The most crushing thing about this song is how we know eliza is gentle and kind and at the end she wishes he will burn. The most gentle and kind of that story, had been crushed and broken by this act by Alexander.

Yes for sure! I'm sure the fact that it was filmed affected her performance in many ways. I know for a fact she's got great technique so I'm not worried about her based on this one performance!!
@@kiras2250 I agree, the expression on her face makes it seem like she's doing it unintentionally to me.
I think maybe it was just when she was acting. She definitely does a more smooth push in the cast recording of the song. I have listened to it many times lol. She sounds slightly different in a few places on the recording versus the film.
Also from I know about the night of that performance she was also grieving a family loss and it was a more emotional night for her so that could’ve affected her performance when it was filmed.
They also filmed this performance after doing a regular 8 show week, and had to run it multiple times. This should have been their very necessary rest day, but instead they had to do more performances. Every single one of them was physically and vocally exhausted (aside from Groff who had already left the show and just came back to film).
so I'm a theatre tech person who can't sing worth a darn... but I love your reaction videos, I'm always in awe of singers... This is remarkable reaction to great singing... but as a lighting person, I have to comment on how well it is lit and the color blending between her dress and the blue light that surrounds her, without losing any natural tones on her skin... and if you get a wider shot of this scene you will notice that they also matched the color of the accent lighting on the stage to the color of the flame...
Yes! I did lighting in high school and I wish I had been given proper guidance, because lighting is used so beautifully here.
I loved hearing about lighting from a techs point of view! I danced a lot growing up and tech rehearsals were always so long and I never understood why. I didn’t realize so much went into lighting! Thanks for sharing!
Also, I have so much appreciation for tech crews. Everything you guys do makes the shows so much better!

FUN FACT: they used a special kind of paper for the letters eliza burns, so it burns from the point she lights it up until the song ends so she can exit in a total blackout

She is definitely one of the best in the theater. Oh my god, she has the voice of a goodness. One recommendation I have is Peter Hollens' Disney Medley. It's so good and covers so many genres. Amazing video, Hannah!

I love that the song has a backstory like how she loved Alexander, she adored him and you could see that in the movie and hear it in the music, she loved him and he broke her heart, I love this song because it has a backstory and emotion, AMAZING JOB! The crying and trembling in the voice at some moments makes it so beautiful.
Please do a reaction to Alex Brightman! He is my absolute favorite Broadway actor! He's been in School of Rock, which I think is the most like the way he likes to sing, but it's a little raspy and shouty because of the intensity of all the songs. Then there's Beetlejuice where he does a specific voice. I think it would be really neat if you could watch an interview where he talks about the voice, because it's something only he can do without damaging his vocal chords. And then he has a solo song called Marie and Me, which I think is the truest to his real voice. Love your videos so much!

Love this song! Burn will always hold a special place in my heart, as I played Eliza as my first “big” role in a musical. So much fun, and Who Lives Who Dies is a song you should definitely react too! Some awesome notes in that song

I LOVE how instructive this is! You give us so much insight in how she's doing what she's doing and other ways that she could perform it that might be easier (or gentler on our own voices) than how Philippa Soo does it herself in this performance.
I honestly like those little rasps because from the acting standpoint it sound like fighting back tears. For the sustainability part you talked about I feel like some of this was different because they were recording for Disney because when I saw the show I didn’t notice some of this

Fun fact: They worked so hard on the scene. Because they had to find the exact right paper that would burn through the exact right amount of time. So they could have a dramatic moment of the fire going out when she leaves the stage.

I never felt that you were being nit picky. I found you so incredibly helpful! I am a singer who loves this song and wants to tackle it and everything you mentioned were things I was struggling with in the song. So it felt like I got a mini voice lesson in this song!! Thank you so much, I recently realized, thanks for a voice class, that I’ve been singing with a lot of unnecessary tension and stress and that it should feel relaxing and never tight in your body as you sing. I’m currently working on that now and it’s really hard but feels so good when I remember that it should feel as good physically as it does emotionally 🥰 thanks for your help, now I feel more capable to do this song justice 🤩

I love how she brings a lot more weight to her voice when she stands up. Standing up or sitting down are usually a really powerful physical actions in theatre as they usually mark a turning point to the character's emotions and bringing this to a turning point to her voice as well is great acting being done. She makes very good choices.

This song is not easy to do. It's become a bit of a personal project for me. As a very happy Soprano 1, this song sits right on that edge between my head and chest voice. I'm constantly struggling with that edge. I've actually learned I can only practice is while I'm still only semi-warmed up (I know, horrible), because otherwise I end up really hurting my cords. Someday I will master the balance between emotion and breathing.
Besides that, this is the first video I've ever seen of you, Hannah, and I think you're so precious. I already have a bunch of your other video queued up to watch.

That song at the end where they reconcile after the death of their son, and then the final song narrated by Soo, had tears streaming down my face. I do *not* cry at movies, but musicals have this weird way of getting to me, my mom and sister thought it was hysterical that i'm damn near bawling at that point in the play, I so wish I could have seen this live.
