  • Will, Dominic, and Veronica teach the harmonies for Happy Birthday in honor of Stephen's 5th birthday.
Will - Lead (starting pitch C)
Dominic - Tenor (starting pitch F)
Veronica - High Baritone (starting pitch A)
Stephen played an F on the pitch pipe, since we're singing in the key of F. Dominic's tenor began on F. Will used the starting F (do - 1st tone of scale) and descended to (sol - 5th tone of scale). Veronica used the starting F and ascended to A (3rd tone of scale).
Some thoughts about singing in other keys: All the parts in happy birthday ascend a full octave from their starting pitch, so it's important not to start to high for your singers. If you don't have a child singing or a female singer, Veronica's part could by sung an octave lower by a man. This way the melody would be in the middle with a harmony part above and below.
We also could have arranged so that Dominic sang the melody starting on F. In that instance, Veronica would have needed to sing the tenor part and Will the baritone part.
And if you don't have a pitch pipe, you should still be able to find a pitch that works for your group. Just experiment and make sure that everyone will be able to make that octave jump.
