- Come chat with us over our 10 top favorite spring flowers to grow and why. This week I start in the Kitchen making a spiced rum cake for tea. Rilley and I sit down in the little cottage greenhouse to chat about our top 10 favorite spring flowers to grow and why each one makes the list. From home garden to production on the flower farm or in wedding flowers we share it all. The English tea and the rum cake are out of this world delicious so I've added the recipe below.

Moms Spiced Bunt Cake
Ingredients
¾ cup unsalted butter, softened
1½ cups granulated sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons rum extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1¾ teaspoons baking powder
1½ teaspoons ground nutmeg
¾ teaspoon kosher salt
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1¼ cups whole buttermilk
Glaze
2 1/4 cups confectioners' sugar
¼ cup whole milk
2 tablespoons spiced rum
Optional Ingredients
Grated fresh nutmeg, to garnish (optional)
Directions
Preheat oven to 300°F. Spray a Bundt pan with baking spray and or add a dusting of flour.
In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar with a mixer at medium speed until fluffy, 3 to 4 minutes, stopping to scrape sides of bowl. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in rum extract.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, nutmeg, salt, baking soda, and cinnamon. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture beating until just combined after each addition. Spoon into prepared pan.
Bake
until a wooden pick inserted near center comes out clean, 55 to 60 minutes. Let cool in pan for 15 minutes. Remove from pan, and let cool completely on a wire rack.
In a medium bowl, whisk together confectioners' sugar, milk, and rum until smooth. Pour over cooled cake. Garnish with nutmeg, if desired.
Obsessed by those alliums!
Us too! Happy growing.
My sons are now one nearly 31.. on 2 feb & second one is 27 .. we still go to London to the garden centre where i used to take the younger one when he was at middle school ..for memory’s sake.. at squires garden centre he used to pick up books on pepper pig..(we used to go look at fish there for sale for indoors & garden ponds…) those books are still there & he’s grown up.. i don’t drive anymore at 62.. he drives me there..we are 20 minutes on the motorway away from London.. lovely memories with children.. they grow up too soon
I am so thankful my kids like to still hang out with me. Antiquing and garden nursery's are there favorite outings
@@crowleyhouseflowerfarm they are such good kids .. because you’re such a lovely person & they take after us & learn from childhood onwards to mostly do what mum does.. my younger one used to follow me to my London garden.. it was a big space & many plants.. one day had a mouth full of slug pallets.. luckily i noticed big cheeks & he luckily hadn’t swallowed anything yet..got them all out from his mouth with my finger..he still waters the garden for me .. & loves my roses .. you’ve got lovely roses too
Happy New Year Wonderful People!!!!! Beautiful thumbnail and looking forward to seeing these gorgeous flowers in your stunning arrangements!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR"S!!!!!
It’s been wonderful catching up with you guys! I enjoyed this so much! Im starting ranunculus and dahlias from seed this year. I’ve planted a bunch of new things to experiment with as well. This will be my first year for hyacinths, crocus, snowdrops and muscari. I would’ve never thought to try to do an arrangement with anything that dainty, but you guys have inspired me! Love watching you sweet ladies!
Wonderful! I think you will get hooked on the spring blooming jewels of the garden! Let me know how starting dahlia seeds go, I have never done that.
Such a beautiful, fun and inspiring video! I just may have to make that cake too. 💖🌸👩🌾

Good to know about dry storing daffodils. Can you put them in water? 🌲💚🙃
It was fun hanging out with you and Rylie! Rylie has really picked up a lot of knowledge! You make it fun in the details. That Bundt cake had me drooling! Wishing you every success in everything from planting, harvesting to weddings and so much more in the upcoming year! God bless you all!❤😊

It's an El Nino year.
I am growing everything you have mentioned (different varieties) except anemones however my luck with sweet peas hasn't been good. I'm going to try to get them out very early this year Zone 6a Indiana. The rum cake looked delicious!
I think fall planting might be good or try really early, it will go for you one year I just know it! 😀
I always learn from you!
Q. Do you dry store the daffs in your cooler?
How long can you store them?
Will they open up once you take them out and add water?
Yes and yes I only store for a short time because we go through them fast but I think its about 30 days if stored right and in the right conditions.
Living in an apartment I just gave a tiny space. I have it filled with black eyed Susan’s and White Shasta daisies they fill in my little space and come back great every year.
I love tulips but so do the squirrels and rabbits after they’ve come up. ☹️🌲💚🙃
❤ looking forward to 2024 with you all
Love all the flowers you listed. I also love snowdrops and snowflakes for early spring.
Happy New year! Violas there are some taller varieties called bouqet Violas ( in norway we call them «stepmothers» (stemor) for some reasons,) , they can take a lot of cold weather!
Thanks for a great video ladies, I love all the flowers you mentioned and I’m really ready for some better weather and the first flowers of spring🌺one of my favourites are snowdrops as they are the first to flower here in NW England. I moved to a new house this year and the garden needs a lot of work but I’m really looking forward to your videos for inspiration. Thanks again ladies ps that cake looked delicious 😍
Aaawh I want some of your ranunculus. I bought your book this summer :) and for Christmas I got my first order of Toups products. Love your channel
❤
This was a fun video! I am so ready to see spring. I planted a shorter variety of alliums around my roses, I have David Austin Roses. I had heard that alliums are good at repelling June bugs. It was a constant battle with the roses that didn't have the alliums. The roses that did have the alliums did wonderfully. I also love the grape hyacinths! They are along the walkway to my front door...so lovely. I bought your book when it was first out and I love it!!! Happy New Year to each of you!
Ranunculus are by far my favorite but I struggle with height. Have been saving for a high tunnel so hopefully one day I’ll master those long stems! Your Shopify/patreon links don’t work on my end. I had to write it down and direct input it, not sure if I’m the only one
That is what I have found over the years as far as growing them outside, they just have way shorter stems. I do love them in the landscape anyway. I will check the links, thanks for letting me know.
As always lovely video.Thanks.Happy new year.
How do you pluck a daffodil? Put it out? 🌲💚🙃
happy new year! ❤
What a sweet lovely beautiful young lady Riley is.. i don’t have any girls..2 boys.. only wanted 1 girl but the lads are very caring towards me.. your turkey makes me laugh every time it gurgles.. some of your D A roses are discontinued here so i can’t order them.. they’re gorgeous windmere & crown princess margarite
Do you grow larkspur? I have mostly the blue/purple but some pink and white have self sown in my garden.
I do grow some, not a lot but it is really easy to start from seed in the garden. Its great in bouquets and for drying.
Don’t you find your Allium all smell like onions in your bouquets?
FYI…raNUNculus
