I am a 74 year old woman who has spent a lot of time hiking around and observing wildlife in North Carolina, seeking healing in our beautiful wild environments from the mountains to the outer banks. I have never hunted, though my family has harvested fresh road kills from time to time. I used to fish. At one time when I was growing up in NYstate, I was prejudiced against hunters, I thought they were idiots. This was because the stories of hunters driving down the Palisades Parkway with someones cow or goat tied to the hood of their car, heading back to NYC after whitetail season opened.But I always felt if I was gonna eat meat I should kill it myself, going to the grocery and getting a chicken on a styrofoam tray and wrapped in plastic seemed kind of wrong and not all that healthy. Anyhow, I really love this show and have learned so much and have such a big crush on Cal, Steve and many other guys that live this way.Though I do not hunt, I want to in my next life. I have enjoyed tracking animals in the fresh snow, or mud, sleuthing out their habits and where they live.Bird watching, and listening and seeing coyotes, getting to know grey foxes and barred owls....anyhow, thanks guys.
A lot of hunters are idiots, especially the younger kids hunting in groups. I’m glad I was introduced to the hunting world by Rinella, he captures the beauty of nature in such an incapsulating way, it shows the whole silent majority of hunters that are just outdoors men abiding by conservation
At least you recognize your bias. Life isn't about sending a message to the world. A lot of the people who are "offending" others are just living their life the way they want to. The person more concerning than just living your life is the weak, hateful person who feels the authority to interrupt and interject and cry for help from the government.
Putting a field dressed animal on the hood of a car dries the meat with air. Wet meat spoils. Showing dead animals to people is socially taboo. It's a tight line to walk...
Conner seems like a great kid. Very composed. Held his own in a room full of envious elk hunters:)

@@cynic1864able respect goes both ways , and calling a young man that is 16 a “child” is just as disrespectful, even if you don’t realize it . I get where you’re coming from and i agree we should encourage people to be polite more often . My problem is, your manners at 16 reflect the men you’re raised around , and those men are not from his generation . I think we should point fingers at the dudes who fall short of teaching younger men these things, rather than calling out the “kid” for it .
I don't hunt, fish or trap, but my friends and relatives do. It's a part of my family heritage that I wish I had connected with when I was a youth, but I just never did. Nevertheless, I love this channel, because I love learning about the outdoors, wildlife management, history, and most of all I love hearing a bunch of really intelligent people talking about a subject they are passionate about. I also appreciate when Steve stops to get clarification on things from his guests in the middle of an interview, recognizing that everybody might not be up on certain jargon or close enough to an issue to quite understand what the person is talking about. I learn a ton by watching this channel. Keep up the great work.
As a hunter/fisher, these guys have a VERY mixed bag of emotions from the hunting population. They are trying to gain influence of hunters and have gone "too far" for many. There is distrust of these guys. The intentions and mission statement are unclear and seemingly never ending. They seem compliant to new regulations which many passionately oppose. It's basically a division of government decreeing policy and people falling in line vs government being a service to the hunters and fishermen to manage populations and facilitate order. Closing seasons, introducing new predation, changing maps, taking away methods for taking game, land closures, preserve creation are all threats to what we do and enjoy and it's a constant dividing battle. Your average voting person has no clue what they are even voting on when it comes to these topics.

Got to deal with one of those signature collectors at whole foods for the mountain lion issue. Told the lady I support those who hunt, even though I don't hunt, and she needed to leave to property as whole foods didn't allow those collectors on the property. She seemed stunned. They also use pictures of mountain lions to pull at your heart.
You need to have more young hunters on . That was a great interview , I was giggling all though it . Lot less ego with the young ones….good stuff
The only way I have been to get anti hunters or people on the cusp of being an anti hunter to see reason is by using the argument of "Who do you want to value those resources" argument.
Do you want hunters who are paying into a system for the opportunity to hunt? Or do you want land developers, miners, giant mega corporations?
Then the next thing is, if we are not going to manage the resources for hunting then the shift will be managing those resources for profit for those larger corporations.
Then I give them plenty of anecdotal and general examples. Mainly of Californias Central Valley where water politics have shifted the hunting and public land/private landscape.
I also talk about very truthfully about how the turkey/quail/dove/small game hunting grounds I enjoyed as a kid was bought up by Amazon and is now a giant Amazon distribution center and an auto mall. The other area is now an HOA with condos in the million range. All of those thriving ecosystems are now ecosystems occupied by rats and ducks at man made fountains.
For me it has been the best approach to shape the narrative that most states want nothing to do with management of those lands especially as more wildfires rage in the west... they want to sell or give away those parcels to checkerboarders who are going to turn it into logging, monoculture farming and other things that have a negative impact on the environment.
The argument is simple and effective.
Sadly, I think most of the anti-hunting set will be, and likely already are good with handing the "hunt/genuine conservation" over to their government, or an agency selected by the politicians they put far too much trust in for the things they hold dear, much less the things they see no cause for, or are completely against for any reason.
They will lose it when predators start to devour their rat-sized dogs, cats, etc. But, still won't see reason to give that control back to the "evil" hunter.
@@ggray19 The key in the argument though is to key in on their supposed love for the animal. A new Amazon that comes kills the ecosystem and kills off all animal and plant life and is replaced by fake grass and pavement.
That has been the only way I have gotten through to a lot of people. Describing that if you cannot be pro wildlife and then systematically destroy it by giving it over to interest groups that want nothing to do with keeping animals alive.

