- You Must Be Joking! is a 1986 South African film. It is Leon Schuster's first hidden camera film and Schuster's first feature film.
Produced in collaboration with Johan Scholtz and Elmo de Witt, it has become popular with South African audiences alike.
In a series of short skits, Leon Schuster uses candid camera and several disguises to stitch up the general public of South Africa. Such sketches include:
- The watermelon pulse test, where Leon shows that a watermelon is only ripe when it does not have a heartbeat, much to the confusion of the seller.
- Cooking on the bonnet of a car, while upsetting the traffic police.
- Supposedly killing a cow in a butcher's shop. - Hudba
So this was filmed in 1986, right? In South Africa? During apartheid?
But I see people of color with jobs, doing grocery shopping among whites, walking around town among whites, and not getting publicly lynched...
My boet, the commie anc has rewritten history and made the white man a demon when they are in fact. Dont believe everything you are taught. Race baiting is just one of their many evils.
There was definitely racism(not all white South Africans were racist) and some segregation, slightly comparable to the lockdown regulations of covid. Which made the covid lockdowns and passes ironic. But for the most part, Apartheid was nothing like segregation in the US, the church would not allow that kind of brutality. The goal was separate development and education, similar to native Americans in reservations. The mistake was that there was no real effort to uplift blacks into the middle class, segregation never works, and money spent on these projects were not enough. Furthermore, South Africa's economy was on a decline due to sanctions. South Africa would have been a better place today, if they focused on free market principles that would have helped blacks out of poverty into the middle class. The only silver lining was that blacks had blue collar jobs and apprenticeship jobs. All in all, both apartheid and the new South African government did blacks and everyone else a disservice. There were better solutions to both problems.
Please, i don't mean this in bad faith, I know the internet is polarized and often pugnacious, but I think it may be better to ask 50 year old, 60 year old black people as opposed to using Leon Schuster's film as a socio-political reflection...rather the people who were there. They might agree and suggest it was kinda like Covid...or not. My aunt, who against all my begging, still votes ANC because "I'll never understand"

I was born in 92 way after this movie came out. Today I'm 30 and married, my wife who is 28 gets so annoyed by the fact that I still breek me after all these years as if I'm watching it for the first time🤣🤣 now my boy aged 4 also laughs his butt off😅...sigh, Leon such 'n yster👌

The more I watch King Schuster, the more I’m convinced that he deserves 10 Oscars.

I'm surprised that the 80's in ZA was kind of diverse aside from the apartheid at the time. Blacks, Indians, Coloreds, having their daily strolls amongst the Whites, man! This really was ahead. Glad that EdW said OK to diversity with this one!
