  • They’re creepy and they’re kooky ..mysterious and spooky
This perennial TV favourite, well for those with an inkling of the absurdist and a different view on daily life.
For a legacy show of its vintage, it has considerable charm, intelligence and elegance that was considered an ideal to aspire to at the time.
I used to watch it with my father in 1973, so now I understand more what the narrative commentary is about, the show is perfectly cast and executed with low tech and high imagination, this family stood out like something from an alternative universe in the mid 60’s !
This is the kind of show you watch for a treat, it’s a cosy and a delightfully quirky world they inhabit and not a hint of malice, humanist in outlook and accepting of others, no matter how weird they are, as you can look at the craziness of life … from both sides.
The MGM DVD edition is adequate but episode listing on the cover could have been helpful.
The vison quality is good but I can’t help but think they could’ve remastered the vision, possibly found incidental audio bits and really brought the sound and vision quality to a higher level but this would’ve required finding archive production bits, assuming anything was kept and spending hours, painstakingly restoring all the elements.
So as is, it’s in keeping with the standard broadcast version quality, albeit dubbed from the original negative, you would assume, I don’t think colourisation is necessary.
Creating the main title was a labour of love, the title audio is from the 1988 Elvira CD, Elvira presents Haunted Hits, released in 1988 and still in print.
The Lurch vocal bits have been taken from the dvd optical audio and overlayed and it basically works ok.
Closing titles is dvd optical sound, remastered to give it more punch and sparkle.
The same title theme version is available on the Addams Family CD but the transfer on that CD is well below this quality, the original tv soundtrack album has Morricone style 60’s cheesy arrangements of the various character themes, a CD you’d only listen to once in a blue moon, on a stormy night LoL
Look out for the little musical treat at the end !
