It’s not going anywhere, I’ve grown accustom to the status quo it gives me , even if it’s just in my head !

    I had a 1986 fxrd bought in 1987 we put over 70,000 miles on the bike many of the miles pulling a trailer. On a trip from Massachusetts to Milwaukee we had some construction debris get caught in the belt and damage the rear pulley. Of course pouring rain! Bike kept going we made it to Cleveland hd. They took us in immediately pulling a local bike off the lift to work on ours. This was a major job to replace belt and pulley on that bike I believe they had to pull the swing arm. Kept the dealership open an hour late to finish the job and offered to have us stay over at the mechanics house! This was in 1993 so the trip interrupted service has been around a long time. On my 7th harley now I'm 74 yrs old wouldn't even consider another brand. My wife and I have been together over 40 yrs and about 300,000miles on Harleys. Never broke down never been stranded. Had 2 bikes over 70,000miles most 30 to 50 thousands.

    I had a 2015 SGS on ride through Arizona on the way to New Mexico from California when my gear shift spline went out and I couldn't get a tow out the the location that I broke down. I contacted Grand Canyon HD and told me to get it in before they closed and they would take care of me. Left with few options I managed to ride it about 30 miles through the hills to while shifting gears by kicking my heel on the lever that moves the gear shift linkage instead of the gear shift lever (Scary). I made in about 5 minutes till they closed and they took my bike right in and fixed it in about 40 minutes, under warranty. A big thumbs up for them working over to take care of a traveling HD rider.

    I've been riding Harley's since 2002 and I've never heard of trip interruption before. I've also been lucky and never had anything major go wrong with any of the bikes I've had. That includes my 2001 Fatboy. Everyone talks about the chain tensioner going out on the twin cam 88. I had 45,000 on that bike when I sold it and never had a problem. Knock on wood I never have to use trip interruption but it's nice to know it's there.
    Glad you got good service on the road. I know there's some crappy dealerships out there not really offering the best service but I think most try to help the riders.

  • @grayghost1423
    @grayghost1423 Před 2 lety +5

    I bet your clutch problem was the transfer issue that is common on the hydraulic clutch bikes. Basically your transmission fluid migrates to the primary. You have shifting issues as your transmission oil transfers to the chaincase. Your transmission goes low on oil and is destroyed in extreme cases. Probably the reason for the first problem. Thanks for sharing, liked and subscribed.

      This should not happen. I own a different brand bike from one of the most reliable manufacturers. It's an 1800cc twin and its 21 years old now. I have never serviced the clutch, ever and have never had a single issue. I might have gone along a different path 30 years ago when I was an E-3 going into San Diego HD to buy a Sportster and they would not give me the time of day. I was a ghost as salesmen brushed past as I tried to get help. I had drunk the HD cool aid and was willing but that brush off changed my riding path. I bought a bike from one of the big 4 and put 39,000 miles on it in 2.5 years until the clutch cable popped on the way to work and I traded it in. Flawless reliability. After discharge I scratched that itch again and bought some original Triumphs and BSA's made a hobby of keeping them running I found that certain 4 manufacturers always delivered bikes that simply ran every time and they never left me stranded, ever. I stopped beating my head on the wall of British motorcycle ownership and HD treatment of a paying customer killed any desire for me. I want a bike to ride, not a lifestyle or a costume to wear. It takes a certain tenacity to buy bikes that are less than dependable I would know. It's simply not something I want to deal with any longer.

I decided to rent a bike because we would be coming back the same route. It took them 5 days to diagnose, order the part, and install. It is too bad other vehicle dealers do not have this travelers first practice. Something else to consider, how often do people visit their dealer for no reason what so ever and then look at a Harley dealer. Maybe other manufacturers can learn something from Harley.

    This is the main reason I went back to Harley. I shopped for a new bike. I considered an Indian. I used to commute on a Bmw. And a yamaha.
    My ride to work is 400 miles in the Gulf coast. Eight harley dealers and independents along the way. One Bmw dealer, one indian dealer. Parts avalability for other bikes on the road is tough.
    Metric bike dealers are not very accommodating to travelers .
    Harley has always gone out of their way. Tires, services and the rare breakdown. Even just Dyi in their parking lot for repairs.

    Glad your “Trip Interruption” was honored. Some dealerships near me in Northern Illinois will tell you “tough luck”. Also if it’s a major rally, you may be out of luck. Just keep that in mind. Everyone is on a trip.
    I have had luck with it in other areas. 4 Rivers H-D in Paducah, KY was solid on that for me though. Replaced brackets on an 05 Road King Custom in 30 minutes to get me rolling again.

    Yep, that's what makes a company great, when their customers no matter where from are a number one priority. The Harley Davidson corporation must tell it's employees to spread this " WE ARE CUSTOMER FREINDLY AND THIS IS OUR POLICY " and how it works to all Harley owners and this will sell more Harley cycles. Someone should come up with the idea of when you purchase a used Harley you can also purchase a warranty per year to repair your cycle in any dealer within the United States and the warranty can be purchased individually for a example ( Engine , Transmission , Brakes , Clutch repair including clutch disks and etc. ) , this warranty will be offered to Harley owners , again this warranty can be purchased by the owner as to what part of the cycle should be warrantied for service, or a warranty for any service done on a Harley where it will cover a certain percentage of the bill. When customers are a companies number one priority the companies reputation will be number one. I'm still looking for that first Harley and so far at my age the Heritage will be my second soul mate.

    Back in the carbie days, before a road trip I had my HD Sportser serviced by a HD dealer, which included a Factory recall on the rubber diaphram inside the carbi. The bike started to play up (engine stalling every 15 minutes or so) at about 250km out. I struggled into a country town at about lunch time where there was a Honda dealership but no Harley dealership. Knowing I was on a road trip the Honda dealership service manager said the mechanics are at lunch but he would have them look at the bike 1st thing when they get back. Within 1 and half hours I was back on the road. The HD dealership had incorrectly installed the replacement diaphram (installed it back-to-front). I was charged a small fee which I was able to successfully claim back from the HD dealer.

It’s been a great experience, tons of people saying hello and compliments on the bike. I didn’t know about the willingness to prioritize a rider on a big trip, but I might have guessed that this is true just from the way I have been made to feel like my first experience be a really positive one.

Sure enough I wasn't a member but they helped me arrange a tow to the local Harley dealer. I called the dealer and gave them a heads up about my situation. They said we will get it replaced but it will take awhile. Well about 3-4 hrs. latter they were done. I was happy and on the road again. At my local Harley dealer several yrs. ago a fellow brought his bike in. He was passing through on a road trip. They put him up towards the front of the line and he was happy.
