- How To Grow Marine Macro Algae | Planted Saltwater Aquarium
In this video I explain how to grow marine macro algae to create a saltwater planted aquarium. Macro algae has many benefits within the marine habitat, from providing food and shelter for fish to soaking up excess nutrients; but it can be challenging to grow and maintain.

EDIT TO VIDEO: Please note only Caulerpa macroalgae are a single cell with many nuclei. All other macroalgae is multicellular AFAIK, however if i'm wrong about this no doubt somebody will correct me. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caulerpa
Everyday Aquarist cheers for correction 👌☺️
What can a person do, if the grapes suddenly turn pale and even fall off
You fill Sir David's shoes extremely well mate! Thank you for sharing your excellent knowledge
This is the second time around I've watched this. Il admit the first time around it didn't really grab me.
This time round though I truly appreciate how unique this video is. Your tank is stunning! It's really difficult to find display tanks that are far more natural with the use of macros. Spot on with the information as well.
My Macro Algae reef tank was by far the most beautiful Marine setup I've done!
Cardinals remind me of rams, I am thinking of doing tanks side by side one reef and one planted. But now I'm considering macro algae instead.
LOOK IN THE VERY FAR RIGHT ITS THE 1:25 "Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man"
SLAM BOY 😂👌
ONE WIGGLEY BOY
Nice video!!!! BTW, I was recently researching why algae are considered "protists" not "plants." With the greatest possible respect sir, I believe it is "1 kind of cell" (only 1 tissue), not only 1 cell. Part of the definition of being a plant is that plants have to have specialized tissues. For example, even mosses that do not have true roots, nor vascular tissue, do have one k ind of tissue for their rhizomes (which only anchor the moss, nutrients are passively absorbed from the soil whereas true roots with xylem would actively set ground water and minerals up the stem of a vascular plant) & mosses have another kind of tissue for the green part & when they make little spore forming structures, that is another kind of tissue. But algae, both the green film algae & the macro algae only have 1 k ind of tissue that; even if it takes different shapes in different parts of the macro algae, it is still all 1 tissue with the same cell type repeated over and over. Please understand, I"m not trying to be disrespectful all, just passing on the information I researched to figure out why everyone calls giant Kelp protists., not plants.
wcdeich4 this is so clarifying bc I was always skeptical when ppl say macroalgae is one cell. So it’s one kind of cell capable of doing a few different things. Great. ...almost like stem cells..
Cool.
Thank you for writing this
They are probably also more different on the genetic level than all other plants.
@@pascal590 BTW, I later learned, it does depend on the type of macroalgae. In the case of caulerpa it may actually be 1 huge multinucleate cell.
Caulerpa ability for rooting in rocks its crazy! Nice video!
Love this tank I just purchased a 75 gallon tank for seahorses. I would love to see a livestock list of what you have that is getting along well with the seahorses.
Very cool and informative video!!!
Great video and thank for the links also
Any macro talk, is good talk :)
Gahhhhh so many cardinals! I just have my one little Louie!
What type of pipefish and gobys do you have? Looks good!
Also do you have videos about your seahorses? I have a 40b seahorse tank with two mating horses and currently taking care of 50+ babys!
I am new to this hobby. However, i remodel homes and pools salt/chlorine and oceanography educated back in highschool for all 4 yrs. I enjoy critical thinking to find and search for an easier way. At times it can be curiosity, such as this one. So here is an idea. Why not place the plants in the sump and place a light above it. This way the a refugium is created along with kelp for nitrates elimination the way you have a cleaner aquarium for fish and coral? Am I on to something here 🤔?
That's a pretty established idea already
Yeah people already do that, but here the idea is to combine them
i have heard that you can keep macroalgae in brackish aquariums too. is this true? if so, do you know how the maintenance would differ to the macroalgae in a saltwater tank?
that's an awesome tank!
somewhat got it down you make me want to do a video lol
Any tips on attaching new macro to the rock?
Any recommendations for iron that we can buy in the usa?
Thank yu
Great video. Do you think this would work for a brackish mangrove setup. Something with a salinity range of about 1.010-1.015 perhaps? Cheers!
Not sure if macro algae can tolerate that Salinity
Is there any prepared artificial supplement for marine microalgae
Nice video :)
Do they require the same kind of light as corals?
Yes and freshwater plants
Great video! 😀
I brought myself some Ulva from the black sea last summer , it melted down in a couple of days , I think it was because of the high temperature of my tank , its a fish only with no cooling, at 82 degrees in the hot summer days . did not try any other macro . any suggestions would be much appreciated .
If I pick up macroalgae from an LFS that has been growing under a light 24/7 in a refugium, how would you go about weaning that macroalgae down to an ordinary day/night cycle?
Hello, maybe you can help me out mate, I just can keep macroalgae alive.
after a few days it just turns pale and liquifies.... no damage done but the algae just vanish.
water parameters:
pH:8.2
mg:1150-1200
Ca:440-460
Kh:8
0.024 sg
no3: 5 mg/l
po4: 0.3 mg/3
temperature is the same that you'd expect in a reef tank... and I've got no fish that could be munching on it....
