I'd like to add to that: treat every situation as a real one, even if it's children who come up to you. I'm sure you guys do, but I learned the hard way as a child, that not everyone does. I was 9 when we saw a 2 year old disappear in what we knew was a very deep spot in our lake. The only one who believed us, where our mothers, who both we're not great swimmers. It took ages for them to convince someone to dive for him. In the end it was his own mother who found him, about 4m deep. He survived severly disabled. My parents then had myself and my siblings join the volunteers and WE all spend countless hours at the lake. I Always drilled the new volunteers to Take everyone seriously, even if there we're many children trying to prank us. 99 might, the next one may have seen someone drown like we did that day.
We used to go to Nags Head, NC here in the States. That water is rough and the rip tides are not to be believed. We NEVER let our kids go in the water above their waists until they were older and stronger swimmers. We also kept them in life jackets. I understand that "things happen" but sometimes they happen because parents aren't diligent in keeping an eye on their children. The lifeguards are there for emergencies NOT as babysitters.
Every international flight coming in to Australia should be required to show a warning about the dangers of swimming in the ocean in Australia. So many tourists just don’t understand how dangerous it is.
Absolutely! I lifeguard in Hawai'i and wish there was something because so many people underestimate the ocean here
There was supposed to be a video on the Qantas international flights about beach safety and water safety for Australia. My dad was the one who had the contract to create these videos, and they were finished and completed fully ready to be aired during landing. But a few weeks before they would due to start playing, Qantas cancelled everything saying it was too expensive. Which is typical Australian companies, they would rather keep their money instead of ensuring safety of others. This is a born and raise Australian, who still currently lives in Australia.

I don’t understand ppl that get in the water that don’t know how to swim. This is what I assume happened. So sad that they aren’t educated.
Can’t believe how these guys consistently get to people at practically supernatural speeds. The fact that anyone walks away from drowning without severe brain damage is a testament to their incredible skill and dedication.
I used to work in childcare in my hometown, which was in central Florida. Despite the fact that we were surrounded by bodies of water in every neighborhood - lakes, creeks, rivers, home pools, you name it - and despite how common it was for families to spend a Saturday at the huge beach only a 45 minute drive away, I regularly had to gently convince parents to get their babies into infant survival swimming lessons. I had to reason with them that we live around a LOT of water, and even if you don't think your baby could get into water without supervision, you just never know. Babies can drown in literal toilets just from getting curious and trying to lift themselves into it. Infant survival swimming lessons don't even take that much time - it's like 15-20 minutes a day each morning, 5 days a week, for 6-8 weeks depending on where they're getting the lessons. It doesn't cost much. I told parents that since the lessons are only 15-20 minutes per session for infants, they could easily just go to the swimming lesson place closeby to our school, then drop them off at school before going to work and still make it to their office by 9.
Obviously a 6 month old can't truly "swim," but these lessons teach them how to roll over onto their back in the water rather than remaining face-first, and move their arms & legs to stay afloat and wade. An infant can't maintain that for very long but it will buy them a minute or two of time in event of an emergency. It takes so little time each day and is relatively cheap. But still I had parents tell me they didn't want to do infant swimming lessons because they were afraid their child might drown...during one-on-one sessions with a certified trainer in the pool with their baby and them standing poolside. It baffled me that people were more scared of their infant taking swim lessons with certified instructors than they were scared of their child wandering into a body of water and drowning. I'll never understand it.
I agree with everything! I will add that back floating probably won’t do a bit of good on a beach with waves, however!
@@gigahorse1475Agreed! No child in single digit ages should be swimming in the ocean without an adult hand physically on them at all times. Your nine year old being a really strong swimmer in a house pool doesn't equate to the ocean.

So unbelievable that both baby & Dad did not die! What a rescue group these lifeguards are! True heros, because remember they are going into the same rip tides that are trying to drown the people that they are trying to save. What dedication!

Those talking about how the parents should watch her, her father was with her or trying to get to her, he almost drowned himself. They probably got pulled into a current.
The father probably could not swim himself. Two years ago, in the U.K. I was on a pretty much deserted part of a beach swimming out to a bouy and back. As I swam in an Indian family were entering the water, the father asked me how deep it was where I was swimming to, I told him I don’t know, but probably 10 meters I swam back out, and in again, I noticed he was in trouble bobbing his head out of the water, I got to him and pulled him out, he had basically walked out and there was a sudden steeper drop he fell into. I checked he was OK, then I asked him if he could actually swim, he said no, his family including young children were up to their shoulder in the sea and none of them could swim. I did advise them that they should not be in the water really above their ankles if they cant swim, they were grateful and listened, they had never been to beach before.
who swims far enough out into the ocean to be caught by a rip with a two year old?
They were probably on the sandbank and it just dropped. It happens a lot. People go into the water where they can stand and don't realise that it's not a gradual decline@@GappyHigashikata8

It’s hard to describe how intense doing real mouth to mouth resuscitation is on a person who isn’t breathing when you’re the only one near them. The fear and anxiety is high. I’m happy Noah recovered, my elderly patient did also. It’s something I’ll never forget.
I bet the kid was in his arms and he got swept up and she was gone.

