Good takes. I'm quite surprised at how awful the takes of most other CCs has been. As someone who enjoys a good story, of course I want different cultures in an fantasy world to be varied, deep and complex with lots of lore. A nation of island dwellers could for example have webbed hands and feet. Or another nation such a nation who signed a pact with the local dragon residing within the nearby volcano, giving all of them strange draconic markings over their body. Mihoyo however doesn't need to really do anything, why change and improve your games when your consumer base will gladly consume whatever excrement you expel from your rectum.

1: im not an expert but from what i recall from an actual japanese historian who specializes in the period of time yasuke was alive; Yasuke was definitely not just a retainer, and was mostly given that title purely because it would've been difficult to convince the japanese government to be chill with someone who wasnt japanese having a significantly more honored title. 2: Tori gates is fair but at the same time most people do not give a single fuck about that and only complain about yasuke. 3: It's not really based off of a headcannon and i have my doubts that all or even most of the past characters were true to any real history they had to an extent that would be treated equally if pointed out lastly, the rap part is fair. the best i could say is that its an adaptation of historical fiction following a black man geared towards a modern western audience and i have my doubts that the implication of the theme is that yasuke was an avid rap enjoyer
Disney altered their star wars marketing for Chyna by practically erasing John Boyega's skin tone in the posters. Chyna has a massive problem with darker skin tones and it bleeds over into their art, media, and entertainment. I argue representation is important especially when they said THEMSELVES that they'll reference the culture yet they put everything BUT the skin color or only really make ONE black character. When there's other characters that's also supposed to be black but they either make them white or tan at best. And the argument that black characters doesn't sell is false, ppl don't play black characters in Hoyo games since they be good and they either get nerfed or they make them shit on purpose. And honestly u know it's pretty bad when even the VAs for your game is speaking out, CCs that been collabed with Hoyo are speaking out. It's just the spotlight is all on Hoyo yet they're not speaking out when all it is, is a simple fix imo yet they refuse to address the issue but address other issues instantly plus EN, JP, CN AND KR are all asking for the same thing collectively. As a Chinese player, I want to address a practical issue: China and Japan are miHoYo's largest markets, and dark-skinned characters are not particularly popular in Asia, especially in China. Naturally, miHoYo wouldn't include purely dark-skinned characters in the game. In our cn player community's perspective, those skin tone matter players as a group of people who complain a lot despite contributing little financially. If you have the capability to make the United States miHoYo's largest market, then miHoYo would certainly change their approach, and every subsequent Natlan character would be dark-skinned. Not verymuch you can chose, quit the game or accept it. Otherwise, complaining is useless.

Except big difference is that assassin creed is using the setting Japan, using historical events with historical characters of said place. Then add in traits that didn’t exist like gay romance option. These are generally real people from that era. What more funny is Japan is mad as hell for that. Good example of using Japanese culture but fictional. Is ghost of Tsushima. Japan was extremely happy with what they did and advise them to use fictional characters. If Genshin offended those people then those that country can speak up like Japan official did. But we haven’t seen that have we.

Also another sad thing is that I've been seeing a lot of commenters saying that they are Latino or dark skinned and don't care about this drama. I think it's fine if you don't care, regardless of your skin color but that doesn't invalidate the criticism being given by other people! I'm myself a brown skinned guy (maybe a little on the lighter side) because I'm Indian and Sumeru for me was really cool because of all the references they had but the skin color didn't represent me or my people totally because we have lighter skinned people but more than half of us are darker. Representation really does feel good to the less represented people or anyone regardless of if you are a minority or not. If a game doesn't have lighter skin tones or totally ignores the existence of white people, it will lose potential revenue but when it's the opposite no one cares. My favourite characters as of now in Genshin are all very much white but I like them because of their personality. Now just imagine if a character like Dehya (who is really cool lore wise) was fun to play at all.

I just enjoy whatever people make. If genshin devs want's to make a primarily white skinned game I do not care. If another dev team creates a diverse cast, I do not care. If a third dev team creates a primarily black cast. I do not care. I just want the devs too cook whatever they want to cook, and I just choose between the dishes various teams have created based on the ones I like the most. White, black, or in the middle characters doesn't matter for me, as long as they are well designed and well written characters I am happy.

