I developed the ability to play songs by ear pretty early on in my guitar studies. My advice is to do what I did: put on the radio (these days, it could be a streaming playlist) and try to play along with every song. Try to figure out the chord progressions, the riffs, and the melodies. Even if you can only pick out one or two notes at first, you will improve quickly.

I remember falling in love with an album "Bumblefoot - Barefoot the acoustic EP", and wanting to learn all the songs on that, but there weren't any chords or tabs online. So I just picked the first song on the album and gave it the college try : youtube with 0.5 speed, play the first second over and over and over until I get the chord right, write it down, and keep going. First song took a week to figure out, the last one took about 45 minutes. That's pretty much how I learned ear training - I had a basis of basic music theory going in, and I figured out how the chords worked together, how they relate to the scale and melody, etc. Took me one month to learn the record, never looked back

You used the word "magical" about learning about music. I was told to move my lips and never make a noise as a child. I tried to learn to sing at University but the teacher asked me if it wasn't too late to be reimbursed for the tuition. It was. She apologized, but the harm was done. I told everyone I had been born with two left ears. And I started playing piano at 65 yoa last year, like my Mum.

This was awesome. I started learning guitar in 2019 and ear training was one of those things I've neglected. One thing I've started doing is pick a key, then spend 5 minutes on a chord progression singing the chord names, singing a improvised melody, singing the degree. When practicing arpeggios and scales, sing those as well. I wish I would have done that from the get go. I know what I have to do & I know the amount of time to get my ear that good is probably greater than the many hours I've spent learning guitar. With that, would it make sense for me to get a keyboard, even a small one to work on ear training while say watching some hockey or baseball? Don't need the sound on for those. Also having a small keyboard on my desk during the day I could just fire it up when I hear a song to try and figure out. Thanks Levi!

When I was learning guitar, I had a really hard time finding a teacher who taught me music theory and how to apply it on the guitar. Most of them went straight to some exercise and I could not agree with that method. I strongly believe that learning music theory, learning where the notes are, the scales, etc. really helps you to be a better musician. You need to understand what you're playing, if you do that, technique, speed and everything else becomes much, much easier.
Frank is fantastic btw. Relative pitch aside, his ability to arrange the song in his head in a matter of seconds is incredible. His playing is also beautiful.

I went too far down the ear training path to go back and learn reading notes despite trying, I just couldn't give up the fluidity I had to go back and focus on starting over slow reading of complex rhythms from notes on a page. Having a piano teacher mother and hearing music played from birth, I quickly gravitated to plunking around on the piano by ear before any training. Then when finally taking lessons from mom, I would quickly recognize the melody and stop reading when playing it and simply playing from ear/memory!
Then taking up guitar I quickly started doing the same thing there, picking notes out and getting strong relative pitch developed to the point that I dug in deep in smooth jazz and was learning George Benson Breezin' tunes by ear. I got relative ear good enough to handle tons of melodies and would set a goal to try and play as close to them (predicting where they might go next) on the first play of a new CD.
I can now hear up to fairly busy melodies and play them "air guitar", simply moving my fingers on imaginary strings to match the melody, regardless of what strings I'm "using", but usually among those on the top 3 or 4 strings of a guitar.
I peaked at being able to play through some key changes on smooth jazz songs I fell in love with and then writing my own melodies and counter melodies playing over the top of the music.
    Frank is the best though.

I've been watching a TON of Frank, Marcus, and The Doo these past few weeks, and they've gotten me through a hell of a chapter of life, but I'm now on the other side. I was inspired to get back to playing keyboard more (life-long player, casually, by ear primarily), and this video came up automatically after one of Frank's. The information provided here, from the difference between perfect pitch and relative pitch (I believe I have the latter!), the advice to play in all 12 keys, etc, is just infinitely valuable to where I am as a player. I played clarinet for 5 years in school (hated it, was constantly back at the xylophone, guess why!), so I have some rusty music theory in me, and I have played by ear so long I can play most basic melodies on many keys (not all 12, will work on this!). Really eager to pinpoint what I should be working on, but this video is certainly giving me food for thought.

If you’re a guitarist, get Levi’s latest book ‘Guided Practice for Intermediates’. You will be playing all over the neck in every key, making it far easier to play by ear with different shapes.
He’s no BS, tho. It takes practice.

I really want to become a musician and have a good ear, but I haven't been able to get to the point where I can see any marked progression in my skill I've been floundering endlessly with nothing I can latch onto and grind my way up. I can absolutely recall songs in my head, and tell when it's right or wrong, but no ability to reproduce the tunes I recall... Work ethic is not my issue but I have no frame of reference to grow my skill, I have the entire catalog of CZcams videos on the subject committed to memory, I'm just too dull to find the jumping of point to start the climb
