Tarnished jewelry? Two ways to get it clean.

  • Have you ever had your fake jewelry tarnish? Of course you have. We all have.
What makes your jewelry tarnish is the reaction of the metal in, for example, jewelry chain to your skin. It is not pretty at all, but there is a way to clean your jewelry so that it is wearable again and you don't have to throw it away.
In this video I will show you two methods that I use for cleaning my jewelry.
I hope this will be of help to you while I keep investigating and experimenting with other ways to remove tarnish and clean both real and fake jewelry.
    All you need is:
    A bowl
    Aluminum foil (shiny side up)
    Table salt
    Baking soda
    Hot water
    Plastic spoon
    Ketchup
    Toothbrush
    Enjoy!

Mix two parts baking soda to one part water to make a paste, then gently rub the mixture onto the jewelry. Let the paste dry completely to remove the tarnish. Rinse and dry with a soft cloth or microfiber towel. You can also follow a similar method using cornstarch.

I’ve had the same problem that many of you mentioned with this cleaning solution, it turns the fake gold back to just plain copper. I have researched this topic extensively and I have found the best cleaning solution is just a few drops of dish soap in warm water and gently scrub with a toothbrush. That will clean it without removing the fake gold coating. However, I have found that best thing to do is to take preventative measures when you buy your costume jewelry. You just need to apply a lite coat of clear nail polish to your piece. Or you can use a clear coat spray paint. They also make coatings specifically for jewelry. As unfortunately, once your fake gold has turned, the only way to truly “restore” it is to use some kind of gold dip product, jewelry paint or spray paint. And of course once you’ve refinished your piece, you’ll want to seal it with the clear coat.

    After all that cleaning:
Let dry. Paint it lightly with a CLEAR coat of NAIL varnish..
    it will never stain again.
For rose gold etc, apply CLEAR pink nail varnish.
    This really works well.
Before wearing "fake" gold jewellery, ALWAYS paint it with clear NAIL varnish. It will keep it's lustre.

Perhaps for cheaper and less fine gold-plated items this may be a cheaper solution. But the general consensus is to use Renaissance Wax - this is what museums use to keep their antiques from tarnishing or even to 'lock in' a patina.

WOW… I have a BEAUTIFUL piece of Betsy Johnson costume jewelry that I absolutely LOVE. It’s a thick Cuban link chain with cute little enamel flowers and caterpillars, gem stone mushrooms, and little imitation pearls. Unfortunately, the chain has tarnished after only a couple of wears! Because I love the piece so much, I was hoping to keep it as an heirloom to give to my daughter. I was going to look into having it plated but after seeing this I’m going to try cleaning it. I also saw another video that showed how to spray the jewelry with a thin coat of polyurethane to protect it. Thank you!

They don’t look gold anymore, they look like copper. I’ve had that experience too. The gold color is gone and won’t come back. It has to be coated before wearing. Sometimes if the gold plating isn’t gone you can use an anti tarnish method like Tarn-x which only takes a couple of seconds. Then you have to coat it with a clear coat or it will happen again.

I saw a great tip on gold plated jewelry. Before you wear it pin it to a board amd spray clear coat onto each side of the pieces. It comes in a spray can at Walmart or Hone Depot etc. It protects it from perfumes, sweat and your bodies natural whatever that makes the pieces discolored.
I was hoping to find a different method then ketchup amd baking soda, salt and water. But if it works it works.

I've done that method before, to me (and just my opinion, I'm no expert) it's easier to just dip them into tarn-x with great results. But I've also ruined a few pieces too. Thankfully mine are all goodwill or other thrift store finds, I try to never pay more than about $8. tops, then I don't feel so bad about my mistake.

ALL types of Jewelry tarnishes, when u wear jewelry, ur body sweats and ur jewelry gets oxidized OR when u don't wear a piece of jewelry for a long time and it isn't kept in proper storage compartment, like its not kept in a box seperately over time it gets oxidized.
When jewelry is exposed to air it gets tarnished, yes many low quality plated jewelry tarnishes faster but theres a difference in:
"tarnished jewelry which usually refers to jewelry pieces getting oxidized"
"plating coming off which refers to when the metal plating comes off and reveals the copper aloy underneath it"
When the plating comes off then u can't clean it off because it isn't tarnished however if dirt and grime is on the jewelry then that can be cleaned off real metal jewelry also tarnished but if its real then the plating won't come off because it ISN'T PLATED

Personally I will put old vintage and new modern pieces with set rhinestone/glass in the ultrasonic cleaner........People tell me "That's crazy, the stones may fall out."......The way I look at it is that if a stone is going to fall out after 30 seconds in an ultrasonic cleaner chances are the stone would have fallen out in my customers hands shortly following selling it to them.....I don't want people getting screwed so I consider the Ultrasonic Cleaner as a litmus test of sorts....If stones fall out they were going to soon anyway, it helps me cull ouy stuff that needs to be fixed prior to it being resold.

That being said some things cannot go in an ultrasonic cleaner.....It will strip paint/acrylic off of metal.....It also isn't good for soft stones or wet/sensitive stones (opal, pearls, real turq) but for chains and stuff like that it works wonders. Silver tarnish sometimes requires the Aluminum Foil w/ Baking Soda in Hot Water trick, but for most stuff the "tarnish" isn't tarnish at all, it is disgusting sweat, perfume, dust, dirt, pus, skin all stuck to the chain. I refuse to sell jewelry until it is cleaned because used jewelry can be disgusting.
