    Hazelnuts: someone I know leaves a five-gallon bucket out near the tree, and the squirrels put them in the bucket to save them. he then swaps them at some point, putting corn in the bucket instead. You could probably do the same using acorns or whatever you have that they can still use in the winter

      How is the bucket positioned?

    • @acresofloveliness
      @acresofloveliness Před 2 lety +4

      @@KayElayempea good question! I never thought about it, so I never asked. Now that you mention it, i would think somehow at an angle, so the squirrels can get in, but the nuts won't spill out...or maybe upright but held in place by being surrounded by small logs.

      @@ozarkman1478 I can attest to the fact that a 12" speaker box with a 1 inch diameter hole will be absolutely stuffed full of acorns. I didn't remember it falling off my cart full of junk to go to the dump, but I saw it a month later off to the side and scooped it up. On discovering that it was chock full of acorns, I cracked it open and left it with the acorns visible. Sure enough, the squirrel came back and cleaned out every single acorn! So, I am going to go with the idea that it trading corn and/or protein pellets would probably work.

      I think the use of some containers with smallish openings is totally worth a try. (not a tall tale :-) I am a wildlife biologist and one of my early research projects was studying chipmunk behaviour in Quebec. There are a number of squirrel species that practice a behaviour called "scatter hoarding". So if they find a particularly rich source of food and are competing with others to collect and store the food, they will store it or even bury it nearby because they lose too much time bringing it to their preferred winter cache and would not get as much food in the long run. The caveat is that they may eventually come back at their leisure and start moving the food. Another example are red squirrels which often store in nearby caches in my area of the Laurentians. I once had the entire engine area of my infrequently used car, completely stuffed with cones off the Norwegian Spruce that line my property.

    Hazelnuts- my friends have the same problem with their trees and squirrels, even to the point where they pick them early just before they are ripe and then let them ripen inside. Or you can section off the lower portions and surround those branches with netting to keep the squirrels out (if they don’t chew the netting!), and then they have access to All the upper limbs that are hard to reach for you.

This is what happened to me; Imagine planting up your garden for the summer with approximately 30 variety's of different crops and the tomatoes and capsicum were now setting fruit and it was all protected behind a 1.8m high shade / wind cloth fence. Now imagine going to check on your plants only to find that most of the plants had now been eaten off to the ground by rabbits which had burrowed under the fence. I was not amused! You have a great garden by the way.

    First of all, ditto what @RobHuffstedtler said about James' presentation of what I'm sure we were all expecting to be disastrous news, and him treating it like a tiny footnote rather than the primary textual content. I want whatever Kool-Aid you're drinking, so I can have that attitude, too, next time I have a sucky day!
    But my actual favorite thing about this vid is how lovingly you let oh-so adorable Tuck not only participate in taste-testing the garden yields, but also accept that he's probably more interested in the acquisition of a new toy to bury, and that it's all good. Be still my heart. Long live Tuck!
    I just discovered your channel today, James, since I've been exploring garden vids related to wood chips recently, and you showed up in my sidebar. I was instantly hooked, and I am now a subscriber, and I look forward to watching more vids! ~Karen 😊

    I don't think there's anything you can do for this year's Hazelnut harvest, but at the end of the season, definitely prune the tree back hard, throw netting over it, and hang bits of Irish Spring soap on the netting. Pretty much ALL critters hate the smell of it. The rest of your food forest looks wonderful though and I'm glad you're so successful with it!

    Every time a tomatoe would start to ripen , it would disappear.
    I finally realized that the house was surrounded by apartments and people could look down and see my lovely tomatoes.
    When I figured it out I yanked them out and ripened the last ones in a box. Pissed me off !

      Best way to handle that is to use human feces for fertilizer. The harvest will be a right off but people will learn real quick not to take your food when they bite in to taht foul tasting fruit. Best part is becuase its private property they cabt do anything about it either as you are allowed tonuse whatever you want for fertilizer and in order for tjem to even try to take legal action they have to admit to steeling from you. In which case you simply tell the attending officers you would like to file charges for theft. Also invest in a cctv camera.or other form of security camera so you can present video proof of them stealing from you to the courts. Happened to a friend of mine and he got fucking paid.

      Feeding the apartment folks a few fresh produce is a very small price to pay for treating property in their neighborhood like your personal cash grab. One of my life’s goals is to put tables out front with produce I’ve grown with a “free” sign, feeding people is a gift and a bridge to community.
      Mutual aid comes back to you in ways you can never imagine. Try to Enjoy the idea of a child who can’t have a garden biting into a freshly grown fruit.

    Sorry to hear about the hazelnuts. I am not growing any nut trees in my yard, but I do have a few suggestions.
    1. How do you feel about a hard prune? Right now, the trees are so tall that they can't really be protected. If you can cut them back and maintain the trees at about 8 feet of height, you can use one of the Plant Jackets from Agfabric to protect your nut trees. I use them to protect my avocado tree that I'm growing in Zone 8a, and they work well for winter protection. Squirrels may tear through the plant jacket, so you may want to throw bird netting on top of the plant jacket.
    2. You can try placing bird seed feeders all over your garden. While squirrels are amazing acrobats, they're lazy. If you provide them an easier source of high calorie, nutrient dense seeds, they may leave your nuts alone.
    3. If you plant future nut trees, I suggest looking into growing them as espalier low cordons. Birds and squirrels do not feel safe in fruit trees that are low to the ground, because it leaves them exposed to predators. The reason why squirrels love your hazelnut trees is they are so tall that they feel safe being up so high.
    Anything you can do to lower those trees and provide the squirrels a "distraction source" of food can go a long way to protect them, but it would take a pretty big commitment to cutting them back so hard.

    • @pushpanjalichowdhary4580
      @pushpanjalichowdhary4580 Před 2 lety +2

      Well, these are not options. I have tried this. My "Thailand Apple" trees are pretty small in height but squirrels do not leave a single fruit intact.
      Also even if u put seeds at various places, then also these creatures eat all fresh fruits and n damage the flowering!!
      They have so sharp teeth that they damage net cover n even if tiny uncovered space remains at root of plant, they climb from there, eat the fruits covered with net n then climb down.
      Birds, parrots, squirrels, insects are gigantic problem with virtually no solution!!

      Once someone cut olive trees in his farm and put walnuts instead. But the farm was in a valley full of olive trees, literally everywhere was olive tree. And you can gues whats happens to the only area with different fruit trees. Wild animals ripe all walnut, everytime.... I never seen something like that... Maybe you should gerilla plant some hazelnuts in the public areas, so they will visit your garden less. I bet they also know your hazelnuts are good, thus plant the trees same kind as yours around your garden, into parks or forests. Then they will have other options to go.

    • @OfftoShambala

      @@eg1984BLK Interesting… I was just watching a vid about a permaculture guy who planted walnuts in a ‘public space’ across the street from his house. He didn’t say that was why he did it, but I wonder if that’s part of the reason.

    • @IrisAzalea
      @IrisAzalea Před 2 lety +3

      Unfortunately those options don't for squirrels. There's plenty of nut trees and bird feeders in the houses around me and still squirrels destroyed my tomatoes. They chewed through bird netting and Irish spring soap and all other sprays only keeps them off for a day. I'm trying trapping and relocating them now. I hope that works.
