Actually, people CAN indeed argue that Adam Sandler, Chris Farley and David Spade were anything other than awesome on SNL -- in Season 20, anyway. Overall? Great. Sure. Especially Farley. But Season 20, when Farley, Sandler and Spade took over as the big stars, was a disaster. Janeane Garofalo and Chris Elliott were great hires (as was Mark McKinney midseason), but Janeane was so miserable that she left midway through the season.

While I have heard Norm McDonald also tell the story of his firing being similar to whats in this video, I tend to believe it had more to do with his style of comedy than jabs at O.J.. He made those jabs up until his last day as 'Weekend Update' host and then was still on the show for several weeks after that. In fact, Colin Quin, who took over for Norm on 'WU', made several O.J. jokes as well and remained on the show and was even given a 'WU' intro to do small amounts of stand up jokes. I think the real reason he was fired was simply because he was viewed as "not funny" unless he was doing imitations of Bob Dole. Of course, Norm was hilarious and they knew they made a mistake and apologized by having him host years later. But the O.J. excuse was overblown in my opinion.

By end of 1979-1980 season Lorne Michaels was going to stop doing the show and quit or take it somewhere else.
