I liked that you talked about the stereotypes. All the black women characters being fat, the only obese character with the binge ed also being a black girl, only the white characters were anorexic, there were also no fat white characters. The tropes are soooo overdone. Statistically anorexia affects all races the same. So in a clinic, you'll see people from all kinds of backgrounds, not just 16yr old white girls.

  • @ela6084
    @ela6084 Před 2 lety +419

as someone’s who’s been in inpatient treatment for anorexia, this is wildly unrealistic. we were monitored 24/7. there was no opportunity to purge or exercise, you were never by ourself with nurses checking on you every hour. ellen’s discharge is also so unrealistic. you have to meet your target weight otherwise it’s a no. completely non negotiable.
haven’t watched this movie but i know enough about it. thanks for the analysis, i think you called out some things that need to be talked about.

I’ve had treatment experiences fairly similar to the house in the film actually (but the staff were more accountable) they were offered to people that were treatment resistant and had been unwell for many years or decades. We’d already been through conventional treatment more times than I can count, tried every therapy and medication going. Our families had burnt themselves out years ago and many of the patients stood a chance of never recovering. It was just about trying to increase our quality of life in the moment, trying to show people that there was more to their life than their illness

This film was so tone deaf despite trying to be woke.
Obviously it's unrealistic to make the characters all magically get better by the end but notice how they ALL GOT WORSE? But Netflix portrays it like it was for the better? Between mia hiding her purge bags, Megans miscarriage (for what the therapist NEVER GAVE HER THERAPY FOR), Luke permanently injuring himself and other side characters never getting over their food addictions. The whole house was scamming them of their time and money. The only time Ellen starts to recover a bit is when she gets away from the recovery center at the end. ARE THEY SELF AWARE OR NOT?

Eli was never taught how to cope or how to get better at all. The only teaching method was suck it up and be happy because its your choice to be happy. I guess they didn’t take people with depression who have chemical imbalances in their brain into consideration. Kind of hard to be happy when you psychically and mentally can’t.

I never realized how little everyone regards Ellens opinion's and every time she said no. I'd understand if they were trying to show that she wasn't in the right state of mind to make decisions for herself being so sick. But the whole message during therapy is about thinking for yourself, making your own path to recovery and taking responsibility or "growing a pair" as her therapist said. Yet every time Ellen tried to be independent she's shot down.
Doesn't want to sleep with a man she just met? She's a bad person.
She can't recover in a place that enables disordered eating, her fault she didn't get better.
Therapist discourages family confrontation and communication? Ellens fault for not having family connections.

I don't think I actually got halfway through the movie- the "therapy" was bs, the other housemates more like background one-liners and the dancer boy was so damn creepy I cringed away from the screen everytime he got close to Ellen. I actually feel bad for the actress, 'cause if I don't remember wrong she has had (still has?) an ed, (she talked about it in interviews, I think), and she had to memorise this bs script, probably revisiting some bad memories in the process.
I think all those cliches could have fared better if it was done intentionally, as in Ellen got closure and actually recieved helpful help (yes, the helpful distinction is needed) to actually start to get better, even in small steps, and realised what bs all that had been.
But no, instead we get Netflix acting like they're very "woke" and falling flat at being actually impactful.
then again, 13 y.o me would've loved this movie as "inspiration" as much as she loved the cliche ed books, so maybe we just aren't their target audience anymore ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯
(ty for the review, btw, it really saved me having to actually sit down for the movie just to sate my own curiosity since people still talk about this movie)

They do so little to portray any of the emotional, trauma based, or just non-superficial aspects and causes of EDs. There's that one conversation between Luke and Ellen, but the subject is never brought up again and just kind of pushed away as an unimportant side plot, when in reality that may have been a huge contributor to Ellen's ED that really should have been addressed. The whole film just came across like it was saying "Ellen literally never eats because that's all an ED is, but don't worry because all she needs is a boy to save her".
Not to mention that you don't see any of the characters get better throughout the entire course of the movie. Yes, recovery is a long and difficult process, but it seems like everyone only gets sicker because they don't ever do anything to challenge to their EDs. They all consistently use ED behaviours while actively in treatment, and nobody ever gives them any alternatives or ways to cope. All the major plot points were either pretty much irrelevant to EDs or wholly unnecessary, while all the things that should have gotten more focus (Ellen's SA, her dad, anybody's backstory, comorbid mental illnesses, etc) were completely brushed under the rug and forgotten about.

