I love it. Back in the old days of Radiohead, they'd just play a new song when they were excited about it... sometimes you wouldn't get it on a record for a decade or two later, but it was when the creative output was almost impossible to keep up with. I like that Thom is feeling that "write it today, play it tomorrow" spirit again.
This is honestly one of my favorite songs by The Smile already. Also, that moment at the end is so priceless. Thom tries to tell them to stop right as he finishes his last lyric but Tom and Jonny keep going.. so in the sort of blankness of "what's happening? I think I just said to stop right? This is fun. How long will they keep going?" Thom just keeps bouncing along, looking at them, and Jonny looking at Thom, and then Thom finally says "that's it." and laughs lol and Jonny kinda laughs as they finally stop! LOL I seriously laughed aloud! lol Such a priceless moment lol
I'm so freaking excited about The Smile. This isn't a mere side project. This is a full fledged band with loads of potential, especially considering how strong their debut album is.
I agree completely. The best parts of that record are as good as top-draw Radiohead. I mean I honestly think Skrting on the Surface might be the best way Thom and Jonny have ever ended an album, and there's some fierce competition. I absolutely love the direction they're going in too.
They played this song in the Roundhouse in Nov 2021.. it didnt have a name for it yet . I REMEMBER loving it so much... he asked the audience for suggestions on the name.. shall i call it balconies? Or friend of a friend???
Yeah if this was on the album it definately wouldve been my favorite. Havent gave the album enough time but so far theres only 3 or 4 songs I really like
What a tune! I saw this at Pitchfork in Chicago last Summer and thought it was one of the highlights of the evening, I think some people were labeling it People On Balconies in the live performances at the time that were uploaded and shared. The Smile looks much more of a home for Thom and Jonny than it did when they wanted to do something during Covid. I get the feeling Thom is enjoying writing and recording the songs and getting them out there pronto. Unlike the wait he would give to Radiohead tunes in order to get it perfect. Less cooks overlooking the pot I suppose. Oh, and I didn't mean to imply that they aren't doing these songs perfectly, but there is a new dynamic here that is giving these artists a second life as vital as that first. Can't wait until my next show which will be in March in Amsterdam.
He said that the song is called "Friend of a Friend" and referenced how in the UK, the rich people give all their "friends of a friend" all the money and then go "oh well I guess you'll have to starve" to the rest of the regular people
@@HQBacon Thank you 😊 I was talking about his very first sentence, when he introduced the band, because right after it I think he said something along the lines of « Nobody got my joke ».
@@HQBacon He’s referring to the covid scandal. There are numerous examples of the conservative govt suggesting friends make a grab for funds allocated to buy masks etc. And the more recent energy cost crisis which is a commercial carve up, supported by govt.
@@coolbubble He ask what that band before was? Referring to Radiohead and the fact their now doing their thing with The Smile. I think that's his joke anyway.
Seriously between The Smile LP 1 and what is shaping up as LP2, there is a whole album within LP1 and 2 that would rival Radiohead's best. Not sure about the two albums separately. THAT SAID I'd rather get two 8/10 albums totalling 25ish songs than one 10/10 album with half that so I am not complaining. The first LP was about 6 great songs, and 6 good ones. Second looks like it may be even better.
can't wait to hear this on a record in 12 years :')
Bet it's out next year douchebag. They just put out a full album. If they are working on new stuff on this tour expect a new album quite soon
DIAF
its on a record a year later!
You mean two months 😄
its out now 😊

I love how they just made this up the other day and they're not making us wait to hear it. They know full well how brilliant it is haha
These guys are on some next level creative shit. I love it

@@thomasmartin369 But isn't SOTS a Radiohead song, first played back in 2009?
@@treborretnim yes, although The Smile version is a lot better than the Radiohead versions.
Tom’s drumming on this - verses!!
Extraordinary beautiful tempo changes
Loving all these new unreleased tracks
Very Beatlesque
A blend of Lady Madonna and The Daily Mail.

That's a stange song, even by Radiohead standard
could be on In Rainbows Disk 2
This is different
So when are they releasing this song ?
January 26
Great! thanks for the heads up!@@user-iw3nd9ru7v
Just released it!
I thought that first line was Joe Newman!

What did u think of wall of eyes then? It was not that many tracks, and was fairly concise tbf
Shoulda turned up the bass
letztendlich doch in wien gespielt
Drums are great because it's Skinner, but they need to back off a bit.
