  • The hardest thing about being a school custodian to me is, the schedule. learning how to work and clean with lots of people around. I have been a custodian for over 20 years. The purpose of this channel is to share some of my knowledge with you. I remember the feeling when I first became a custodian. I was given a set of keys, a radio and a badge. Didn't get any training whatsoever. Being a custodian is not rocket scientist knowledge. There are definitely things that a custodian needs to know. I call it the art of the trade. Tips and tricks that can make the job much easier and enjoyable. Find me at @mrjeffthecustodian

Thank you for this video. Started this year as a sub custodian in a WV county schools. There's an expression in WV. "Run 'er slow." There's an attitude behind it as well. Like you point out, the work will get done but life is real. Sometimes you need to do other stuff. Sometimes people are in the way. So, you skip it that day and go back the next. The work is still done but you're running it slow. The custodians I've worked with here have all told me, "go your own pace". It's reassuring to see that seems an industry wide thing.

Absolutely set your pace if you don’t it will overwhelm you. Control the job don’t let it control you.

We have to clean everything everyday. We have 3 floors and 4 custodians . Since covid we have 2 come at 630 and 2 at 830. And we are not to have down time! It is stressful. This video makes so much sense!

@@mrjeffthecustodian Exactly this. Before I retired I just did what I could because basically as long as you don't make any mistakes on security and stay at work the whole 8 hours, there is NOTHING the district can do to you.

Mr. Jeff. I have to say I truly love your videos. Since I've worked at 4 different School Districts here in the Milwaukee, WI area. Every District runs different. I finally have gotten into the management part of the custodian now. I do some paper pushing and on the floor cleaning. I'm working towards being the head custodian at my Elementary School. Well they actually the called Facility Foreman here. I'm currently the Assistant Facility Foreman which I work 2pm till 10:30pm shift. I take it at your district you clean classrooms during the day, which must be extremely difficult to do. All the districts here which I've worked for always cleaned the classrooms at night. Is this how all your schools run? Our Foreman has a small cleaning area. Councilor/main office. 2 small bathrooms and Phy ED Office. Then you have the lunch program which he takes care of. He works a 6am till 2:30pm shift. I normally help him clean he's cafe since I really can't clean classrooms until 4pm when the kids get dismissed at 3:35pm. It makes sense to clean stairwells when the kids are still in school. I have a part timer that I'm in charge of that cleans 12 classrooms and 2 bathrooms on the 3rd floor. I clean 2nd and 1st floor. Its very interesting how your district operates. Upper management wants me to train me to become a Facility Manager eventually. Keep making videos.

I love working during the day . Having a family at home I sure don’t want nights. Congrats on being upper management. I wish our system would let some of us. They think if you don’t have a degree you don’t qualify.

Hello, MR. Jeff, thank you for this information. I just started a new job with another county, and they want me to do all the restrooms, sweep, and dust all the hallways, and then they said I would have to buff strip wax etc all the hallways by my self and we get a 30 minute lunch and we don't get any breaks I'm so frustrated I'm ready to leave already and just started with this County on the 14 of November 2022 what should I do? I have been watching a lot of your videos learning from you.

Just started a new cleaning job. Used to work for a college for years, and had a really understanding boss. Was able to make my own schedule just like you. The new job is incredibly different. They're having me do an entire primary school by myself. 15 class rooms, 3 hall ways, gymnasium, and a cafeteria. They want all of these done nightly , and they're extremely picky on even the smallest mess.. doesn't seem to be working

Ok I’m my experience. Bathrooms and halls are 1st priority. So those have got to look good and smell good. So those are every night things regardless. I would suggest 5 class rooms one night and 5 the next night. Offices if there carpet vac once a week. I’m have and office build that has 26 office in it and 3 huge between office. These office have people in them 9 hours a day. I vacuum them once a week. Jim Bo your only human. I think some area don’t need as much attention as others. I have always felt some people think custodians are there to keep them happy. That your there just for them. Your there to do a job to the best of your ability but not to be driven to the point of it better be clean or else. I had a hall ones that had 26 rooms. I was told they had to be cleaned every day. I said not gonna happen. Unless that’s all you want cleaned. I also had 2 sets of bathrooms and offices. So they left me alone. I split class rooms up. I still had to clean 13 rooms a day firming school hours. I only had 15 min per room. Did that for 5 years. Like to have killed me. Any ways sometimes you have to set your boundaries. Your only one person.
