Duke of Westminster Faces Backlash for Plans to Demolish a London Tower

  • Dec.10 -- Hugh Grosvenor, the seventh Duke of Westminster, is the U.K.’s third-richest person and considered by some its most eligible bachelor. Criticism is mounting for the Duke and his Grosvenor Group Ltd. The firm faces opposition to its plans to demolish a London tower that houses some of the city’s poorest residents, attracting negative headlines as rising inequality becomes an increasingly hot topic. Bloomberg's Tom Metcalf and Lisa Abramowicz discuss the backlash.

    Also, even when he did gave £12.5 million to the NHS fight against COVID-19, he got criticised for the amount, since he was a billionaire. So he can't do good from doing harm. What about other billionaires, dukes, earls, viscounts? I have not heard one of them give a large donation

      @@gilesgraves2725 it is NOT the National Health Service. We should be very careful about being such mugs. The 2012 Health and Social Welfare Act has given it a way in a sense. As far as I know the buck stops with a controlling executive manager from the insurance industry .Before 2012 the buck stopped with the secretary of state. You don't need an annual 650 million pound for business consultants to run hospitals. it's jobs for freinds and contracts for all the bits of it that are already given away. Plus the are huge 80 billion plus in PFI debts for it to pay and it's ring fenced which gives acronyms in Guernsey and god knows where else control of the finances of whole hospitals. They can wring money out of them and even force the NHS to sell of perfectly good hospitals to pay them. The CONservatives hate the concept of the NHS because it is such a good example of working socialism. They hate it. Never forget that.

      I never understood the logic that a donation is only noteworthy when someone is bankrupting themself to make it.
      Of course he would only give away a fraction of his wealth. You would do the same thing too. Don’t lie to yourself and say you wouldn’t.

    Fair do’s to the young Duke, my dad traced my own family lineage back over 400 years, and sadly, just like Jeremy Clarkson found with his, there was significant wealth in my family but irritatingly between; gambling, paying off out of wedlock children, drinking, general arrogance of wasting wealth and complete incompetence, it, by the late 1800’s was gone. The importance of knowing the value of something is knowledge to appreciation and sustainment of wealth, the Dukes family understood that as does he.

    • @indiaandrews6996
      @indiaandrews6996 Před 3 lety +7

      So true and that is why his family have held onto their wealth when so many other families went from wealth to nothing within a couple of generations. My own father has this attitude of you cannot take it with you, so every inheritance he and my mother received he bought automobiles, went out to eat, went on vacations, bought recreational vehicles and just frittered away the money until he was back exactly where he started financially. I once tried to impress on Dad the financial mess he was leaving behind for his heirs to clean up because Dad likes to spend more money than has debts. My Dad smiled at me and brightly responded, “Their problem. Not mine. I will be dead!” So I guess my brother and I will have the job of taking care of what never should have happened.

    Pimlico was handed over to the Government as a means of payment for death duties from the current Duke's Grandfather. Who says that the rich do not pay taxes!

      Idk why people hate on people who have inherited wealth (After all that is the point of working hard in the first place to be able to give something to your children/descendants when you are gone) as long as the person inheriting it is educated properly by his parents their shouldn't be a problem. But unfortunately a lot of poor people are really jealous of certain billionaires all the time and it's sad instead of trying to be like them or compete with them they waste their time hating. Plus he's the 7th Duke of Westminster so meaning for 7 generations now his family was able to maintain their wealth and that say's a lot.

      You could say the Kardashians do not add any value but they go on making billions.
      Good on his family for not frittering away their assets over the assets.
      A lot of our ancestors (including our parents with their inheritances from the WW2 generation) had a you cannot take it with you attitude. So instead of investing the money to increase their families wealth, they lived large for a couple of years buying consumer goods, going on vacation, etc. Great experiences for them but not the kind of decisions that build wealth from one generation to the next like the Grosvenors.

    People commenting must not be familiar with the area. Some really significant architecture which I doubt the Duke has the maturity which age provides yet, to appreciate. A protected olive tree, and even Belgravia police station are due for demolition. City of Westminster properties are also being abolished as part of the scheme. What has already been built is not only largely uninhabited (bought by overseas investors), but ugly 'modern' (not modernist) boxes that look like they could be from any 'new wealth' city. The older Belgravia owner-residents don't want this. It is going the way CapCo has changed Covent Garden, turning neighbourhoods of historical interest into Instagram theme parks. I hope the Duke understands were he in an rta, he'd need the NHS and local police to assist, the very people being squeezed out, after generations have happily coexisted with the more gentrified owners for a long time. I in now way envy this young man the burden of such wealth, however I do hope he has the courage to change his plans if has a change of heart. Thoroughly enviable architecture being demolished and families young and old uprooted for no greater good.
