Excellent presentation! Thank you so much for this concise approach to this technique! Very well explained and answered so many questions!

Clearest explanation of this that 've seen. Thank you! I'd misunderstood the "diagonal attack" bit as being angling the hair, rather than the stick (as in when you play quietly). Might also save some hair!

Another excellent video, Lauren! Thanks for the recommendations. Getting reacquainted with violin and learning fiddle techniques instead of just the classical music I grew up on is keeping it fun and interesting this time around! 😊💜👍🏽103

Thank you for these clear explanations. Do you have samples to show the chop in action ?

i like your background. it gives this funky cool hippy Sun Ra vibe.
these last lessons have been invaluable to me because I wanna be the Johnny Ramone of fiddle.

    May I suggest...
When showing different fiddle techniques like 'chop' or 'strum bowing', that you include a tune, or part of a tune, or even just a riff, without the technique and then the same tune/riff with the technique. Would help to hear them in context. Thanks.

Hey Joe, thanks for your comment! I did this with my video on flicks & turns, but the thing about strum bowing & the chop is they are accompanying techniques, so typically not played as part of the main melody of a tune. Hope that make sense! I’d definitely recommend checking out one of the musicians I mentioned in this video if you’re looking to hear variations of these techniques layered over a melody!

This is incredibly fun! Thank you so much 🙏 I’m having issues with my kick offs. I can play the tunes well but when I do the kick off I can’t keep my bow from bouncing and it’s getting frustrating. I would greatly appreciate some tips on how to properly do kickoffs. ❤️thanks for your awesome videos!

Don’t forget about Casey Driessen!! 😮🎻😆 If you’re not familiar, search his for his gondola video. He chops and sings like none other. Enjoy!
