What Is Pagefile.sys? Can I Delete It?

  • ➡️ Pagefile.sys is the "paging file" that contains Windows' virtual memory. You can delete it -- if you understand the ramifications.
    Pagefile.sys is the Windows paging (or swap) file used to manage virtual memory. It’s used when a system is low on physical memory (RAM). Pagefile.sys can be removed, but it’s best to let Windows manage it for you.

    Not sure why I searched on the topic today, but I must say this was the only sane description of the Windows page file that I could easily find in a "last year" search.
    People should indeed leave it be unless they have a reason to try something and be prepared to own up to any consequences. ;-)
    And while one might delve more precisely in what Virtual Memory is to Windows, that's not important in the scheme of things.

    Hi, I was in the process of changing my drives around in my computer and I wanted to format the drives after I had copied them, but it would not allow me to format them because they where in use by another program, so I saw a CZcams that said just turn off your paging file and you will be able to format or delete it, and that worked but now I am running into other problem when I am trying to clone my drives so if I turn paging back on will it just fix up what I delete when I formatted those drives or have I mess it all up now. I have 64gb of ram. Thanks.

    What's the reason for it to absolutely need to be double my RAM so all of my RAM can be used? If I don't allow the pagefile to grow to that size, Windows could be complaining about running out of RAM while I still have 7.1/16 GB free. I never understood this behavior, and I've been using windows since 3.1 ...

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  Před 2 lety +1

      My sense si that it will help a little, but not a lot. If you're truly short on RAM there's really no alternative other than: do less, so you don't need as much, or add RAM. If you can't add RAM you're kinda stuck.

    Please just leave this option alone. don't mess with it.. it's really not worth it. Just make sure it's half of a memory that you have on your system. If you have 16 gig make it 8 gig and so own.

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  Před rokem +1

      You can bring it back by doing the reverse of whatever it is you did to get rid of it. Typically that means enabling the page file or swap file in the system settings. But having it crash randomly because you removed pagefile.sys typically means that you don't have enough ram in your system to run properly. I would investigate getting more ram.

    Like other people I also do not understand why the heck I need a pagefile… Not everyone, yes more then 90% of people will not need more then 16GB memory without the pagefile in the year 2021 for sure! You can’t compare the speed and latency of a ssd to the speed of DDR4 RAM. Let alone the harder wear of the ssd for nothing in this case. I would love to know if there is a difference in performance comparing the same system with and without a pagefile.
    In theory the System without a pagefile should be faster and snappier, but like we all know : microsoft's ways are unfathomable

    Two questions, Leo:
    1. What's the difference between PAGEFILE.SYS and SWAPFILE.SYS? I've noticed that both of these files exist(ed) in the root directory of my Windows system drive. Also, PAGEFILE.SYS was a great deal larger than SWAPFILE.SYS.
    2. I recently bought a new motherboard, CPU, GPU and RAM. I maxed out the MB RAM, (16GB in each of the 4 Dual-Channel slots), giving me a total of 64GB RAM. Shortly after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, I reconfigured the Virtual Memory settings to dispense with the use of a paging file, thinking that 64GB will be more than enough RAM for the foreseeable future. So far, (about 3 or 4 months, with Win 10 also updated to 21H1), the machine seems to be working OK. What is your opinion of this setup, and do you think it could be sustainable in the long term, (say 5 years from now)?

    • @nushankodikara
      @nushankodikara Před 3 lety

      Knowing Linux, swap is literally the paging file. Here in Windows the swapfile.sys is for new windows store apps as they says, literally it's a paging file for new windows apps ( universal apps )

    • @askleonotenboom
      @askleonotenboom  Před 3 lety

      I was afraid that someone would ask pagefile vesys swapfile :-). I don't have a clean answer on that yet. And yes, 64GB RAM seems plenty for even some above average use. (It's what I have.) But as always a) pagefile.sys doesn't hurt if you don't need it, and b) it really depends on how you use your computer, regardless.
