Yeah no it’s baaaad Plz y’all it’s not hard to get a pretty good artist to do this for you.
And you guys totally ignored her warrior outfit

I'd bet there are people interested in armor/weapons who made videos about that. It's not something I'd think a fashion historian would know

@@beccag2758 idk dude.. it doesn't seem like she knows what she's talking about either. It's clear that she's reading something. Don't get me wrong. The drawing of Mulan made me confident of my art skills
Fandom Queen Not all art has to be perfect
Christian Salgado no it does not but you need to stop saying this, that art is honestly horrid. And a better depiction would help us understand better.
@@iamchristian1129 I know that. My art is not the most beautiful thing so I have no right to be criticizing any other drawings. But this is "Glamour", a channel that hires professionals to inspect movies to know if they were accurate or not. If they can do that, why not hire a professional to draw? There are a lot of talented people who would be grateful for this opportunity.
Me too! I’m like wow I can do better than that. That never happens.

@@iamchristian1129 ?? I meant the skill level of the drawings themselves. like the artist was not very good at drawing anatomically correct humans

All the illustrations for this series are not that great, but this is a whole 'nother level. I don't understand why a company like Glamour can't get afford a better illustrator??
the art in this show is terrible, once again. Maybe hire an illustrator that knows the clothing of the period you're working on, because this doesn't look accurate at all.
Dune Kilens they try to make it look like the style in the Chinese ballad, this is usually how a lot of Chinese stories are drawn
Christian Salgado no it’s really not it looks nothing like a Chinese Ballad it just looks like a drawing of a child. It has no anatomy or form, whoever drew that needs to go back and study the art fundamentals and use reference if they really wanted to draw like the Chinese Ballads.
Dune Kilens Not all art has to be perfect
I agree people who don’t do art seem to be upset about what you said. In all honesty it looks like someone learning digital art.
Dune Kilens to be completely fair, talking dragons and statues that come to life aren’t very accurate to life either.
I find the series very interesting but the art depiction put me off. It came across very frumpy and didn’t translate the beauty of the garments well
Yeah, it makes properly visualizing what Mulan would've looked like pretty difficult. If they'd at least used a traditional Chinese style or Disney style it would've been okay
Pretty sure it's implied that the jade necklace is her grandmothers and possibly passed down.
I get the feeling that it's a little too nice even to be an heirloom. It would be like if a modern girl was going to an important event and her mother pulled out a diamond necklace worth three times as much as their house. Not impossible, but if you saw it in a film you probably wouldn't buy it.
I thought that too, but considering Mulan's family has only one daughter and they need her to marry well I could see them busting out the big guns.
In the other hand I didn't have the feeling that the family were poor. The dad was a war hero, highly respected and know, even for the son of a militar family that was a big deal (based in context of the movie). Not saying that fame equals Fortune, but you add that to the house they have and it becomes harder to call them poor.
@@jessicav931 yes and didnt we all see their wonderful garden temple and house. They are pretty wealthy and it's not like they had other daughters that could secure the future with mariage.
@@femke6313 Also - a poor family would have tried to have more children. Yes it wouldn'T be that affordable to feed them, but poor people couldn't afford good doctors - So they have to had more than one child to have the chance that even ONE of them would survive the childhood. And since there was never a mention of siblings or siblings who died earlier they aren'T poor :D
(I want to describe it better, but my english isn'T good enough for the text my mind is sketching up)
They actually do show her shoes in her second outfit. When she sings reflection, she jumps onto the bridge and we can see her shoes.
yeah, I actually rewatched that scene after I seen this comment. It is like black shoes..
Not just then. When she is getting ready to go to the matchmaker you see her shoes when she is going down the stairs after the bath, a tiny bit going down the stairs after being fully dressed and and a lot when she picks up her skirts and runs a bit to catch up with the other ladies.
You also see a similar pair of shoes in the second movie worn by the princesses
Yes! I was looking for this comment!
yes! and they are like really accurate
Mulan's family aren't just farmers, her father is a retired general I believe.
Yeah their house literally has a courtyard
Yup, and iirc, the higher ranking army officers were treated like higher class people, like nobles
No wonder I felt so weird when they said farmer family
If he was a general, I don't think he would have been conscripted in the same way as the other villagers. In Chinese made historical fantasies, military commanders are treated like aristocracy, and they generally had an elaborate estate, so they probably wouldn't be living in the village with the commonfolk. Plus, Mulan went to a camp to undergo training like all the common soldiers, and Chifu was aware that Fa Zhou didn't have a son. It's more likely that he was a war hero, but then again, those are still fictional shows.
Why is the shading like that?? Her anatomy? You did her dirty😭💀
You so familiar are the artist in tiktok video

The jade necklace was mentioned to be an heirloom...
As well as her jade comb
Also they are extremely wealthy, her dad was a famous general and new the emperor.

I would love to see a redraw of Mulan's historically accurate dress by someone who actually understands clothing folds.

yea then these ppl just throw all of that in the trash
Seriously? You're looking at Mulan, the badass woman that fights, and you decide to completely forego the clothes she wears for the vast majority of the film, and the vast majority of her development?

