There have been other cases very similar. Some involved kids much younger. Some had a sympathetic jury or DA. Had Jim Tan and his mom been upfront and had the mom not waited 4 days to call 9-11, he may have gotten off lightly. Jim was arrested two years later and convicted on a gun charge related to the incident. He got 20 years in prison.

For all we know, she could have been manipulating her son into wanting to defend her at any cost.

Well, Charlie Tan was sentenced to 20 yrs on weapons charges. He admitted to killing his father.
On Feb. 4, 2015 Tan wrote that his mother indicated the “next time” his father would kill her.
“I knew that in killing my father I would be throwing away my future, but I wasn’t thinking of that after the February 4 call"
"They [attorneys] advised me not to admit that I shot my father. They were the legal experts, and so I accepted that strategy, even though I knew what I had done was wrong.”
The mother is selfish and destroyed this young man's life. There are things you don't involve kids in, and this is one of them. She had the police and the domestic hotline for this.

I've seen several cases where they've killed their parents, not always due to pressure, but from a sense of entitlement to their parents' money, because they are failing and didn't want the parents to know because they couldn't live up to expectations, because they wanted to live their own lives.
I can think of about 4 or 5 cases off the top of my head.
The guy who murdered both parents in their home and just left their bodies in the house for years. No one suspected. Years later he and a friend removed the bodies. He told a gf. She said nothing to the police until he dumped her. The house has been resold I think but the cops found their blood under the floorboards.
In another case, a daughter hired some dudes or her boyfriend did to come into the house in a home invasion and kill her parents. She got caught because the dad lived and there were too many discrepancies. The dad overheard her talking to the home Invaders. That story has been told many times on true crime. Sure was actually on her 20's and could have just left home. She had been lying about being in college all along.
In another case, the kid murdered his parents blood was everywhere. Me just wanted the money. And the cops took him back in the home for a walk through, because supposedly it was another home invasion and they suspected him from day one.
In another case the girl wanted to date this guy that the parents didn't approve of so she and her boyfriend or just her alone, I can't remember the details, killed the parents.
Several other cases, I can't recall the details on. All of these cases have been featured on True Crime shows.

This case baffles me. So who shot the father? If Charlie, did not then why did he feel the need to cover up for his mother. She's obviously a domestic violence victim & the jury would have looked kindly on her. Charlier defence team should have showed evidence of years of physical abuse by his father towards his mother. It just seem so wrong that Charlie was eventually sentenced to 20yrs in jail in his re-trial.

Growing up under a physically abusive father is a nightmare. One day my mother ran into my room to escape from my dad and he turned on me because I stood in between them. At 18, I had had it with his utterly disruptive, destructive behavior. (He had resigned a good corporate job one decade earlier, turned jobless and was in the throes of all sorts of midlife crises.) I was mad, it had been a tough, tough day, and I hit back viciously.
He moved out after a week and when months later I travelled to the farm (to where he had moved) to attend my grandad's funeral, he called me aside and apologetic, said he'd told no one about the fight and added that he realized I was a man now.
He's 82 now, grand old man, ailing a bit. Presently at the family home in Nairobi. (The village is too tough for him staying there alone) I see him often.