Why make a judgmental comment before watching the video? It’s crazy 20 people liked that. The dad almost drowned himself, and the mom was watching them. Things can go bad so quick in the water. Tourists can be especially ignorant of the water.
The father almost drowned himself. He was most likely with the child but got pulled away. Y'all underestimate the power of riptides.

As someone who lifeguarded for 3 years in high school, the amount of parents that treated us lifeguards like babysitters and would not watch their kids and chat with other parents or sit on their phones was infuriating. The amount of parents who knew their kids couldn't swim without a life jacket that let their kids loose in our pools and then NOT watch them was astounding. I have had to pull in countless toddlers from drowning because of parents negligence. PLEASE stay WITH your child and WATCH them. If you know they can't swim/float, my god give them a flotation device before you let them get in the pool. Beaches are (obviously) even more dangerous and it is impertinent your child's safety goes above all else.

You have to be very vigilant when it comes to watching you child/children, as u can take your eye's off of them for a second and they are gone, this video made me so emotional I'm sitting here typing with tears in my eye's, so u bondi rescuers please keep doing what your doing GL&HR (GOOD LUCK & HAPPY RESCUING) coming from Dulwich London England(✌peace✌)

As a kiwi, I guarantee they went in where it looked flat and calm - so many tourists do, because they aren't used to real beaches. Unfortunately, the "calm" water is where the rips are, and they drag people out so fast.

@@flamefangstarrips aren't rapids. Rips happen UNDER the water. I got swept in one in shallow water when I was little. Caused me to constantly get tossed and turned around in the water. Just as I was about to lose air, some random father spotted me, went into the water, and pulled me out. From just being in that battle with the rips for maybe 30 seconds - 2 minutes, I had been pulled to nearly the other side of the beach from where I had entered with my family. No one had noticed I was gone since we were only in knee to waist deep water for me.
They were so confused when I walked up to the ones on the beach with a random man saying he saved me from drowning. Yes, there were lifeguards on the beach, but none of them spotted me until AFTER the man had pulled me out because I was still in fairly shallow water. Just that the rips KEPT me under the water.
How the heck do you let a 2 year child that far out in the sea alone?? Blows my mind! If I had a 2 year old at the beach it would be in arms reach at ALL times!

I really wish there were big signs in each language approaching the beach - on ramps and things - that warn tourists to not swim or go past waist depth if they don't know how to swim , and that rips and currents are unpredictable and dangerous, that sandbanks are prevalent and not to dive into them in case of spinal damage : So many tourists that don't know how to swim treat the ocean like a big swimming pool - so unaware of basic safety precautions, and expect that lifeguards will always be able to save them. Lifeguards take their own lives in their hands each time they go out to rescue anyone, it's always unpredictable. There needs to be more prevalent signage, on buildings and ramps and lifeguard towers and especially warnings on tourist brochures and on google maps about any Australian beach, especially tourist hotspots, about beach safety and rules. It's always the most ignorant of the ocean, the most unaware that get in the worst predicaments. No 2 yr old should be taken anywhere but calm shallows - like ankle and knee depth at most. And even then they must be constantly held up in the water. My gosh these lifeguards did an amazing job- Mouse literally resuscitating her on the board. Well done. Gosh.
The WiFi is free at Bondi, so when people want to use it, a message pops up with warnings, in several different languages.
I completely agree. I don’t know what warnings are available but it should be available everywhere in languages like Korean. A lot of the tourists, especially non-English speakers, get themselves in big trouble because they underestimate the danger in the environment.

I would guess that the father knew he couldn’t swim well, but had to try to get to the child…. Heartbreaking. Glad it ended up ok.
If you are a visitor to our beautiful country, please do not enter the water unless you are a competent swimmer. By this I mean be able to swim the length of a 50m pool easily and tread water when you are out of your depth. If you can't, the beach is not for you.
The calm water is the death zone. The broken white water is safer because it sshallower, but never swim outside the red and yellow flags. You do not want to have to attend a Coroners Inquest and Police investigation if you lose a family member. That could take weeks and you cannot leave the country until thats happened.
People need to realize Australian waters aren't the Caribbean. They're actively trying to pull you into the ocean, just at different degrees of strength.
I scream at them when I notice them leave their kids roam unattended...and unfortunately they never listen.😢

I’m seriously starting to wonder if Asian tourists even know what drowning is. The amount of tourists who are terrible swimmers or literally cant swim at all who just go happily into the ocean is mind boggling.