This movie was in no way realistic to what outpatient looks like. They did state that this was a “special outpatient program” and “extremely hard to get into” which was okay, but probably needed to be pointed out more due to people expecting this now to be what inpatient that’s not in a hospital to look like.
There were a few things I really did enjoy about the movie even if they weren’t 100% realistic. The “calorie Asperger’s” scene between the siblings was fairly accurate between two sisters, as jokes about the problem are very common.
They NAILED the representation of rich parent problems and divorced family life. Ellen’s humiliation attempt to “force change” is so accurate to people who don’t understand the problem.
The 80% of the jokes between the patients between each other were accurate, especially when it comes to helping hide each other’s self destructive behavior.
They also did a fairly good job of showing different people at different stages of an ED. Different EDs and different ED habits, younger, older, etc.
Pretty much every other part is wrong. The sexualization of the food is not accurate at all. Yes the joking at the restaurant is accurate between 2 ED patients, but everything else fell flat. Outside of a few jokes, the rest of the restaurant scene is terrible. Especially trying to make it a “date”. Yes, attempts at dating at any inpatient setting is a HUGE problem. But guess what, us nurses monitor that and put in rules/regulations to keep that from occurring.
The last 30 minutes after the unwanted sexual advancement and then immediately her going on this “spiritual awakening” with her mother was just no. Absolutely weird and not. And with the mom they tried to shoot it artistically to make up for it makes me even angrier.

I watched the movie with my family during Christmas dinner & at that time i was already suffering with my ED for about one & a half year. We were eating while watching the move & something abt it triggered the shit out of me.
Now that im more comfortable with my ED i watched it again & since i wasn’t just focusing on how triggered i felt by the way she handled her methods to lose weight & paid attention to the actual story & realized how wrong this whole movie actually is. Like why did they make Luke pressure her to sleep with him, as well as all the other sexual indications, like???
(Theres in general something really wrong with his character in the whole movie)
I really thought this would be a good movie about the journey of someone with an eating disorder, but instead it just triggered me more.

All of the characters are portrayed as stereotypically underweight. Why is no one talking about this?? Except the one binge eater of course. It’s really not that hard to throw a person in to represent atypical anorexia. This wasn’t awareness, it’s just pushing the emaciated stereotype that prevents people from getting help, because they don’t “look like” they have an ED

how is showing calorie counting, exercise, peoples bodies and whatnot glamorising? If there’s going to be a movie about eating disorders, you have to show what they’re like or what is the movie about? It’s not glamorising it’s just showing what people do and what they go through. it’s just what it is.
Also the ‘sexualisation’ of the exercise is not sexualising at all since people actually STRUGGLE to exercise when you’re at that point and him sexualising the chocolate is something that he just does to get her to eat it without sounding ‘gluttonous’ because that typical yummy description of food would make them disgusted.
Her spitting out the food is a very common behaviour in people with EDs and the grossness of it is kinda necessary to show the reality of EDs and how UNGLAMOROUS it is which u earlier claimed that the movie was glamorising EDs.

yeah i agree. this movie was actually realistic and showed how anorexic ppl behave and why they develop this disorder , instead of just trying to be the skinny girl for beauty standarts because this is the most stereotype for anorexic people. however, the main character was going through depression as well and she was so much like my friend.

I think the point of the bottle feeding scene is to show how uncapable as a mother Ellen's mom is, and how expecting help from the outside is fueled by constant denial of her actual situation. I mean the woman tries to help, but in the end she is overwhelmed by her own emotions, and the daughter has to take responsibility in order to make her mother feel better. The scene shows us how forced and awkward can be to expect holding and caring from someone so wounded as that woman, and in a way Ellen feels it to, but at the same time it helps her to get over the denial, and start accepting that she needs to grow up and start taking care of herself, because her parents are not going to do it, and even though it's very unfair, taking responsibility can give her the opportunity to live and find happiness, instead of waiting for someone to get her out of her state.
I have had an ed for about 6 years, so I can confirm many parts of the film were very triggering, but I didn't hate it so much, just the "romantic" sh*te, as the guy was really disgusting and it was contradictory to the "take responsibility and find happiness" whole message of the film. Like, that guy and the relationship they tried to portray really messed up a film that was not perfect, but at least had some potential.

