Saxon - The capital of apricots
It is a municipality, in the district of Martigny, in the canton of Valais, in Switzerland.
This Valais village of Saxon is located between Riddes and Martigny , on the left bank of the Rhône Valley, at an altitude of 465 meters at the station and 533 meters at the Place du Village, in front of the church. More than 4,800 inhabitants live in Saxon, at the foot of the Valais Alps and the famous Pierre A Voir summit , which culminates at 2,473 meters above sea level.
The Apricot, from Asia to Saxon
The apricot comes from the high mountainous regions of North-East China where it is said to have been domesticated more than 4,000 years ago by the Tajiks or by another ancient people, who selected varieties particularly rich in sugar. It was the Greeks and the Roman legionaries who introduced it around the Mediterranean, a century before our era. It was imported from Italy to France from the middle of the 15th century, but it was only during the Renaissance (18th century) that it became known and that the cultivation of the 13 varieties of apricots known at that time developed. in this country. At this time, it was imported to Basel and Germany. In Valais, the apricot was reported for the first time in 1812, on the hillside of Sion-Nendaz, near Saxon. Apricot cultivation will develop in the orchards of Saxon thanks in particular to Joseph Sablier, who imports the varieties cultivated in the Lyon region.
    Weather conditions
The apricot is grown in a generally warm temperate climate . It likes sun and light when flowering. The apricot tree is a typical tree of continental climates which, when in winter rest, resists very well to cold down to minus 20°C. It has adapted well to Valais , an area known for its limited rainfall (the driest region of Switzerland). However, it is more easily cultivated on the hillside (where the soil is well drained) and more readily on the left bank than on the right bank. As the flowers fear the spring frost, if it blooms too quickly, the risks are greater. On the left bank, facing north, flowering is later than on the right bank; there is therefore less risk of freezing .
    Apricots production in Saxon
It was at the end of the 19th century that Albano Fama, a cousin of Joseph Fama who had made Saxon famous thanks to his casino, launched the future canning factory DOXA (Vellino et Cie), which would promote the development fruit crops in the region, and in particular that of apricot. From 1886 to 1927, this preserves factory entered into the legend of the Rhône Valley: the press and gourmet confectionery enthusiasts were full of praise for its products, and this is how the destiny was built. Saxon apricot plantation , which would continue through the 20th century.
Le Sentier de l'Abricot - Apricot Trail
The Sentier de l'Abricot is a thematic trail that will introduce you to apricots in a new way. It leaves from the CFF station in Saxon, between Riddes and Martigny and climbs into the orchards on the heights of the village. Twelve explanatory panels along the path will help you discover the apricot a little better: its history, its use, its varieties, and many other things. The Sentier de l'Abricot offers a short route (2 hours) and a large one (3 hours).
