Victoria is a state in Australia. Australian Football was founded as a way of keep cricketers fit during off-season. The first match was played between Scotch College and Melbourne Grammar in 1858.

The history of Australian Rules Football started two decades before the VFL(Victorian Football League), with the oldest and longest continuous football competition in the world by the South Australian National Football League(SANFL) formerly the South Australian Football Association(SAFA) in 1877; this was closely followed the same year, by the Victorian Football Association(VFA). The VFL came into effect through several VFA clubs leaving to form their own competitions. Eventually by the early 1900's, each state and territory had their own 'Aussie Rules' competition.

You are from the Caribbean, so, depending on which part, you may have some cricket knowledge. If so Australian Rules football, the game that the AFL plays, was originally developed with the idea of giving cricket players something to do during the winter to keep in shape. Aussie Rules is therefore played, often, on cricket grounds, hence the huge size of the ovals in comparison with other football codes. The principal example of this is the MCG, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which is the premier Aussie Rules stadium. This is the ground where the Grand Final is played and more than 100,000 people turn up to watch.

Note: The original 8 teams that 'broke away' from the 'Victorian Football Association' at the end of the 1896 'Football Season' to form the 'Victorian Football League', did not all have the same 'mascots' that they have today. Note also that the city of Melbourne in 1896 had half of the population of the State of Victoria. Today it has nearly 80% of the population of Victoria.
The University team consisted of students and graduates from Melbourne University. Examinations, term holidays, a constant changing of the team and the entry of Australia into World War 1 along with an administration which do approve of the players being paid to play all contributed to its demise.
Note also 11 of teams competing in 1925 were all from Melbourne and its suburbs. Geelong (the 2nd largest city in Victoria) being the only team from outside of Melbourne.
Note: Australian Football is played on Cricket Ovals/Grounds. (Australian Football began in the late 1850s as a modification of the of rules of the football game played at the 'Rugby School' for boys in England. As the purpose was to have a sport to keep cricket players fit during the winter 'off-season' the were modified to lower the chance of injury to the players. For example 'hacking' (kicking the legs of opponents) was forbidden. The game developed rapidly and spread other States (Australia is a Federation of six States and two 'Territories'. Similar to the U.S.A.) In 1877 the Victorian and South Australian 'Football Associations' were formed. However as time went on Australian Football became the main football code in the states of Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania, while 'Rugby League' became the major football code on New South Wales and Queensland.
    Some AFL facts:
Australian Football is the ONLY code of football where the maximum score can ONLY be achieved by KICKING the ball.
The ball is in PLAY for 80 minutes in EVERY game of Australian Football. The ball is in play for around 11 minutes in each game of American Football.
Total attendances for the AFL 2023 season were 8,139,464 (Australia's population is 27 million.)
Total attendances for the NFL (National Rugby League) 2023 season was 4,335,876

"The Herald wrote in August 1858:[25]
The game of football promises, as it deserves to be, one of the popular amusements of the ingenuous youth of Victoria. Hitherto, a modification of the Rugby rules has been adopted, which, in the opinion of some, might be altered for the better. But as the cricketing season is so close at hand, it is, perhaps hardly worthwhile to discuss the matter seriously."
Note that 'Wikipedia' has taken to calling the game 'Australian rules Football', when NO senior body administering the game has NEVER used the word 'rules' in naming it.
Hope this was of interest to you.

You're barking up the wrong tree, Sammy.
The game played at the Rugby School was building a human pyramid up against a wall.
It didn't become a sport until someone added a ball.
Aussie Rules was the first codefied football game in the world, with codified rules.
The worlds first football COMPETITION started in Melbourne , Victoria, Australia in 1956.
The first Soccer competition started in 1957....when rules were first codefied for the girls game, that was previously used only as a warm up and time killer in Harriers and other sporting clubs.
Rugby the football code came later.

Whilst this video explains how the old VFL "morphed" into the AFL, it seems to give the impression that the WA and SA teams somehow miraculously appeared out of nowhere. From the late 19th century, there had been successful state based leagues running in WA, SA and Tasmania, parallel to the VFL. The VFL however, was bigger and had a higher profile, due to the fact that Victoria's population dwarfed those of WA, SA and Tas. NSW and Qld were not traditional Aussie Rules states and were more invested in the two rugby codes; more particularly Rugby League. Rugby Union tended to be viewed then (and still is), as a football code aligned to the elitist private school system. The foray by the VFL/AFL into the two northern states was seen as an imperative to grow the game nationally.

The video is a bit old. Tasmania will have a team (the Tasmanian Devils) playing mostly out of a new stadium in Hobart from 2027. This will make the AFL a 19 team competition, which is not ideal, since each week, one team will have a bye. It is likely that another team will join within a few years. Maybe Darwin? Canberra?
