  • In this video, we breakdown yesterday's CR Practice question. This detailed explanatory answer discusses GMAT Weaken the Argument Critical Reasoning practice question.
    Question:
A recent study published in a leading medical journal claimed that consuming moderate amounts of chocolate daily can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study followed 1,000 participants over a period of 5 years and found that those who consumed between 10 and 30 grams of chocolate daily had a 30% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those who consumed no chocolate or did so very rarely. The researchers concluded that the flavonoids present in chocolate may help improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, thereby lowering the risk of diabetes.
To question the credibility of the conclusion, it would be most helpful to establish that
    A. the participants who consumed no chocolate had a healthier lifestyle at the beginning of the 5-year period than those who consumed chocolates very rarely or daily.
    B. the flavonoids found in chocolate are also present in other foods that were not considered in the study.
    C. the study was funded by a major chocolate manufacturer, potentially introducing bias into the research.
    D. the participants who consumed moderate amounts of chocolate daily were more likely to engage in regular physical activity, which also boosts glucose metabolism, than those who consumed no chocolate.
    E. the participants of the study were required to self-report the amount of chocolate that they consumed daily.

In option B, you said that other foods could also be responsible for lower risk but doesnt matter because chocolate is contributing. So in D, physical activity is contributing to lower risk. But that does not necessarily say chocolates are not contributing to lower risk
