There's some really interesting, totally different alternate or demo takes of Michael getting into his full and complete improvisational zone! It is SO fun to hear him freely doing what he does.
Often times, the mixes we end up with (although pure gold in their own right) tend to hide the humanity and free spirit that Michael displays in the alternate versions and takes we get to hear here. Enjoy with me!

I feel this song is more funk with a rock guitar... I don't hear the R&B in it..? Chris Liepe R&B is more sadder toned music? like Mary J Blidge songs about hardships, which MJ did sing about, but all his music was really positive/uplifting..

YES! First time I ever listened to the record they were instantly my two favourite tracks, and I cannot understand why they aren't more popular among his hits.
Thriller ( the single) when it heats up in the 2nd half is really amazing with all the vocal harmonies and horns overlaid. Always rock out to that.

Michael Jackson’s multitrack is very valuable for producers too. It teaches us that you don’t need 100 tracks to make a great production.

I don't know about on THRILLER however on BAD is obvious mj tinkered with the final songs over years so there are innumerable layers evident.

The guitar brilliance of Paul Jackson Jr.... A name that does Not get the appreciation that he's Earned and deserves! So many timeless and iconic records he's done. Hearing these isolated parts is amazing. No copy and paste, no snapping to the grid cause your time is bad. No sir, you had to Play!
I'm a fan of Paul JACKSON JR . His numerous contributions to pop records and his core of jazz licks he's one of the outstanding guitar players of the 80s

That vocal part "Anywhere you want to go" was sung by James Ingram & Howard Hewett (from Shalamar). They are credited as background singers on the album.
And James wrote this song

Ingram also co-wrote the song. No doubt, Michael took some of Ingram's signature vocal stylings(hooOOoo-hooo...) from the demo and made it his own.

Breaking down this instrumental really shows how funky and skilled the playing is, and how impressively naturally it gels together in the full mix.
I first heard this song when a friend of mine was getting out of a cab on Valentine Ave in the Bronx.
She opened the door and I was like “wtf is that?”
It played from 119 (in logic) till the end.
I was frozen. She was talking to me and although her mouth moved I didn’t hear a word she said.
It was 3 in the morning and the streets were silent.
I listened till the end because the cab got caught at the light.
The next day I asked her what the song was and she said “that’s the Thriller album silly.”
(I hadn’t heard the album. This is before PYT was a single.)
I copped the album the next day and heard the whole song and was blown away.
I played it about 40 times in my Walkman and knew every sound and how to sing it (mouth it) by the end of the day.
Sooo many tickly ear candy sounds on that track. And funky as hell!
Great one . Great artist . Great human being. Michael Jackson was a living legend.
Hell, MJ is a legend period - living or dead. The most famous person in my lifetime. Imagine selling out 50 concerts in 3 hours from a guy who didn’t do a concert in over a decade…
If you listen closely, the bassline is derived from Bad Mama Jama by Carl Carlton...this was told to me by James Ingram, who was a Bass Player. He stated Quincy told them to go out in the streets, clubs, see what people hear and come back with hits.

The quarter notes play about the same in both songs.
And you know what, there's another song named "Done For Me" by Charlie Puth, that borrows heavily from this song's bassline too..

It's simply astounding how MJ manages to achieve such a high level of complexity and interest in his productions without being overbearing and chaotic. King of doing more with less. It's truly a conversation of words and melodies and percussion, that flows in and out of itself like a Moebius strip of frequency! I am eager to continue working on my own skills, as it would be a lifelong achievement to achieve at least part of what made MJ songs so special. I'm tearing up a little, writing this. I have been producing for 8 years and I am only just barely scratching the surface :')
I love this song as well because Michael had his sister Janet and another family member sing the part after him

It was his sisters Janet and La Toya Jackson who sang the background parts as the "pretty young things".
Love the vocals on this. What a vocalist. Any style and it was always perfect.

DAMN HE'S RIPPING THE FUCK OUTTA THAT VOCAL
Bruce used The Shure SM7 professional cardioid dynamic microphone for most all Michaels vocals for sure 100% on Thriller album. Quincy was the one saying "Yea you need some lovin" lol. They said Michael was sweating and dancing up a storm recording this track. This song was/is fun to listen to and extra fun to hear you break them down. I was always taken back to how Bruce micd intruments, vocals, drums, etc. Like as a kid and teen I thought pyt and Billie Jean drums were electronic drums. But he had them so clean and crisp. Even created a kind of circle blanket that covered the kick drum with a slit for the mic to go through for billie jean, so the mic was inside the blanket in between the kick drum. Bruce even used a bathtub one time to get a specific sound. The way he recorded in stereo with the mics. Sheesh. And the 2 most important rules Bruce always told students or starting engineers, producers is dont listen to your music too loud as to protect your ears, and NEVER record str8 to digital but analog first, then transfer to digital, because once you go digital you can never go to analag but if you record in analog you always have that option. Good job Chris, once again.

Haha I come from this school of playing, arranging, singing and songwriting. Michael is one of the many artist that recorded my songs. He recorded “ Carousel” on several later versions of Thriller.

Another great video! Thanks so much for posting these. They are really insightful not only for singers but from a production standpoint as well. The engineer, Bruce Swedien, was really big on capturing the first reflections of the room. I don't know how relevant that is to us now recording in less than ideal spaces, but it's interesting to hear how they kept the room noise. Also, the SM7 is an interesting choice. I am guessing it was chosen to tame the high end of Michael's voice and to accommodate his aggressive singing style. I have heard Michael used a Neumann U47 on ballads and I think a Telefunken on Earth Song.....

He didn't hate it otherwise it wouldn't have appeared on the album.😄 But I do think he was slightly disappointed that his song wouldn't be on it. Of course this was at a time where he still felt the need to prove himself as a songwriter.

I always get excited when you do these Michael Jackson videos, but I almost got a little extra excited lol. When I saw original, I thought this was going to be of his demo version. If you haven't heard it, you most definitely should 😀

In order to really appreciate this version, I think you have to break down the demo version of P.Y.T. which is a totally different song in its vocals as well as its arraignment! The demo version itself broken down is a masterpiece on the construction and it almost seems as if they said let's throw this out as great as it is and go in a different and more high tempo version as it becomes what you hear here!
Quincy asked Michael and two others to write a song called PYT. So the demo is actually Michael's version but they decided it's too slow, they wanted an up-tempo song. So they went with James Ingram's version which is this song that you hear on the album. The two songs don't really have anything to do with each other. Just share the same title. Personally I adore both😊

Imperfect vocals and arrangement is where the magic happens. That's not a criticism of the clear genius of his work, but keeping things clean and sterile doesn't give life or character to the song. Give me headphone bleeds, foot tapping and ad libs everyday.

I think he's actually singing the "crying" technique, he was really into it. It's like cooking I think, you have to cook with love and thinking to someone. This make the different when you are singing and if you are just interested for the money and of how much you singing good..i think this is not the way, we can really learn from Michael how to get into the world of music. I could kiss that guy he represented American raised producers which we still had in the 80s. Most producers even in the 70s were European and dominated a lot of the high selling records. And RIP the talented rod temperton who rounded out the team and composed and played on those hits.

Great analysis Chris, love these multitracks you're getting ahold of. You should check out the band Hiss Golden Messenger for a unique folk style. I remember david bowie said his music sounded like “Mystical country, like an eerie yellowing photograph.” I always really enjoyed his nasal vocal style. Might be fun to cover but a bit out of the ordinary for your channel. Either way, carry on my friend!

yeah when i got these to work on a cover i was amazed man! i got James's tracks listening to him sing that and work with mike that also amazed me
