I don't think she'd continue forward to talk about his childhood as she does if Spock didn't give the go ahead. With the camera cut as it is, I could see it being either a head tilt of embarrassment or a nod, but I feel like a nod makes more sense story-wise.

Although the sehlat featured in "Yesteryear" was domesticated, the potentially harmful nature of sehlats in general is referenced in the episode's script. Writer D.C. Fontana explained, "My written description of a sehlat in the 'Yesteryear' script includes something to this effect: 'Make one wrong move, and a sehlat will rip your arm off. However, Vulcans don't make wrong moves. That would be illogical.'"

If anyone out there is interested in knowing what a sehlat looks like, they actually showed Spock's selhat in "Yesteryear" of the animated series, and then a wild sehlat in "Forge" of ST: Enterprise. They are HUGE! Imagine a cross between a saber-toothed tiger and a giant short-faced bear and you get a rough idea. And even the domestic ones are still somewhat aggressive. McCoy would probably have had a heart attack if he met Spock's "teddy bear" in real life. Vulcans have the most badass pets!

I admit I haven't seen all the TNG episodes, but did they ever have a moment like this? Did TNG have any characters that the audience felt genuine affection for as they did with the original series? Was there any writing in TNG that made use of subtext?

LoriCiani She told Spock she'd hate him forever if he didn't disregard Starfleet orders to avoid interplanetary war, so it's a little questionable as to how good of a mother she actually is.

Sarek conceived Michael and Sybok through a different mother, not Amanda. But, yeah! I’m defending a lousy, choppily put together timeline that was made up as the story writers went along. Makes about as much sense as Luke and Leia kissing each other before George Lucas decided to write them as brother and sister.

McCoy is a disrespectful dick. He tries to make Spock drop his mask all the time, similar to idiots who try to make a woman with whom I work remove her head scarf which is an integral part of her heritage. I am always irritated at the character because of this.
