  • Starker teaching the Haydn Concerto in D, from a master class at Portland State University in 2006. The cellist was Una O'Riordan, and the pianist was Janet Coleman. Thanks to Mathias Donderer for enhancing the audio quality.

Brilliant advice and lots of it. His technique and posture are so good.

3:40 haha that look of disappointment lollll reminds me of this polish violinist teacher, who was related to my ukrainian cello teacher, who i worshipped growing up (even though im a cellist lol) and one time when i was like 14, my cello teacher had me perform piatti caprices and other impossible cello pieces - i failed my recital completely and this was the look on his face after the concert and he never came to my concerts ever again rip

I enjoyed your story. Yes, Starker had very high standards, and the class was at the end of eight hours of teaching over two days, so he was beginning to get tired. The cellist who played Haydn Concerto was excellent.

The cellist featured in the Haydn here is superb. She is a top pro who plays in a top orchestra. Yet even she has some issues with the notoriously difficult Haydn. The companion C major concerto is marginally easier in that the first movement is less difficult.

Do some actually hear what he is saying ? That would require subtitles - to me !!

Did anyone think to put a mike nearby? I had to turn the sound all the way up to make out what he was saying. Could they also have anticipated that the remote audience would prefer the interaction between Starker & the performer?

@@michaelrosa2015 to be fair this was held in 2006, CZcams was in its infancy and I doubt this was being recorded to be distributed for profit. We should be thankful for the little footage we have of this master.

That's my teacher, even through time she makes me feel inferior