You missed the point of the video dumbass

@@honda-akari yea so they would have been able to afford the jude bead this is really inaccurate and it just doesnt do anyone the outfits form when she was a boy
Yes her father is a soldier
You need to spend some more money on an artist. The person who does these has probably used a lot of time making them, but if the clothes (which is what is focused on) isn't represented in a visible nice way, it ruins the picture. With historical clothes the viewers feel way more excited seeing the clothes drawn prettily and recognizable (and in this case, closer to the disney art style maybe) and not this that looks too off and a bit dirty.
As I've mentioned in another video of yours, I will gladly do your drawings. That, or at least spend a bit more on a professional artist.

rising no I’m not, this video is about looking at characters in movies, and see what they look like if they exist and if it’s accurate for the time, and I’m not insulting it by any means, Im just saying that they have to draw them in a more historical and ancient style because of we’re the time period of the story takes place, I think the reason why the artist drew it like that because they want to make more historical and what the legend is, and even the culture of China made it look like

It was said in the audio commentary that some of the clothing styles were inspired by the Tang Dynasty fashion. That may be why the collar is a bit more open.
Robin Fa wide open collars are actually ACCURATE to the Northern Wei style! just about everything else is hundreds-thousands of years "off", however.
@@BattyButtercup That's interesting. I don't know much about the Northern Wei so I'm just going off what the video said. It's weird that they didn't know that.
Robin Fa the inaccuracies were so painful to me i have legitimately spent the past 2 hours editing a rant & then just OUT RIGHT RE-DOING the "fact-checking" in this video. i say this as a person who watched my VHS copy of Mulan so often as a child, rewinding and rewatching it several times in the same sitting, to an extent that drove my family to CONFISCATE AND HIDE THE TAPE INSIDE A CHAIR. When i found it again, YEARS later, i... immediately sought out the video player to watch it again.
@@BattyButtercup I'd like to see that if it's up on your channel. I've been obsessed with Mulan for years too, although I placed the movie in the Tang (which is why I know about that dynasty a lot more than Northern Wei, despite the ballad) for a few reasons.
Robin Fa though i have joked that i should vlog many a time, my rant re-fact checking this video is but a mere multi-paragraphed comment on this video.
why wouldn't you get a chinese fashion historian to comment on a chinese character dressed in traditional chinese clothing steeped in chinese culture lmfao
Well I assume this fashion historian has a decree in Chinese fashion? She is not the usual fashion historian so I assume she was hired on purpose.
I mean they didn’t have a French fashion historian or an African American historian for the belle or Tiana videos. I do agree it would be cool to see a Chinese historian but it’s very possible this woman has studied Chinese fashion. She was just hired and given a script like the others.

Still. Fave Disney female alongside Hercules' Meg.
Me too, and it's also very cool that she was inspired by a real woman and this is one of my favorite movies not only because of that. But, also I'm pretty much obsessed with a lot of things about the Chinese culture and everything else about this movie was good too, especially Li Shang (hello handsome). The sequel although I like it, could've been way better. There was an alternative beginning in the deleted scenes with choreographed martial arts and impressive scenery and a proposal that was more climactic than the one they went with, which would've changed the whole tone of the movie. But, unfortunately they didn't go down that route.

Yeah, because you're not allowed to talk about any culture but your own these days....
they try to make it look like the style in the Chinese ballad, this is usually how a lot of Chinese stories are drawn
@@countrye3013 I just assumed she was talking about how the lady wad pronouncing the words. My Chinese isn't the best, but she definitely could have done better. An chinese person would have had a better grasp of the language and probably some of the cultural aspects, but that's just me.
Nothing wrong with it being a white lady, but it makes me think she's not that much of an expert if she didn't actually learn to pronounce things right or at least admitted that pronounciation is difficult for her.
Her race doesn't matter, but her actually being knowledgble on a topic she's an expert in absolutely does.
A Chinese person is no more likely to know than anyone else who studied the material. Being a race doesn't mean you know the cultures associated just because.
However those drawings are an insult. I've seen ballad drawings, even ones specifically about Mulan. They do NOT look like that. They have a style and a silhouette that looks slim, similar to Japanese historical drawings.
She doesn't give context, though. Mulan is a legend with a few different iterations. She doesn't talk much about the history of the original story, or the fact that different versions set the story in different dynasties.
Also, China is a very large country with many different regional aspects. Class and ethnic differences, plus the influence of trade and proximity with India and Mongolia, would also impact clothing styles, especially since Northern Wei rulers weren't ethnically Han themselves.
I'm sure she knows some stuff about historical fashions, but there's cultural gaps in her knowledge because they fall outside of her area of expertise. For instance, some of the other historians will specify stuff like "For the sake of this conversation, I'm going to use the fashion of xyz as the basis, even though I acknowledge that it's a fairy tale and there isn't a real time frame." But Mulan is actually time and place specific, so it would have been nice to have someone who studied Chinese history and literature in addition to fashion be able to add more color. Realistically, someone Chinese would have been more knowledgeable, and I wish they had been open to the idea of subtitling if they couldn't find an English speaker.
who else is looking up the match maker song now? lol
Ive been binge watching these videos for hours now 😅
These are the kind of videos that make me glad youtube exists
Also, being a Chinese person who is interested in fashion history (have to say I'm not a professional) I can spot so many mistakes in this. It seems like it's more of a 'reference Mulan's costume against general Chinese culture' video, than a period-specific, historically accurate clothing video.