I've tried dosing planted tank trace elements and iron... giving it iron tablets by the roots.... nothing works... it just melts away. :(
What species of algae is it?
Hey I just got some red ogo for my 10gal nano reef. Do you have any tips for this species?
How do you keep so many Bangai Cardinals without a pair killing the rest?
Hi there
I'm running a aqua one 195 using miracle mud and algae only no skimmer.
I'm using red sea iron kit but my readings are zero, I'm adding red sea iron but still shows zero. 60ml added in the last week is this normal?
I'd thought I would have some kind of reading but seems to be stripping it out as quickly as I put it in.
Kind regards Dan
Depends on the strength. Red Sea stuff is designed for corals not plants I think so the concentration is probably very low. Use seachem iron instead or something for freshwater plants
@@EverydayAquarist glad you pointed that out that its for corals as reading the small print the Red sea iron contains other elements like copper, zinc etc.
I will get some of what you said.
Thanks for the help and this is a great you tube channel 👍
Wait. Where does Blue Ochtodes fall into? Green, Red, or Brown?
Red
What type of lighting do you recommend on a planted tank. DOn't plants use a different spectrum from coral?
Join my new group about macro algaes and we can discuss it further facebook.com/groups/PlantedReef
What iron supplement do you use?
How your sea horses find the tank ?
Is 6 hours off light anuff for these algae ?
what do use for lighting i have an ati cora plus blue plus true atinic and a 10000k t5 bulbs 2 watt bulbs will that work
Very interesting. Being a planted freshwater guy, this is very appealing to me. Do corals mix well with macro algaes, and what fish do best with them?
Fast growing leathery corals and most lps will be fine however macro algae can be a bit smothering and invasive. Any non algae eating fish will be fine
Again an aquarium where pipefish and seahorses live alongside with other fish. I always thought they had no chance to compete for food with other fish, because they feed very slow... How do you manage this?
Pipefish and seahorse are ideal tank mates. I also selectively feed the seahorse mysis with tweezers
Are they a single celled or a colonial single celled protist?
I was wondering about that too, so I did some research; Turns out the ones he's showing are all likely multi-celled.
How many liters is it
Ok ...nice work with the macroalgae but ..I could not help notice the (easy to feed)Bangaiis alongside the (hard to keep) pipefish and seahorses.
How do u accomplish that? Gorgeous tank btw .
How did you attach the ulva lactuca
You cant. This grew naturally attached
What is that green macro algae in the front of your tank called? Would love to get some for my seapony tank
Caulerpa Prolifera
Macroalgae isn't one large cell, it's multicellular. Microalgaes can be unicellular, but it you looked at a seaweed under a microscope you could see individual cells
I think in this video I am referring to Caulerpa species which is unicellular
Macroalgae are multicelular. A chicken egg in your fridge is unicelular (most of the time)
@@EverydayAquarist You were clearly referring to all algae, not just the Caulerpa. That said, I looked up Caulerpa and you are right about that one; It is among the largest of single-celled organisms.
I have to grow macro algae in a small aquarium for my project. (I have to pick my macro algaes from Marmara Sea. Or buy them from a shop.) Can you tell me how to grow them step by step?
Hello did you contact me on Facebook the other day?
@@EverydayAquarist Hello, no, I didn't. You have a beautiful accent, problem is I am a French and I can't understand everything you told in the video.
Oh well if you can read a guide of how to keep freshwater aquarium plants its basically the same but without the co2 .
Ok, but how do I get them?
List of algae in this tank?
I have more recent videos showing this kind of thing
Hi, how often do you have to change the water on this tank?
30% every 3 months
@@EverydayAquarist Oh wow nice. What's the tank in this video?
💜👍
singular: alga ; plural: algae
Where do you get your macro?
I work in a fish shop so I can get it easily from Import
Aaron Armstrong go to ebay, that got alot and cheap,blu3,red,pink etc
Cool video man and intresting topic. Think ive got dragons breath growing in my tank from my life rock. Had LR in another tank for 2 years put it in new 9ft tank and its growing bigger every week. If u have the time please check out 1 of my videos to see if it is dragons breath please, thanks man. Keep up the videos ✌️️
Thanks for watching
Everyday Aquarist hey brother nice vid my man,Nice to c real people in this hobby talkin about this and know what they are doin, been in this hobby and dealing with all types of animals and insects...
but keep it real and stay u. great vid outstanding and u got a friend here.
blesses be...
Everyday Aquarist hey for got to tell u ebay gots it all blue, red, pink, green etc...just copped a shit loud.
hey u got a email I can reach out to u???
Uhh... Macro Algae are not "one-cell"/single-celled; I'm fairly certain they're almost all multi-celled.
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/01/150129160728.htm
Single cell references caulerpa. Source above. Thanks
@@EverydayAquarist The reference you gave says almost immediately that algae are plants....can't be trusted. I've been googling and googling and can't find anything myself that says macroalgae is unicellular.
@@nicolenicolerson5200 CAULERPA IS SINGLE CELL. I was incorrect about ALL algae being single cell, this video is old and I am always learning
From what i can tell most are multicellular but caulerpa is one giant cell that has many nuclei
Its very wrong to say that macroalgae is one large cell, who told you that?
