Why You Pee At Night - The Most Overlooked Reason

  • In this video, I argue that sleep-breathing problems such as obstructive sleep apnea and upper airway resistance syndrome should be the first reason to think about when you suffer from this nighttime urination. Nocturia (nighttime urination) is a widespread condition as you get older, but it’s also common in children as well as younger adults. There are many explanations for nocturia by experts, but obstructive sleep apnea is rarely mentioned. I also explain which hormone from the heart is made due to apneas to make you pee more at night, as well as frightening statistics on much higher death rates for people with nocturia.

    Here's a study showing that in patients with sleep apnea and nighttime urination, 79% of awakenings at night were due to obstructed breathing, rather than from a distended bladder. jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/article-abstract/621682.

      I have sleep apnea and also have nighttime urination. Is it possible that my bladder is more susceptible to being irritated by what I eat and drink?
      I'm asking, if my bladder can be irritated by foods and drink because of sleep apnea?

    • @222Lightning
      @222Lightning Před rokem

      @@Curtis_George I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure I came to understand from a Dr. Berg video that "what and when" you eat can affect your insulin at night and an insulin problem can cause or make Sleep Apnea worse. Eating too much salty foods or alcohol irritates the bladder. I like beer a lot....I definitely notice that if I drink 2-3 beers even if its in the first half of the day...my Nocturia is worse that night. I'd recommend trying to make your dinner a spinach salad w Garbanzo beans (my new favorite) or pan fried broccoli w olive oil. You will definitely feel that your bladder feels good and not get up at night as much. I'm not telling you to go vegan... I personally can't do this.....just go vegan for dinner. Try it.....see if it it makes a difference. Also try not to eat or drink 2-3 hours before bed...and not snack in the middle of the night. Eat enough also.........regardless if you skip breakfast or not. I usually skip breakfast myself. If you have obstructive sleep apnea....your solution is getting diagnosed then get one of those machines I would think. Drink lemon water also. This definitely good for the bladder.

    I am çoeliac and as my health deteriorated I woke more during the night. This condition is a killer and yet it was not mentioned in your ten minute informative talk. Many of the problems it causes are in the list you gave us. Please add coeliac disease to your list and encourage people to get tested before serious damage is done. I was sixty two and unable to digest anything properly before I found a diagnostic program that gave me possible things to test for, yet for years I had been visiting my GP with gastric problems and worsening symtoms, high blood pressure heart palpitations alongside weakness and tiredness. The tendency is to treat one symptom instead of looking for an underlying cause. I was told for years that I had irritable bowel syndrome. This is not a diagnosis but a description of what was happening to me from an irritant that ruined my life.

    • @doctorstevenpark
      @doctorstevenpark  Před 5 měsíci

      Great to hear. An oximeter is a good first step, but you can stop breathing multiple times every hour and still test negative for sleep apnea. It's because the sleep test only counts episodes lasting more than 10 seconds, so your oxygen levels don't drop too much. Even then, you can still make atrial natriuretic peptide, which creates more urine than usual while you sleep. This is called upper airway resistance syndrome (UARS). I have other videos on UARS.

I avoided that thanks to emplolying the Butayko Method for breathing etc., particularly the principle of taping one's mouth over with surgical tape at night. If you are not aware of this solution to Sleep Apnea, I will strongly encourage you to look into it. Some medical professionals have their doubts about it (though Butayko, who invented it, was in fact a high-ranking doctor himself), and one night when I was at hospital there was a nurse who woke me up and told me to remove the tape. Luckily for me, she had a young doctor with her, who said, "No, no, no, this is a great thing to do." He had some personal, very positive experience with the method and even tossed me a roll of surgical tape when he left (the nurse had to accept his decition, of course). I still mouthtape at night, but I do have a small worry in regard to the glue on the tape and whether it might be somewhat toxid, as you place it across the lips. I know there are dedicated tapes made for this specific purpose, but I can't find the brands around where I live (South West Ireland), and the sellers I found on German Amazon, who stock them, won't post out of their own country, and buying from amazon.co.uk. isn't worth the trouble since Brexit. To cut a long story short, I wonder if you might have a comment on the subject of the possible toxidity of the tape.

    Thank you Dr Park. I'm a retired but active, 75 year old New Zealander and have been having nocturia for about 10 years. I have had high blood pressure for about 18 years, but I have been listed as marginal all my adult life. Bedtime is usually 10.30-11pm and I wake for a full pee around 12.30pm. I then wake 90 minutes later at 2.00am for an extra dribble. The next one is usually at 4am and a final one at 6.00am, both of these are annoying dribbles that keep you half-awake if you don't see to it. I have slept right through on occasions when I have had a hard day's exercise and/or a super comfortable bed at a hotel/motel. But sleep apnea seems a high probability. Thank you.

    My Oura ring shows fragmented sleep and the sleep cycle app records my snoring & strangulated breathing. I wake up 2-3 times to pee, though I also drink too many liquids. I have self-diagnosed UARS which I attribute to menopause + hypermobility (lax tissues). Working at it by correcting my oral posture (back of the tongue on the palate) and doing exercises to tone and expand the upper airway. I’m convinced I can resolve this and prevent full-blown OSA. Appreciate your channel!

    A couple of years ago I went to a sleep clinic and had an overnight test. I had sleep apnea. They recommended a C-pap machine. THE first night I noticed that I only got up once or twice a night to pee. No one at the clinic mentioned that this may happen. I had been getting up 4-6 times a night. It was a nice surprise, and SO noticeable that I immediately recognized the connection. I then asked my doctor and he said that, yes, there is a connection.

      In theory, nighttime urination is worse sleeping on your back. Side is always better, and you can experiment to see which side you prefer. If you keep going onto your back, there are sleep positioning devices that you can find online. Good luck!

    Ranges from once to three times. The first times normally 2 to 2.5 hours after sleep. The more restless I am , the more times I pee. You have a point there though I think age and old bodies play a part.

      You gotta be kidding me. My body has been in use for 68 years and what I have done to the outside does not bear thinking about but what I have put into it over those years has given me some wonderful times. It stands to reason with that amount of abuse somethings are not going to work as they once did. After several visits to my doctors and specialists over the past 10 years or so I have come to the conclusion I just don't care any more. I am going to go out as I want to enjoying what I want to and if she don't like it tough luck.
      If I need to go twice a night so be it. If I got to go more that means my bladder is working. It's not worth the hassle going to a doctor every 5 minutes to find out why so and so is not working. I have had a marvellous life so far and what is happening now is okay.

      Yeah I mostly don’t think it’s that. I think it’s a lot of other stuff iron overload, high acid levels, many other things that can be correlated with age but not necessarily and larger and larger numbers of the young are afflicted with issues so I mostly don’t feel like it’s age it’s environmental poisons and other things or that’s my best bet right now. It’s a mix of reduced good increased bad in lifestyle and environment and invisible toxins that people mostly don’t notice.

    I used to wake up an average of three times a night just to urinate, I would later be diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and was prescribed the top of the line cpap machine. I've been using this machine for almost a year now and boy has it changed my life for the better. Not knowing that my sleep apnea had any correlation to my frequent washroom breaks at night but after watching this video, it made me realize ever since I started using the cpap machine those washroom breaks at night had stopped completely where now when I need to urinate, its only once after a nights rest and woke ready to start my day.
