    Great video but I am surprised you didn't add Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar to the list. I would say he is one of the best Voltron Selesnya commanders out there because he protects himself and can draw you cards all from the command zone

      Good call! I don't have any experience with Kutzil because he's so new, and I'm not sure anyone has developed a tried-and-true list for him yet, but you're definitely right that he has the makings for a strong Voltron commander. The lists I've tinkered with have focused more on going wide with creatures to maximize the draw triggers you can get off his ability, but going tall on Kutzil himself makes a lot of sense to me too. Thanks for the comment!

    Great Channel! I’m new to Pauper EDH and it has become one of my favorite game modes for MTG. You definitely have one of the best channels for it. For boros voltron not having draw, is akiri, fearless voyager CPDH viable? it got an uncommon print in cmm

      Thanks so much for watching! People have tried brewing with Akiri (she was everywhere right after she got downshifted), but no one was able to come up with a list that felt quite competitive enough yet. Which isn't to say there isn't one out there, or that new cards getting printed won't turn her viable in the near future -- her abilities are both strong, and she does provide card advantage from the command zone, so it's definitely possible that Akiri is worth revisiting.

    I'm quite fond of my Ardenn + Rograkh edh deck but it really struggles with card draw in pdh, thanks for the ideas

    Great video! What are your thoughts on Venomthrope from the warhammer precons?

    • @ankylosaurmtg
      @ankylosaurmtg  Před 4 měsíci

      I've never played with or against the deck, so my thoughts aren't super informed, but: I like that Venomthrope can both be a standard Voltron commander (load it up with Rancors and Ancestral Masks and so forth) with built-in evasion, and also, because it has deathtouch, you can run all the Hermetic Study/Psionic Gift effects and turn it into an Avatar of Woe, as with Nightveil Predator.
      You lose out on some of the black control cards that you get with Nightveil, but you do get the juicy green auras (and Snake Umbra, which can be huge), so it's sort of a mix between Nightveil and Slippery Bogle. Verdict: probably a sweet Voltron commander! Thanks for bringing it up!

    I just think the amount of edicts in the format make it really hard to do

    • @ankylosaurmtg
      @ankylosaurmtg  Před 8 měsíci

      Edicts are a factor for sure -- there are 5 or 6 good ones in the format that can really ruin a Voltron deck's day. I don't have the data on how often Edicts see play, but I do get the feeling that most Black/x decks are running at least a few. Though Black as a color has been somewhat underrepresented as of late, so if there were a time to try to make Voltron viable, now might be it? Thanks for the comment!

      @CommonConnoisseurs Před 8 měsíci

      Every Voltron deck has access to edict protection either through counterspells or creatures that shield us from Edicts, hardly invalidates the archetype.

    • @ankylosaurmtg
      @ankylosaurmtg  Před 8 měsíci

      This is a great point, and something I could have clarified more in the video -- when playing Voltron, just because you have one big threat, that doesn't mean that you can't run smaller creatures to soak damage or protect from Fleshbag Marauders and such, and the control elements I mentioned (counterspells and so forth) can keep those effects at bay as well. Thanks for expanding on this!

    How do you feel about killian ink dualist. Getting mana reduction as early as turn 2 and being in black in white with lifelink and menace. It’s feel like he could be a very strong contender but I haven’t seen him played enough

    • @ankylosaurmtg
      @ankylosaurmtg  Před 5 měsíci +1

      I also haven't seen Killian played before, though you're right, lifelink + menace + cost reduction is a great combination of abilities on a two-drop. Though looking at Scryfall, there aren't a ton of proactive auras that benefit greatly from his cost reduction. Lots of Arrest-style auras to shut down opposing creatures, but the best auras to suit Killian up with are already pretty cheap, like Ethereal Armor and All That Glitters, or colored-mana intensive, like Empyrial Armor.
      That said, I may try to whip up a Killian list to see if I can make him work. There are definitely some pods where I imagine he could really shine. Thanks for the comment!

      @starnesnj97 Před 5 měsíci

      @@ankylosaurmtg I kind of agree. Tho I think he could be a decent control style commander. His biggest downfall in my opinion is the lack of card draw.

    • @ankylosaurmtg
      @ankylosaurmtg  Před 5 měsíci

      @@starnesnj97 I agree with that -- I definitely value card draw in my Voltron decks, and while there are a bunch of Night's Whisper/Read the Bones-style cards you could run, there's always a tension between using your mana to advance a board state/deal with your opponents vs. casting card draw spells to refuel. Whereas something like Satyr Enchanter gets to do both at the same time, so its 1-for-1 aura-based removal spells become cantrips.
      Maybe Killian's cost reduction helps make up for this difference, though? So you can more easily Arrest something for W and cast a Sign in Blood in the same turn. It's worth testing, I think.
