  • Basic video, everyone starts somewhere.
    Re-make of an older video, which I was never really satisfied with. This video was shot just after I put the twisted low rise handlebars on which is why my cables are all over the place.

    I had my puch about 30 years ago, when i was about 16, it was a smashing little machine and gave me freedom at an age when i needed it.
    You dont forget a bike that made you smile everytime you used it :-)
    So cheap, so easy to fix, so forgiving on timing and points/sparkplug gap.
    Thats why i subbed to travistutorials, to see him enjoy the machines like i did.
    Enjoy your machine :-)

    Looks fine, with one important suggestion. ALWAYS remove the filler plug FIRST. If there's a problem and you've already removed the drain plug, you'll have a transmission with no fluid...and no way of adding any.

    As a suggestion, if the engine is warmed and the fill plug removed before dropping the drain plug, the faster the fluid may drain faster. I'd think the faster the flow, the better chance of carrying away any debris.

    Good old pink atf, using anything else can distroy the clutch, so atf it was for me :-)
    On the "n" type machine there was a ordinary screw that you removed after overfilling, then it dripped out untill the correct level was reached. (bike on level ground)
    I used to feel when the fiber washer was squashing a little, then stop.
    If you grab the spanner/wrench close to the nut then you wont strip it :-)
    Smashing little bikes, so easy to repair :-)

    awesome videos! keep them coming please! The MA wiki's are good, but videos make the job much easier, as well as your commenting. Please post some videos on changing to race crank, or installing new kit,

    Hey Travis. Is it bad to have a ZA50 engine sitting (not running) without any oil in the transmission for a couple of months or should it be fine?

  • @michaelkuzmadutton7879

    so when you fill it up with oil does it just reach the top of the hole for the fill plug?

    Just changed out the type f fluid in 2 of my puchs that had no issues before hand and the day after both puchs poured out all the fluid. both the bolt and the gasket is not leaking. Any other ideas on what the hell is causing both the leak out?

  • @jonnolly
    @jonnolly Před 5 lety

    Fibre washers on plugs should be replaced. Filler should be removed prior to drainage to avoid vacuum. Best to drain warm.

    Ive got a 1979 Puch Pinto. What oil brand do you suggest? If we have car transmission available can we use that? thanks

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  Před 9 lety

      Honestly even the bargain brand Type F is probably light years ahead of what they had in the late 1970s so I've just bought whatever is cheap. People run all kinds of oil to give them different slip on performance bikes, but if it's stock why risk breaking down the material on the pads with a non factory recommended oil, for a short term fix it's probably fine though.

    Got another puch i changed the fluid in it and its turn brown already changed it again and its brown again after riding it for a bit. Was racing my brothers chinese 50cc scooter a bit. Put a 15mm bing on it, it seems to run just fine but i swear i can smell burnig clutch(tranny fluid) im not sure maybe its just the rich oil mixture i was running inside it to run around with it was fearful of seizing it (gonna add the proper mixture). Could need some other stuff got a spare e50 off my basket case free spirit has a good looking clutch if ive gotts swap.

    • @Terryjr
      @Terryjr Před 7 lety

      You need to drop the oil pan and clean it out, it probably has sludge in it which will always keep smelling like burning sludge, and will keep turning your fresh oil brown. And yes it will seize your engine. You dont need heavier oil. Thats the last thing you wamt to do.

    hi i have a 1977 free spirit moped from sears it was made by such and I'm fixing it up for my grandpa he's always wanted to see it run again would Pennzoil 5523 Type-F Automatic Transmission Fluid work fine?

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  Před 9 lety

      *****
      Yep, I like to think that any brand of Type F you put into it is going to be light years ahead of whatever was available in the 1970s. If it's been sitting a while you'll probably have to clean they carb and maybe clean the points and if you are lucky not much more, good luck!

    • @danstaszko8039
      @danstaszko8039 Před 9 lety

      ah ok and another question i replaced the throttle cable on it but when ever kick it over the throttle is closed and i can't let it del unless i set the choke like all the way down but then when i go to pull in the throttle and then let it go it dosesnt slow down it stays at the same speed so like the chock dosent move back down

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  Před 9 lety

      So, under normal operation you push the choke, then once you twist the throttle to wide open the throttle slide moves the choke up and it should stay there. If your choke is constantly "falling" down you have a problem. If your throttle isn't returning all the way then your cable is probably too long or not tensioned correctly. There are two kinds of throttle cables for Puchs - one have a knarp on both ends and the other has a knarp on the carb end and bare cable on the other. If you have the second type adjustment is easy, just cut the cable and probably the housing a little shorter with some tin snips. If you have the first type with a knarp on both ends you'll have to buy a knarp and really play around with it if you don't like moped cruise control or as it's most commonly called "dead man's throttle".

    • @TravisTutorial
      @TravisTutorial  Před 9 lety

      ***** For the choke, it probably slid out of the notch in the choke lever when you were putting the top of the carb back on it - should be an easy fix.
