    If you compare this to his other inaugural addresses, he looks and sounds much more exhausted. He carried the weight of the entire country on his shoulders for twelve years. It killed him.

    I feel so bad for FDR. He led us through the Great Depression and WWII and didn't get to live to see his accomplishments fully realized.

    By 1945 FDR was a physical wreck. He had only a few months to live. Indeed his health was secretly one of the reasons why it was decided to skip the normal inaugural pomp and circumstance. Yes, as others have noted, his 12 years in office had worn him down. But he was also a lifelong chain smoker (the equivalent of 3+ packs a day) which surely contributed to his death.

    2:35 is the key moment. That's the man who would be President for almost all of that 1945-1949 term,Truman not FDR. Sadly so, because had FDR lived, the world would have been very different for the next four decades. He was young by today's standards too, just 63, and looked like an old man.

    He actually grew the economy by 10% a year consistently and was the only president to do so. That is after adjusting for inflation. The economy grew more under FDR than it did under all the Republican presidents of the last century combined (48 years). Herbert Hoover made the depression longer than it had to be. We didn't bounce back in 1930, we didn't bounce back in 1931, and we didn't bounce back in 1932. Only when we changed our behavior

      You could not have been more wrong, FDR prolonged the depression and got the US in a second recession in 1937. Also ww2 did not fix the economy in terms of living standards.

It makes you doubt yourself and reminds you of Hitler's big lie quote where he described how telling huge blatant lies in propaganda was more effective than telling small white lies. In your moment of doubt you have to make the conscious decision to do the research and hard work or just give up, roll over and either forget or accept the blatant lie out of apathy.

    The greatest president this country has ever had. No other president could've gotten the nation through those dark times. And I get the feeling that he knew he had no other choice but to run over and over again until the duty was done, and victory and peace were achieved. If only he had lived a few months longer to see what he had done.....

      Where was Eleanor as in 1940 at the 1944 convention to again help Wallace keep the Vice Presidency. History would have been different. I presume that as a scientist, he would have not dropped the bomb, but would have invaded with the Russians. Note that Stalin would have captured and executed Hirohito like he did the Tzar in captivity in 1918.

      Although Roosevelt personally liked Wallace, the left-leaning VP had been very naïve in his views and actions toward Stalin and the Soviet Union and became somewhat of a security risk.
      Faced with that and coupled with FDR's frail health, the convention actively sought a replacement VP, knowing that person would likely ascend to the Presidency.

    Was sad to think he only had less than three months to live. He was one of the greatest. I believe only Washington and Lincoln were better, only because Washington was the father of our country and Lincoln had the task of putting it back together. He definitely looked ver pay weak and tired here. RIP, Mr, Roosevelt.

    soo as a non US person, can anybody tell me how FDR got a 4TH TERM!?!?!?!? i thought you only had the abilty to run for two terns max in the US. i've heard of being able to run for two extra terms if the vice presidents takes over the past presidents term for no longer than 2 years which sorta makes sense, BUT 4 TERMS HOW?

      FDR had remarkably successful two terms and was still only 57 years old in 1940, when we decisively won his third term. In 1944, the U.S. was deep into World War II and nation chose not to change leaders in wartime.

      FDR is actually the reason they made that rule (22nd amendment). Had FDR lived through that 4th term, the amendment probably wouldnt be in place today.

    Truman ate Dixon's Chili in Independence, Missouri. His favorite was a strange concoction without beans. How in bloody blazes doth a man eat chili sans beans? I shan't say it made Truman seem alien and untrustworthy, but tis what tis.

    This man carried the weight of an economic depression, world war, all on his back while being in a wheel chair and the struggle that has to be. Yes he made mistakes but overall probably of the greatest Presidents in American history and greatest world leaders in human history. Unfortunately his Economic Bill of Rights were never fully adopted.

    He may have lived longer and see the end of the war if he wasn't so power hungry. He broke the convention of not serving for more than 2 terms. They had to create a 22nd amendment just because of him.

      There was no limits back then tho and he set a precedent that an American president could run 4 times just as George Washington set a precedent but congress unjustifiably enacted the 22nd amendment despite putting no term limits in themselves

    FDR made the depression so much longer than it had to be. It was not until 1946 when we brought the troops home, cut fed spending by 60% and cut taxes by 30%. That was when the economy became prosperous again.

      Total nonsense. Look at GDP and unemployment charts from 33 to 45. The dip is 1937 was because he CUT investment in his new deal programs. When he re-invested in 1938, the economy continued the straight line growth.
      The Republican fairy tale that cutting taxes and spending lead to growth has been proven false over and over and over. It’s never worked, not once.
