  • Two cultures that have both been regarded as the sweetest, most artistic cultures of their geographies - why is it that we see a resemblance between them? In this video, we explore the parallels between French and Bengali culture in the context of the histories of Europe and India and do a deep dive into an interconnected tapestry of linguistics, history, geography, and absurdism!

As always, an absolutely beautiful and interesting video. We have been exploring the Bengali and Italian (specifically Neapolitan) connection (albeit with comedy) for a while now, and have found huge similarities as well. Many of the points you have captured in this video specifically that of art and culture are very valid for the Italian connection as well. The importance of tight family bonding and the respect that the mothers and grandmothers have in an Italian family also is a very strong similarity. We are currently working on a series on similar lines but the other way around “Italians are the Bengalis of Europe”, this is because Europe as a whole can be compared to India w.r.t the fact that cultures, traditions languages change every few hundred kilometers so a state in India can be correlated to a country in Europe. As ardent fans of India in Pixels, we’d go bonkers if you’d agree to collaborate with us and do a deep dive into the Bengali Italian connection as well. What say?

Khai na = tabe nai (食べない)
Jai na = ika nai (行かない)
Kichu na = nandemo nai (何でもない)
    3. Boka = Baka (バカ)
    4. School e jabi na? = Gakkou ni ika nai? (学校に行かない?)
Aksathe porbi na? = Isshoni benkyoshi nai? (一緒に便器好しない?)
Bhat khabi na? = Gohan o tabe nai? (ご飯を食べない?)

As a Bengali who learned French in school for 5 years, as much as I hated it for all the complexities and inconsistencies French had with its phonetics, I have to admit that I never realised or noticed until now that my own language had just as many phonetical irregularities and inconsistencies as French. Most likely because it's my mother tongue, and it all just comes out naturally for me (same would go for French people). So I just never noticed it, as a native speaker. However, those 5 years of learning French as a foreign language were absolute chaos.

Ashrish, well done on your video! It got me thinking deeply about Bengal's vibrant cultural tapestry. Particularly,of the late 18th-century influx of artists from France.
Imagine it as a pre-Instagram era, where portraits served as artistic souvenirs, carrying snapshots of life across continents. But these weren't just any artists. Think French portrait painters catering to British officials, their canvases more than just likenesses - they were threads woven into the very fabric of Kolkata and Bengal.
The brushstrokes of influence extended far beyond portraits, though. Landscape artists like the Daniells Uncle-Nephew duo captured India's breathtaking beauty, perhaps inspiring local eyes to see their own place anew. And even French hairstylists left their mark, their innovative techniques adding new threads to Kolkata's fashion tapestry.
This artistic migration wasn't just about canvases; it was like an artistic fingerprint pressed onto the city's DNA, influencing everything from hairstyles and cuisine to the very spirit of Kolkata. Thinking about it further, what struck me most was how this cross-cultural exchange transcended time.
Even in our age of digital snapshots, I see echoes of those artistic exchanges from long ago. Each photo we share connects us, just like those 18th-century portraits bridged continents. So, thank you, Ashrish, for prompting this journey of exploration.

As a french with Bangladeshi partner, I was so happy to see this video. You were very on point with french language and cultural references, maybe the only thing I do not agree is the video saying Paris is dirtier than New York city, since they grabbed the video during a strike of the garbage collectors where there was a lot of trash outside which usually are not.
I enjoyed learning more about Bengali culture and we also felt this conception of shared personality/cultures sometimes with my Bangladeshi partner as we really like to debate, especially about politics, and both know the importance to acknowledge our rights and fight for it if necessary. But maybe I think Bengali culture has more of a poetic touch than French, from what I understood there is a music culture (like people gathering and singing together) which is not so much common in France nowadays. We can sometimes be very direct and some people try to avoid being romantic or poetic.
I hope to visit both Bangladesh and India one day, and I will definitely want to see the places you shared in the video!!

a little correction for you Bangladeshis are not Bengali even ethnically they're Bangladeshi just like Germany because 99% of their people don't even speak Bengali they mainly use Urdu and Arabic with couple of Bengali words and that's not Bengali they just use Bengali script just like all European languages uses Latin script for their respective language you may question how we Indians know that Bangladeshis speak Urdu and Arabic with some distorted Bengali words because India is a multicultural multi lingual country every Indian can understand and speak at least 3 languages generally it becomes more than 3 now coming to the point Hindi and Urdu are very similar and close to each other you don't need to read and write if you can understand and speak one language between one of these two you can speak other 90% of it fluently without any problem and the way majority 99% Bangladeshis speaks with Urdu and Arabic words along with couple of distorted Bengali words no one will consider them as Bengali and most importantly Bangladeshis don't even follow Bengali culture even they don't have any contribution on the development of Bengali language by contributing on Bengali literature. What it was in the past when Bengal was undivided it is now in the pages of history books after partition of Bengal in1947 jump to now we are miles apart the separated part of Bengal now called as Banglades now have completely changed from every aspect whether its from culturally , Ethnically or linguistically because some other external factors causes this transformation on this landmass of separated Bengal/East-Pakistan

The center of civilization is naturally also the center of population. The most populous place on earth is the birthplace of human civilization. The Middle East and Africa cannot be seen as the Garden of Eden. They can only be deserts and deserts. The Garden of Eden can only be found in a country with many trees, rivers and a huge population. The center of the world is near Bangladesh and Myanmar. The Garden of Eden can only appear there. Other places are deserts and have nothing to do with the Garden of Eden.

I love learning about various cultures, traditions, languages, and people and I am so glad to have been recommended your channel. You always come up with such amazing topics that I feel tempted to watch your videos. Your content is eccentric and lastly, as a Bengali myself, I get to learn more about my mother tongue from you.
