Comparing Javerts in One Day More (Les Misérables)

  • (I was both very bored and) I frequently found myself comparing the different versions of Javert's melody from One Day More, so I figured it would be simpler to make a video comparing some of the more high-quality versions, as well as some of my favourites. I've noticed differences between the timing of "nip it in", "we'll be ready/I will join", the pause between "schoolboys" and "they", in addition to other differences, as well as differences in orchestrations and plain singing.
I didn't include many alternate versions as many of them are the same or much worse in quality. For example, Carpenter has a few high-quality videos, but they sound mostly the same as the 25th Anniversary recording, so they weren't worth including.
Below are all of the videos linked to the source that I obtained them from.

The mysterious Javert from the 1991 (not 1988) Royal Variety Performance is John Diedrich. The voice sounds different because the Australia Day concert was recorded outdoor, while the 1991 Royal Variety Performance was in a concert hall, so it affects the voice. The timbre is basically the same, and the mannerism is unmistakable.
Voice recorded outdoor would have less overtone and “ring” than recorded indoor, because, well, it’s outdoor.

Different does not equate a bad performance (though that may just be my own bias talking - his Javert was the first I ever saw and therefore I have a lot of love for his performance).

I never quite understood all the hate that Crowe gets for this performance. Yes, his "One Day More" isn't quite as good as the other actors who have played the role, but it's just a different interpretation of the song with different lyrical annunciation that only sounds strange due to being a deviation from the norm. It's not like he's singing out of tune like some people like to accuse him of, and personally i think his rendition of "The Confrontation" ranks among the best.

John Diedrich was very good. He was Philip Quast’s replacement after PQ’s first stint as Javert. I saw JD perform twice. Once, at the outdoor concert shown here with an estimated audience of 125,000, and later in the full stage version.
But PQ was Javert, and still is. I saw him in concert a few weeks ago (March 23). ‘Stars’ was wonderful, as was ‘Lily’s Eyes’.

Philip Quast is the absolute best Javert I have ever seen. The next best, not far behind, was Simon Redhead, in a 2017 Newcastle Australia amateur production. No other Javerts I have seen on stage, or on screen, have come anywhere close to these two men.

I really like Crowe acting, except in Les Miz. I think he was a casting big mistake. He ain’t got the voice nor his acting is nowhere near the rest of the cast in the movie. I think he was not comfortable with the role as he was aware his voice was far weaker that anyone else
