Underpaid yes. They should be able to live, without donations. Also, I think many other sports are waaaaaay OVERPAID. I understand that those sports are more popular to the public, and this is why I love the Olympics. It makes swimming visible. Out of the swimming world, people unfortunately don't know many pro-swimmers. If I ask my theater-friends they just say: "Isn't one called Michael something?". I think this says a lot on how under-broadcasted swimming is outside of the Olypmics.
But we as a swimming community can help. Make our sport more approachable. Share your passion with non-swimmers. Talk about your national athletes.

They are underpaid. That said, professional athletes are held to the popularity and revenue of their sport and no chance swimming makes anything near stuff like EPL, NBA, MLB etc

We as a swimmers need to promote the sport. Cause it's one of the best sports for your health and you can do it your whole life. Cause you rearely see a football or a basketball 45+ player on the feeld. And in my pool there a lot of people 45+. And it's very rare to gain a trauma in swimming unless you're a pro.

Nice of the United States to pay for a Toyota Camry if you win an Olympic gold medal. Well not the entire cost. About 70%. Why does a swimmer need a car anyway, you can’t even use it in a pool.

I don’t think they are underpaid. I want them to be paid millions for the years of hard work and dedication but that’s not how life works. They are paid what the market can support. Swimming is nowhere near as popular as basketball or tennis and most of the headline events aren’t even televised in most countries except the Olympics which happen once in a blue moon. The sport of swimming needs to grow and capture people’s hearts and minds and become something people want to do themselves or think about participating in and fantasise about themselves becoming a Ledecky, Dressel or Phelps. 46% of Americans report being afraid of deep water and it grows to 64% when talking open water. If you’re scared of going into deep water, how can you fantasise about one day being a Michael and buy the goggles Michael wears? Or his cap?
Humans aren’t water-orientated. Most don’t care about water sports. If this ever changes, then swimmers will be paid what they are worth

That’s a lie. Swimming definitely requires way more muscles and aerobic fitness. But the fast twitch response, strength, situational awareness and the amount of times they have to compete definitely does compare.

I think swimmers should be paid roughly ÂŁ500,000 a year I know this may be a bit too much but the risk they take and all the hard work they put in. Football is too much pay just for kicking a ball around? Stupid. I am actually only 10 and I go for a club in the U.K .
I started swimming when I was 3 so for 7 years and I have developed a lot.
My best stroke is F.C I could go up to 8 mph in that and my worst is breaststroke.
