    A word of wisdom from an italian: not ALL italians are so keen on "helping each other"; italians love to help each other ONLY when they are part of the same "group", meaning each time a different thing: above all FAMILY (not only close family, but relatives at large and acquired family, like wives/husbands and their own family), then close friends, then colleagues (only if they're not rivals for your position), then MAYBE other people. Also, this kind of attitude is more present in (very) small cities and towns, where is more likely that people know each other, are friends with each other and/or relatives with each other. In big cities can be present in small communities: parishioners, immigrants communities, associations...
    But in Italy there can also be a lot of VERY LONG hostility between communities (Montagues and Capulets, anyone?): families, neighbours, supporters for one or the other soccer team, citizens of different cities can be at each other throats for YEARS or CENTURIES; sometimes hostility can align even INTO those communities: different branches of the same family, or specific members of the family who can't stand each other, different political parties in the same city, different visions in the same association. And those contrasts can be kept for a very long time, sometimes for all of your life and passed to your descendants. The idea of mediation between different positions is often seen like a betrayal, the concept of "respect for the adversary" virtually unknown.
    So, if you move to Italy, make sure to make as many friends as possible, build your own community with local people, that can be a real safety net.

      You are so right on all points and I have observed all of what you are talking about. This video was a brief one and focused only on positive aspects, since my goal is to share positive cultural information. However it’s true that it’s important also to see other sides of things. Thank you for watching the video and sharing your valuable comments!

    Great Video! Can you sum up how much taxes you pay as a self employed person? Greetings!

    • @cherylobalcrossculturalexpert
      @cherylobalcrossculturalexpert  Před rokem +2

      Hi K. Schmidt! Thanks for watching and glad you liked the video. It's not easy to sum up the tax situation in a comment like this, because it's very complex and depends on the amount of business expenses you deduct. Basically, with tax and INPS included, it's approximately 48% of your income, after deducting expenses. So as a simple model, if you have 40,000 in gross income, and you have 20,000 of expenses related to your business, you will pay 48% on 20,000, or 9,600. There are certain regimes that can help new business owners, like regime fofettario, in which you pay a flat tax of 5% on 78% of your income. You can’t deduct business-related expenses on this regime, and as of 2023, (they just changed it) you can earn up to 85,000 euros per year on this regime. So if you earn 40,000 on this regime, take 78% of that = 31,200 and you pay 5% of tax on that = 1,560. Keep in mind, that is just tax, and then you will pay an extra 4,000 + for INPS, per year. So approx, 5,560. But again, these are just general guidelines. It's always good to go to a qualified accountant and get a simulation done.

    We have been trying to purchase property remotely for about two years now.
    It is rare, extremely rare, for a realtor to return our emails. The ads are too often misleading. Is it a bare property? Is the kitchen included? What about all the old wooden furniture left behind? Will the cellar or tavern be emptied?
    The reluctance to give even some clues to where the property is located is silly. Property crime is higher on a per capita basis in the States and you will see dozens of photos and the exact location. The realtors in Tuscany are not customer service focused.
    A sale is a sale especially if you are paying cash and have done your HW.

      I agree that the process can be extremely frustrating and the practices of real estate agents in Italy may seem not as transparent as what we are used to. I can suggest contacting Stefania at La Corte Dei Miracoli.
