  • My thoughts on a cold steel machete that is based on the historical roman gladius and can be used as a 'last-ditch' home defence tool.

    I agree with your review. I bought a katana, it was a beautiful sword but I also realize that it was too long to be use inside the house just in case it was needed for seld defense. So I oreder a cold steel gladius for the same reasons you mentioned. Cheers!

    I own it and it is a very nice sword for a proper amount of price. Once a guy came up to me with a baseball bat,trying to injure me. I drawed the Gladius and said come on bro. He turned on the point and ran away. If you practice a little (there are some nice roman sword fighting videos here on YT) it is after a firearm pure gold of choice.

    I gave one to my brother, one night he heard his small dog in distress in the back yard. Being in California taking a gun to investigate was extremely problematic so he took his gladius and was confronted by 4 large racoons trying to make a meal of his dog. The two of the raccoons charged him, he swung at the first and stabbed at the second because it was so close and he could not recover from his swing. All he could remember was the color pink where the sword had laid the first animal open, the second ran into his home through the side door and was found in a pool of blood in the guest bathroom.
    He was able to recover his dog mostly unharmed.

    If a blade is all you can use, this one is hard to beat. Literally. It was designed and proven in extremely dense combat with little to no room to swing a sword. So, the Romans adopted, then adapted the gladius to be primarily a thrusting weapon. They knew that a slashing motion is both exhausting and very often inaccurate in battle, as well as dangerous to ones' own troops. A slashing motion must be recovered, leaving the swordsman open. The Romans fought in disciplined linear units, close together, making the thrust the best option. It is accurate, lightning quick, and deadly. A sword thrust can be delivered many times against the opponent who is slashing.
    So, in a hallway, a small room, a doorway, with no gun? I say the gladius is a great option.

      @@ashleighwilson2583 So, two guys broke into my apartment, I heard them jimmy my front door open. Was saving for a firearm at the time so all I had was this machete and the cold steel buckler. I walked down my stairs as they made it into my kitchen and one had a baseball bat the other had some kind of off brand K-Bar. The guy on the left caught the edge of my buckler right under his nose and the other came at me with the knife, I sidestepped and slashed down with my sword taking his arm off at the elbow. So yeah, it’s pretty damn effective lol also sidenote the guy who caught the buckler in the face, I broke his nose and knocked most of his teeth out so I can recommend their buckler as well lol

    For home defense - consider Cold Steel Spetsnaz shovel. It’s near perfect for CQC. You don’t need much room at all to swing it and can use the flat side vs edge, if it’s not necessary to deliver a fatal blow. I personally considered various swords and large knives for home defense and decided against the idea. It would just be too gruesome and bloody of an affair. I believe most people don’t realize how grotesquely violent it would get, It may be also with this shovel, but at least it would still be just a small spade shovel, when the law shows up. It would pass for a garden tool and a weapon of opportunity. My other alternatives are a good old D cell Maglite and one of those Cold Steel propylene baseball bats. Really, all 3 of the above possess one-hit stopping power and would be more “digestible” to law-enforcement and God forbid a jury of your peers :/

    Pretty sure that Gladius will straight slaughter a home intruder DEAD.
    Quick thrust or two leaving 3 inch wide 14 inch deep wound channel in the torso/chest = DEAD.
    Horizontal thrust punctures between ribs leaving MASSIVE lacerations to lungs, heart, arteries, kidneys, liver = MASSIVE hemorrhaging and death FAST.
    Also, any thrust that slips through the ribs or comes in and up under the rib cage through the belly has a good chance (if centered) to severe the spinal cord due to deep penetration causing INSTANTANEOUS collapse and incapacitation of the target.
    Low quick thrusts to thighs = severed femoral artery, severed muscles/tendons/ligaments causing instant collapse and falling to ground followed by finishing thrust to chest.
    Quick upward thrusts to armpit/underside of upper arm severs arteries and near total severed shoulder or TOTAL severed bicep or tricep.
    Overhead downward or straight thrust to neck = DEAD in SECONDS from severed Carotid artery and INSTANTANEOUS collapse if severed spinal cord in the neck.
    This weapon for home defense is an all business, no bullshit killing instrument. If you are the intruder and the homeowner strikes with the element of surprise, forget it, GAME OVER.
    Look at what a 1 inch wide deep arrow wound does to an animal. Now imagine a Gladius impaling an intruder with a 3 inch wide 14 inch deep wound channel:

    It's a decent choice but if you afford a little more there are advantages to a cutlass/hanger/short saber. The hand protection is invaluable and it looks better in court to have a faithful replica of a historical weapon as a "display piece" that happens to come to hand...