There's some really nice bear in ca. They have a decent season and non res tags aren't bad.

I hate paying pet insurance each month for my duck dog but over the years it has saved my but a few times with big ticket injuries.
Same here for my bird dog, but he's ten now, and I did the math. It saved me over 15k.

Indiana resident here, and we just passed a bobcat season and the antis went down fighting and said similar things, “trophy hunting” “not a need” etc. we might not have any many apex predators as out west but the turkeys sure do need our help on this side of the country!

dang i love this podcast. haha i've maybe held a gun in my hands less than 15 times in my entire life, and i certainly haven't ever hunted, but I can't get enough of these stories.
John Kerr, Toronto Sun, every Thursday had an outdoors column. Man, I was so sad when he retired. He also wrote and was heavily involved in Ontario Out of Doors magazine
Long ago, Pete McGillen had an outdoors column in the Peterborough Intelligencer. He wrote about Toronto quite a lot. It was a very different place back then, and even more so back in his childhood years.
People would catch eels and salmon in the Don. There was a thriving fish market. They hunted bear, whitetails, and geese in places that have since become part of the GTA

So I also had a pneumothorax after a failed chemo port placement attempt, I can tell you that (minus treatment, and the actual placement of my chemo portthey had me high as a kite on a mountain) he didnt notice his lungs didn't work. Just that he was busted up. It feels harder to move fast but i just thought i had sore ribs from all the cutting and J-tube placement, so maybe that'll settle your minds a bit.

Here in Idaho we have a state agency that manages the relationship between ranchers/ grazers and the general public. I'm talking about this conservation and hunting issue with the extremists of razors and ranchers should be included.

Great podcast, its good people are waking up. I suspect a lot of these people eat meat and are un aware how heavily what they are promoting could backfire. Also these fan written songs are phenomenal!
Cal's confidence in his facts against rock climbing/biking (recreation) is the cutest... there's no damn way you power that argument for hunting, or more accurately against the recreationalists that simply don't support or have real experience with hunting. And they simply aren't afraid, until it's too late that they may also be giving up their own rights while they are basking in the takedown of others.
I have a heeler/aussie get clipped as a pup at 6months old by a pick up. had nerve damage and he started to chew it off so we cut it off finally. That dog still out work most dogs with 4 legs but he will run himself to death before quitting. So got to watch him and let him ride when not chasing hard it’s front leg. 4 months later another issue came up went to k-state university and that was steep and finally 10months later he made it threw that. Was still working and he broke his back leg on same side he was missing the front leg. But after 8 weeks more like 3 weeks he was back at it never could tell he broke that leg he was so in tune yet but we tryed to keep going on two legs. We had to keep him back and get him to heal he is 6 years old and was a home raised pup we have his mom so was free now he is 8-10k dog easily but blood line is so dang good and he’s in tacked male so we are trying to keep blood line going. Him and his brother are last two from the dad around and that dog is amazing that’s hole different story that is amazing he will take big sow pigs down by there ear and hold them until they get there to get the hogs he will work cattle and pigs and also hunt raccoons. Been shot in the head in cross fire deal lost sight in one eye but still going. This was long post but just shows u how amazing dogs are and can over come almost anything and be the best tool for us. A good dog is never a tool but a co-worker or hunting companion and more thrustworthy than a human, it will never stab you in the back.

Always something about watching a dog work a fresh scent. Almost just as happy when it ends up being a hen because it's just as cool watching the dog work. He gets a little pissed at me if it was a rooster and I miss. He will yip at me to tell me he's not impressed

Mountain lion actually took my dog when I lived back in California.