This movie left me feeling so freaking angry that in order to calm myself doen I made up the rest of the story in my mind. That was the only way I could stop myself from projectile vomiting 😹
So the Mums find out what was really going on in the clinic - file a lawsuit, the clinic gets shut down, the therapist loses his title and goes bankrupt, potentially serving jail time for endangering minors. The Dad gets in a car crash. Luke gets a restraining order against him because he's a disgusting pr*dator and narcissistic lil sh*t. I would like him to meet his demise but realistically idk how unless he hurt someone else then got locked up for good. Or gets in a car crash. Then Eli gets better, happier and healthier. She finally has hope for the future, heals the wounds with her mums and sister, and rides off into the sunset living happily ever after. Poetic justice 👌🏻

As an anorexic person I only watch this film for thinspo tbh. Luke is creepy, the residential is soooo unrealistic and the doctors / therapists are all insensitive and all the men are on a pedestal; the main doctor, luke, even Ellen’s dad (through shitting on her mum and step mums ability to care for her).

  • @bee1715
    @bee1715 Před rokem +1

I completely agree. As someone who has and still does struggle with an ED (and a whole mess of other mental health problems!! 🙄)
I found this movie ridiculous. It romanticises and glamorises it. Lily Collins looks stunning as Ellen which is and was SUPPPPPPERRR triggering! Yes the actress is pretty but they made her the poster child of triggering.
There’s no real plot, character background on any of the characters so no real story, there’s a lot of contradictions and completely unrealistic incidents and mostly. Luke. Completely wasted and highly toxic character.
The bit that pissed me off the most was him pushing his feeling toward her onto HER “you’re my muse’youre my thing” bla bla.
That scene on the stairs “you’re my next thing” that is NOT romantic that is toxic af!!!!! People are not a “thing” Jesus. Mari whatever her name is writing sucks and it’s a completely stupid script. Awful. Toxic. Triggering. Unrealistic. The desert was pretty tho!

LOL love this review as a film buff with an eating disorder. My mom actually really likes To The Bone despite it not being true to any of my experiences at all. I mean fucking Starving In Suburbia was more accurate to my experiences than this, because at least it actually showed good representation of a boy with an eating disorder and how they can kill you. Its pro-ana site representation... not as good. The one thing I found accurate was that Ellen was enabled to get to as low of a weight as she did, her family didn't know how to deal with her ED. Also, if you didn't know - Lily Collins is Phil Collins' daughter! My mom was still trying to wrap her brain around that when I told her that. Also, I dislike Alex Sharp and much prefer Alex Lawther as a "compatible" actor. Also the calorie Asperger's joke doesn't make sense as someone with actual Asperger's. "Calorie OCD" would have made more sense, although no less insensitive.

I remember the theory saying that "the patient has to get to the bottom to get better". This is such bullshit. And then again, as in many ed treatments, it basiclly says "The patient wanted it to happen, he/she/they need to get better on her/his/their own. Let her/him/them deal with their shit." Or just "Grow up", "grow a pair", "eat". It makes ed patient looks mean, unwilling, with no desire to get better, when in fact, they're in pain too and may actually have been through a lot in their life. I can't stand the fact that ed patients are dehumanized in such ways and presented as the villain, meanwhile a lot of people are actually to blame.

What about the body doubles? You can clearly see the actress isn’t that skinny in many scenes. The body double stuff is just weird. She even says in interviews she “at times” wears prosthetics. Wondering if her body double got any credit to the film because that’s what most people want to watch it for. Thinspo…unfortunately.
But this was written off the writer or directors true story so much that was portrayed was based on events that happened. My only point you don’t mention. Kinda surprised you didn’t know that.
