That is of course the great Wayne Shorter on tenor sax. Wayne is still alive, performing and making albums at the ripe young age of 87. Long life to one of my all time favorites.

Yes, and he and the great Steve Gadd on drums are soloing together on Aja. Amazing and powerful.

This album is on my top 10 of all time. The musicians on the album are some of the best.Chuck Rainey-bass,Bernard Purdie and Steve Gadd-Drums,Larry Carlton-Guitar and Joe Sample-Keys come to mind. The full listing is on Wikipedia. The quality of the recording was so good that this album was frequently used to demonstrate audio equipment. There is not a bad song on this album. Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were the founders of this group who used mostly Studio musicians on their recordings. They were perfectionists in every way and sometimes did many takes with different musicians before they we're happy with the final product. An earlier album ,The Royal scam ,is also a good one. Their catalog is huge with many excellent recordings.

It's all in the mixing. Steely Dan has the best mixing of each individual instruments and vocal blending ever besides the fact that they make great songs.

Mind Blowing production is right young man! Those Steely Dan albums are famous for their detailed production. This song is a modern masterpiece of music. Glad you listened to this. Anyone who likes production must listen to these albums. Man I dig your channel! Rock and Soul from the 70s is my wheelhouse. Hope you get into some Blues at a later date. Peace!

These guys where so perfection oriented some of the songs have hundreds of takes most destroyed by purpose not to leak out
They often had entire day recording sessions to achieve what they considered is the perfect take

    Pretty god-like tune.
I’ve probably heard this song at least 500 times, and I’m STILL finding more to unwrap in it. The sheer musical ambition and risk taking involved in composing and then releasing something of this magnitude and brilliance.....especially after their previous album “The Royal Scam” was so amazing, it took some serious belief and cahones to put it out, but they totally pulled it off!
    🎸🎼❤️😎

Meanwhile you should try Earth wind and fire sun goddess and anything else by Earth wind and fire you haven't gotten into much of their band tracks. They have some dope band tracks with very little vocals to it you might want to try those out too.

One of the greatest albums ever recorded, a once in a musical lifetime MASTERPIECE.
Every album before and after is compared to this album in production, engineering and musicianship and sophistication.

Bro, You're missing half the production listening through earbuds. Even something like BEATS aren't much better. You need reference headphones like pro's mix with. You can get a standard set for a lot cheaper than you might think. AKG K240's are made in China now. They've come down from $300.00 to $99.00 or less. They've been used in recording studios for a long time. You'll hear things you never knew were in the music.

Not a single song on this album that isn't virtually perfect. Check out "Deacon Blues," "Josey," and "I Got the News." Also, the prior (Royal Scam) and subsequent (Gaucho) Steely Dan albums are incredible, with great composition, musicianship, and production quality. This music all came out in the 70s, and it was phenomenal.

The song is about ex- President Richard Nixon being invited back to China (Aja ) after his resignation in disgrace ( "when all my dime dancing is through I run to you") due to the Watergate scandal. The Chinese govt. treated him like royalty. Like he was still President. "The hill' is Capitol Hill.
The drummer is Steve Gadd. He has played on hundreds of recordings. He said this is his best drumming ever. The drum solo is regarded by drummers as one of the greatest ever. At 5:52 he taps his drums sticks. I never noticed until a drummer pointed it out. And I've had the album since '77.