An argument I use for my non-hunting friends is simple. Without hunters, eventually these animals will have to be managed by someone. You can either have hunters PAYING to manage them, with the proceeds going directly towards further conservation efforts, or you can have every single tax payer paying professional sharpshooters, trappers, etc. to come in and manage them. I would think most people that don't have a dog in this fight would like to keep as much of their paycheck as possible.

That rock climber argument is SOLID. Lory State Park has signage all over the place for areas where you can no longer climb because they are trying to help the raptor population in the area. Also, last time I was hunting in there, those rock climbers didn't seem to care for the hunters in the area. For sure not on the same team out there. But yeah, it is a slippery slope to start taking away freedoms just because a minority group is speaking louder about their lies. I really hope that we can make some strides to prevent more anti-hunting initiatives like this one. Denver/Boulder folks are ruining one of the greatest states to exist in the lower 48.

Hunting has become about money to the goverment and nothing else! They are all about taking the hunters and fisherman’s money but they could care less about doing anything that might preserve elk,deer or pronghorn! It’s sad because it has been going on for years! Being around hunting almost 70 years and seeing things changed over time the writing is on the wall it’s just a matter of time🤔😳😢 better enjoy it while we can!

When a dog is that valuable I’m surprised you guys haven’t run into hound hunters, military/public service dog handlers, or Veterinarians that haven’t educated you guys on canine field trauma care. Just as you get educated, trained up (hopefully), and then even offer your NAR trauma/first aid kits (tourniquets, hemastatic gauze, chest seals, +boo boo kit) for humans I would hope you would do the same for your pups. Especially given the vet bills you could avoid (to a degree). -a paramedic hunterr

Lets remember too, that the lions that the state kills are killed because, and only because, THEY ARE IN CONFLICT!! With cats, bears, wolves and the like, conflict usually equates to human safety.

Seems like an odd choice of cities to visit for a meateater tour. San Diego, Anaheim, Sacramento, Portland. I’m sure they’ll be enough people in those big cities to make it worthwhile. But doesn’t seem like the target demographic
I think it's an effort to get non-hunters to show up and introduce them to hunting or maybe change their mind about hunting.

The voting majority of many states live in population dense cities that are often anti-hunting. Look at California…. Vastly red/rural/country/farmland in regards area, but outvoted in 3 population dense urban cities.

Amazing elk but seems like it was a pretty unethical and haphazard way of shooting it. I'm surprised first of all that his dad encouraged it in the first place but also a bit surprised that taking hail-mary shots at animals didn't get more pushback from the rest of the guys.

@@flatsquatch 14:00 he says it's the first time he's ever shot that far, so he had no prior experience at all, and he was using holdovers on a scope he doesn't understand (which is why he missed his first shot, not bad luck). Taking potshots at an animal for laughs is not ethical and pretending otherwise is pathetic.
The 17-year old has more experience hunting Elk than the MeatEater crew seems to have dealing with these anti-hunters (dare I say Leftist politicians)... Sort of evident during past conversations, but shining bright here. Lobbing bullets from miles away with their eyes closed. Cal at least should be better at this battle... it feels like he's missing it pretty severely at this point.
My 15 year old is better at the conversation than I am because these kids these days are emotionally connected. I was raised in the "if you dont have something nice to say" or "speak softly and carry a big stick" days. He's got his dad's demeanor, but also has the snarky swagger of the kids these days. I don't care what the face of the brand looks like as long as it gets results.
My wife simply tells people "I pay extra for free range, organic, hormone, pesticide free, non-gmo food. It doesn't get more 'THAT' than what my boys bring home to eat.
The Western States have severely cut Nonresident License Quotas. Almost all this hunting happens on public lands. Every one of these States relies on Federal Funds to fund State Government, money from Nonresidents. Yet these States continue to limit Nonresident hunting opportunities to 10 percent of total available licenses. The interest in supporting hunting will diminish if the everyone is not

Sorry guys…hunting in the US is in decline and is borderline unrecoverable. Public land is great - if you live close to it. Otherwise you either have to own land, know somebody who will let you hunt theirs, or pay thousands of dollars a year for a lease or access for a few weeks a year. I live in Texas (grew up hunting), but haven’t even shot my rifle in years because there is just nowhere to go without shelling big bucks (pun intended!). Hunting has become big business and it’s priced out meat hunters like me.
You must not have many friends. I live in Texas and have access to 5 or 6 places to hunt for free. Just gotta be friendly and meet good folks