As someone who enjoys a good story, of course I want different cultures in an fantasy world to be varied, deep and complex with lots of lore.
A nation of island dwellers could for example have webbed hands and feet. Or another nation such a nation who signed a pact with the local dragon residing within the nearby volcano, giving all of them strange draconic markings over their body.
Mihoyo however doesn't need to really do anything, why change and improve your games when your consumer base will gladly consume whatever excrement you expel from your rectum.

1: im not an expert but from what i recall from an actual japanese historian who specializes in the period of time yasuke was alive; Yasuke was definitely not just a retainer, and was mostly given that title purely because it would've been difficult to convince the japanese government to be chill with someone who wasnt japanese having a significantly more honored title.
2: Tori gates is fair but at the same time most people do not give a single fuck about that and only complain about yasuke.

I argue representation is important especially when they said THEMSELVES that they'll reference the culture yet they put everything BUT the skin color or only really make ONE black character. As a Chinese player, I want to address a practical issue: China and Japan are miHoYo's largest markets, and dark-skinned characters are not particularly popular in Asia, especially in China. Naturally, miHoYo wouldn't include purely dark-skinned characters in the game. In our cn player community's perspective, those skin tone matter players as a group of people who complain a lot despite contributing little financially. If you have the capability to make the United States miHoYo's largest market, then miHoYo would certainly change their approach, and every subsequent Natlan character would be dark-skinned. Not verymuch you can chose, quit the game or accept it. Otherwise, complaining is useless.

If we talk about assassin's creed it is somehow had alot of infamous context, Genshin made a fame for about 3 years and still winning, and the more Hoyo releases new game, the larger the community gets.
We can ignore the fact that this is a game only so idfc or ydfc whether they whitewashed characters whatsoever. It might be your opinion or my opinion, even we share same thoughts, but outside it is a taboo.
Like I mentioned, Hoyo community became large. It won't be problem if only if Genshin Region doesn't use other country/continent as reference. Even if they never announced it, we cannot say Inazuma ain't Japan, Shogunate ain't from Japanese. Liyue is Chinese, they even show clips of the Luhua pool in real life. It is clear that Hoyo is referencing countries and that cannot be ignore.
But here is the thing, why they did that? Because Chinese and Japanese are biggest coomers (I am a Japanese) that made Hoyo market large in many platform, Global is just addition, releasing character that causes cultural taboo will affect Hoyo market.

Except big difference is that assassin creed is using the setting Japan, using historical events with historical characters of said place. Then add in traits that didn’t exist like gay romance option. These are generally real people from that era.

Also another sad thing is that I've been seeing a lot of commenters saying that they are Latino or dark skinned and don't care about this drama. I think it's fine if you don't care, regardless of your skin color but that doesn't invalidate the criticism being given by other people! I'm myself a brown skinned guy (maybe a little on the lighter side) because I'm Indian and Sumeru for me was really cool because of all the references they had but the skin color didn't represent me or my people totally because we have lighter skinned people but more than half of us are darker. Representation really does feel good to the less represented people or anyone regardless of if you are a minority or not. If a game doesn't have lighter skin tones or totally ignores the existence of white people, it will lose potential revenue but when it's the opposite no one cares. My favourite characters as of now in Genshin are all very much white but I like them because of their personality. Now just imagine if a character like Dehya (who is really cool lore wise) was fun to play at all.

when i call genshin trash i dont mean the game itself but the ppl who make pr and monetary decisions.. to me.. playing while not paying or promoting is like playing a pirated game.. now ppl can call me hypocrite.. but afaik if im not paying and just playing doesn't give them any money.. infact im just a freeloader on their server maintenance... i take long breaks, play piled up content within week, pull new character, play it for week or two then take break again.. and in logical mannor.. why should i even stop playing when i invested 2 years of grinding and lil money i spent on game.. and im still having fun with it.. when i dont i take breaks..

I just enjoy whatever people make. If genshin devs want's to make a primarily white skinned game I do not care. If another dev team creates a diverse cast, I do not care. If a third dev team creates a primarily black cast. I do not care. I just want the devs too cook whatever they want to cook, and I just choose between the dishes various teams have created based on the ones I like the most. White, black, or in the middle characters doesn't matter for me, as long as they are well designed and well written characters I am happy.