    I have this machete/sword and I like it. It is a fun beater blade for the money. When I showed it to my friend he laughed and said it was a lawnmower blade with a handle on it. I thought that was a little harsh at first, but giving it a few moments of thought I realized it wasn't too far from the truth. Yes, it can be used as a home defense weapon, but it doesn't have the cutting power of a proper sword, because of blade thickness, edge geometry etc. It's main value as a defense weapon lies in it's visuals. It looks very intimidating. If you would have to use it as a weapon it can still do the job, but it won't be as quick and easy as with a proper sword. It simply doesn't have the "stopping power" of a sword that is designed strictly for combat. But it doesn't have to be a bad thing. If you strike at your opponent with this blade it is very likely that he will start bleeding from one or multiple cut wounds and be thinking of getting the fuck out of your home, instead of you immediately cutting off his entire arm and leave him bleeding out on your living room floor. The tip bent immediately when I tried it on hard surfaces like wood, thick old books, etc. I took off the bent part and resharpened the tip. It is a little stronger now. I also resharpened the entire edge. The Gladius machete comes with a courtesy edge that is paper cutting sharp, but not the best. That is to be expected from a cheap machete like this. Not a big deal. All in all, a fun little beater blade but I wouldn't stake my life on it. But it's better than nothing, if you don't have any other options available.

      Any reason this is less lethal than a real gladius?

    • @mikaaalto3135
      @mikaaalto3135 Před 3 lety

      @@realtalk4real243 A real Gladius has a thicker blade, better edge geometry and a stronger tip. The tip on the Cold Steel Gladius machete is sharpened to a needle-point that looks impressive, but is quite weak. It bent immediately when I tried to thrust with it. Not very good for a weapon that is meant first and foremost for stabbing. I removed the bent part with a file and resharpened the tip. It is a bit thicker and stronger now, but still. The Gladius machete was paper cutting sharp out of the box and it worked well on wood. However, when I tried to cut water-filled plastic bottles with it, it simply wouldn't cut. It sent the bottles flying through the air when I hit them. A machete is a cheap tool made out of flat stamped metal that is meant for hacking and chopping through vegetation. A sword is made for cutting and slicing through flesh and bone. Machete wounds can look really horrific but are often survivable, while sword wounds are generally much more fatal or at least much more crippling and debilitating. I'm not saying don't buy a Cold Steel Gladius machete. It is a fun beater blade that is very affordable. I'm just saying know what you are buying. Yes, you can kill with a machete, obviously, but it isn't as good for killing or maiming people as a proper sword. Killing with a machete takes more work and will tire you out more quickly, whereas a sword can do the job much quicker and easier. I hope this answered your question.

    I also use a cold steel as home defense(live in the US)..the gladius is outdated my friend, the saber is the last iteration Man took on the edge weapon, curved=more blade in a smaller package..in terms of training the double edge is more dangerous to the user n takes more training overall..might i suggest another the 'cold steel cutlass machete' take care

    • @OutnBacker
      @OutnBacker Před 3 lety +1

      Gladius requires almost no training, is far more adept, swift, and agile in a tight spot, and is the perfect edged weapon for home defense where swing room is limited. The saber can stab well, but was designed for a long sweeping arc from a distance of at least 5 to 8ft - preferably from the fast moving horse. Accurately slashing with a saber or even a straight broad sword in a real fight take practice, is very fatiguing if the contest goes long, and often results in glancing flat strikes, rather than wounding cuts. In Europe, there are quite a few fencing and swordsmanship schools that have proven that the short stabbing swords modeled after the gladius are superior in matches where opponents have limited space, such as might be found in a home hall way or a doorway.
      An even better weapon would be a short pole arm, with a long straight or long oval stabbing /cutting head on it. The shaft being no longer that 5 ft. Think about the Zulu Assegai. Assagais were not thrown, but used exactly like the Roman gladius - in close combat. One could easily out reach an opponent in a narrow hall with such a weapon.

      @scaredofghosts6813 Před 3 lety

      @@OutnBacker a double edge weapon requires more training than a single edge weapon(for obvious reasons)
      The gladius is short/thick, a light sabre longer/thin, both weighing roughly equal, so how does one tire more/less with the same weight.
      The gladius excels at thrust but falls short on slashing,
      A sabre does both.
      The single sided curve also fits more blade in a smaller package
      also there are short sabres such as the cutlass.