Man, a little positivity may help you do more than get hunting access. Dont give the sport a death sentence because of your current personal experience. Some guys drive hours and hours just to go hunting. Some guys, like mentioned many a time in this very episode, travel to drifferent states just to hunt. Its not about convenience. If I could hunt in my backyard thatd be great, but if ifs and buts were peaches and nuts everyday would be Christmas. Get out there and find you a place with some deer on it. I do hope you get a place to go, maybe you just aren't lookin in the right spots. Good luck to ya.
States need to be republics, not democracys. Imagine if they had to win the majority of counties, not just votes. Seems to make a bit more sense to me. Seattle has dictated hunting and fishing for years, and there is no reason Washington shouldnt be a destination place for hunting and fishing except for the policies coming from blue cities.
Is the hunting in Washington on par with like Idaho or Montana? Genuinely curious, I was born there but I've grown up in Oklahoma. I'd even be willing to swap hunts if you have any pointers 😂

I actually left Washington 2 years ago but the situation was/still is below.
Probably similar but it's different species so a different type of hunting from the east side to the west. There are Rocky and Roosevelt elk, mule deer, whitetail, and Columbia blacktail, there is also a Columbia whitetail that they had started issuing tags for as well if I remember correctly, mountain goat, moose, bighorn sheep, black bear, and cougar for big game. You can't use bait or dogs for the average person but the WdFW immediately said you can put in foe special draw hound hunts.
The timber companies kill hundreds if not into the thousands of bears each year due to tree kills. Wolves have started spreading and the deer and elk numbers have started declining due to unchecked predator numbers. They don't like admitting it but they have wiped out packs on at least 5 occasions out of the Spokane area for attacking cattle and sheep.
They banned the burning of log offs decades ago and now use chemicals to control unwanted plants that is decimating the good and the health of elk and deer. Hoof rot has spread across most of the elk in the state and they keep trying to get the public to let them introduce wolves on the west side to control the problem, at the same time admitting that wolves have done nothing to stop its spread into Idaho.
They are apparently trying to ban predator hunting in Washington while introducing grizzlies again. At this point in time you can get 2 over the counter bear tags but only 1 deer tag or elk tag without a special draw. Cougar attacks have been on the rise since they don't fear humans or dogs anymore.
Logging companies require permits now not just as an extra income but becuase they had legitimate complaints about idiots messing with their equipment.
The Obama administration all but stopped the logging of national forests which destroyed a lot of elk feed becuaee with the trees getting bigger less light and thus forage plants are available. Abandoning (think tank trapping and ripping up roads) has lead to difficulties accessing steep and remote country, and makes it impossible to fight a fire becuase they have to rebuild the road. Since they outlawed burning of the clear-cut and grasslands there is an ever increasing fire fuel load in the woodlands, seems they can't take a lesson from Yellowstone and it's fire storms.
We were fortunate to hunt private land for deer, but elk we bought bought access permits and went to bull only units to get away from the crowds.
Fishing has dropped a long way. I didn't do as much fishing but I have friends who say they are willing to accept salmon being closed for a decade to get the fish back, but the tribes have a lot of power and aren't usually willing to play ball.
Washington has a hundred times as many hatcheries as Alaska, but Alaska produces 1 million times as many fish.
Washington is obsessed with genetic diversity instead of numbers, despite claiming that the poor endangered fish are needed for the endangered whales while completely ignoring the soaring seal and sea lion populations that actually take the majority of fish. They also protect other salmon predators like sea run cutthroat trout that love to chow down on salmon fry.
I am not saying species need to be wiped out, but you can't ignore other species that are detrimental to long term goals either.
All of these detrimental policies are put in place by Seattle/King county who then the governor appoints the wildlife commission who are all frankly anti hunter. Since the government has been a near supermajority state (democrat) coming from just 2-3 counties the hunting and fishing has done nothing but continue to decline.
I will always cherish the memories and times that I had, but I won't be going back to hunt, especially not with the price of out of state tags.

