  • Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller "The Thing," paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they're infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.
Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up.
When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.
"The Thing" serves as a prelude to John Carpenter's classic 1982 film of the same name.

From using the same scenes, similar cinematography, and near-identical plot with no deviation (eg. kill it with flame, specimen from the ice comes alive in the base and starts killing dogs, then people etc). If it really was a prequel, then it failed pretty badly at that job, because it just spoils everything about the 1982 movie, but does it all worse.

Honestly a misunderstood and severely over-hated movie.
Yes it's a disappointment, the effects are cheap, and it's only a shadow of what it could have been, but it does everything it can to serve the original.
The team behind this movie sought to make a truly amazing prequel, and at one point they actually had it, with sick practical effects and all. Meddling higher-ups forced them to change it, way too close to the deadline at that. Even through this struggle, they still delivered the best take on "The Thing" that they possibly could. The sheer attention to detail shows it.

While I enjoyed both movies, I found this prequel to be Ok.
Sure the original is better, but this is a nice addition to know what happened in that camp. Its a shame the original was more serious and believable, this prequel is way too focused on scare you, the original was more about the alien trying to survive, not to intentionally scare people like this prequel did.
It just feel like it had potential but was wasted to meet current clichés, its tries to hard to be a horror movie instead of Sci-Fi.
Yet, its a good movie, and yes, much better than a lot of crap hollywood have been releasing.

Not really, i don't consider Carpenter's film to be a "remake" of The Thing from Another World as they are 2 completely different films. It's a separate yet direct adaptation of 1938's original novella "Who Goes There" by John W Campbell and the 1951 film The Thing from Another World was a poor adaptation.
To me the definition of a remake is when it's based on a motion picture produced earlier and it's original screenplay (one not based on any existing source materials being books, comics and novellas) like say The Blob or The Hills Have Eyes, TRUE remakes in every sense of the world.

@@carlindurfee7566 The Thing (1982), begins with an incident and from then on the tension starts to build slowly, followed by suspicion and paranoia, as each character realises that they can't trust any of the others. Any of the others could be a perfect copy. They also know what the consequences will be if it escapes the freezing temperatures of the antarctic .The atmosphere is incredible. The dialogue is brilliant and delivered by each actor so naturaly. There are some laugh out loud moments too ,though its far from being a comedy. For me though, the main reason i love it, is because of the characters and their believability and likeability. Each character is likeable. To me, its like watching Jaws when the three guys are in the boat in the second half of the movie, or even the first half with the mayor. Or the original Salems Lot with David Soul.
To sum up, its not the scary bits i love The Thing for. Its the interplay between this group of likeable normal guys who are trapped in a nightmare situation that they have no control of.

NO, Carpenter's film is NOT a "remake " of the earlier film, i think you got the title names confused. I consider them 2 separate completely different adaptations of the same original source material "Who Goes There" by John Campbell, the first adaptation in 1951 was called "The Thing from Another World" yet was a very very loose adaptation, there is no film in 1951 called "The Thing". In 1982 John Carpenter made the second adaptation of campbell's book called "The Thing" and it was more true to the novella than Nyby's film ever was.
The definition of a remake is "a motion picture based on a film produced earlier" which is not the case with the John Carpenter film. That would be like saying that every Dracula movie is a "remake" of the Bela Lugosi film or the silent film Nosferatu which is factually incorrect. Obviously they are all separate adaptions of the Bram Stoker novel. Another good example are the films I Am Legend, The Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth all based on the Richard Matheson novel I Am Legend. None of the films have anything to do with each other aside from all being based on the same source material.

Well considering that John carpenter made the thing because of how much of a fan he was of the thing from another world then you could go either way with it. He wouldn’t have remade it if it wasn’t for the 1951 version.

Except his movie has little in common with The Thing from Another World, he didn't want to remake that movie but instead do a direct adaptation of Who Goes There by John W Campbell as sure he was a fan of the earlier adaptation but a bigger fan of the novella

On the flip side, Carpenter had nearly an entire year (June '81-May '82) to cast, shoot, and edit for theatrical release. By comparison, Producer Van Heinekken got barely 5 months to do the same for his "prequel". Universal wouldn't give the extra time or money. And it showed, I still dig the 2011 Thing though.