That kid should not be bragging about taking a hail mary shot on such a trophy bull or any game animal really. That is so unethical and not something I think meateater would endorse. The fact that he got lucky with the shot is irrelevant and in my opinion, a bad reinforcement of the possibility of getting lucky while making unethical shots will encourage him to take similar shots in the future. The laughter surrounding this part of the conversation is disappointing to say the least. People that have such a voice in the hunting community not pointing out the error of his ways is a disservice to the young man's hunting future and most likely a disservice to game animals he encounters in the future. I have nothing against long range hunting but a lot of work and knowledge is required for it to be ethical. Just my opinion.
Also at 8 minutes in Steve starts to press him on poaching in the area he ended up drawing the tag out, but let’s it go quick cause he can’t be talking about that with a child on this show.
I live in a state where we hunt white tails with shotguns so anything over a couple hundred yards sounds long to me but he said he had a dot for 600 yards and a mark that he thought he could use for 700 yards and he hit two out of three shotsI’ve done worse at 50 yards with my shotgun. I wouldn’t call it a lucky shot.
Your lack of shooting skills is not that of others & your definition of ethical distance is also not that of others.. I've seen people miss 50 yard shots. Ive also seen people get a bad hot and never recover the deer. He hit 2/3 at 600 and was obviously accustomed to long range shooting
Yeah I wouldn’t worry about it. You weren’t much of a hunter at his age if you didn’t do stupid stuff but it’s mostly grown folks who actually watch the show and most of us wouldn’t take a shot like that. But if you did hunt as a kid and “never made a bad decision” you’re probably lying.

Recreational big game hunting ended when we let them release wolves back into the eco system. We just haven’t admitted it to ourselves yet.
So explain why Alaska is the #1 destination for big game hunting then? Their wolves were never wiped out in fact the remain over 98% of their historic range in Alaska.... Why is the big game hunting in Alaska so epic if wolves are the problem?
@dangerousdylan6262 Wolves are a big problem for the deer in southern Alaska. Alaska big game has grown up with wolves. Something southern 48 animals haven’t so they don’t know how to defend themselves. Half of Alaska is swampland. Wolves don’t do well in water so game has an avenue of escape during the summer months. But mostly it boils down to hunting density. If you aren’t hunting wolves, you aren’t going to have “excess” animals for us to hunt. $10 says states like California will completely shut down hunting once wolves get established. It’s all part of the plan. Democrats hate guns and hunting. Do you really believe they care about what happens to big game populations? They proved that when they made hunting mnt lion illegal, or hunting bears with dogs. Can’t hunt bears at all in the Tahoe valley and it probably has the largest concentration of bears anywhere in the world because of the tourists feeding them. Heck it’s not even legal to hunt ground squirrels with a 22LR. Do they care about bears and squirrels? No, they just want to stop hunting.

Every big game animal in North America coexisted with wolves for 10000 + years they are not just part of the ecosystem they are a keystone species. We haven't screwed up Alaska as bad as the lower 48 so they fit better up there. I'd love to have healthy wolf populations in every western state but you got to let us manage them.

Hunting isn't in danger in my opinion it's pointless old jobs like trapping that are. And I'm fine with that the lord does not need us to manage his creatures like that and there's no money in it as a whole and name one person you know wearing fur. So trapping yea that's going bye bye hopefully but no one is taking hunting.

Trapping is an effective tool to manage wildlife, prevent the spread of disease, diminishes wildlife damage, helps control predators that ravage nests and nesting birds, is a part of our heritage for thousands of years and should be held in higher regard. Trappers don't overharvest, they care about the resource. I can go on, not to mention they are some of the most talented and hard-working outdoors men and women out there. If you don't support trappers and trapping, please reconsider.

Nah just popped in to throw my hate for this pay to play private hunting that all this bs promotes. Don't care what way u slice it his brother is right . This kinda content has helped ruin traditional hunting and what it stood for.

The trust the science thing works just fine when it comes to wildlife biology because wildlife biologists aren't bought and paid for by massive corporations whose profit margins hang on the scientists lying about how effective their new drug is or how healthy their ultra processed food is. I think most folks who hunt have a pretty good head on their shoulders and have some common sense. If wildlife biologists at various fish and game departments were being paid by some corporation who stood to make a ton of money depending on what they said I would be very skeptical of what the biologists were saying but that isn't the case. I think trust the science works in this situation.

8K in Arizona … and that’s how it’s done. You can call them in but it’s rare and you can glass them up during deer season. Ups your success to have dogs and mules. There would be significantly less success on Cat hunts if you didn’t use dogs.

@@mattacedo lol I am in Arizona and no. I've never hunted cats, but I could get you 5 in one day because of the amount of scouting I do and not seeking cats. They don't stray far from home in the remote spots. We don't have trees/woods in the lowlands where they can get out of line of sight. There's at least a dozen big cats within 5 miles of bartlett lake. I couldnt imagine how many there are around martinez lake or alamo lake.
