I would love to see on this case study, where the injection timing for injector cyl 1 (bank1) and cyl 2 (bank2) is compared to the in-cylinder pressure waveform for both banks. First with CAM sensor plugged and then with cam sensor unplugged. This would be very hard to diagnose without known good waveform for the crank-cam😎Thank you once again Mr. Thompson 👍

I know that the issue you’re concerned with isn’t due to the aftermarket intakes, but I’ve had to tell many customers that the only way I can make their car run correctly and/or turn off the check engine light is to remove their aftermarket garbage and replace it with the OEM stuff. They generally don’t like that lol.
I’ve had multiple Nissans come in with a no-start due to cam timing, but the one that sticks out in my head is an Infiniti G37. It had just gotten an oil change at a lube shop that always referred business to us, then the same day, it wouldn’t start. It had a code set for cam/crank correlation on one bank. I started it (the same way you did) and did a compression waveform. The compression waveform showed the cam timing was accurate, but the cam/crank waveforms showed it was off. I pulled it apart, stared at the thing for a while and didn’t see an issue, the mechanical timing marks were correct. I knew from my waveforms that the issue had to be with the cam sprocket (where the trigger wheel was at), so I had the advisor order one (it was in stock, that’s a hint). Once I had the two side by side, I could see that the cam trigger wheel had shifted. It’s just pressed on. Not sure how or why it shifted, but it was. Told the customer it needed a cam sprocket, but recommended a full chain and tensioner replacement too (which they did). After the repair, the cam/crank waveform was perfect. I have no idea how someone without a scope and the knowledge to use it properly would have ever found it.
EDIT: I was still early in the video when I posted that. Crazy that this car had the exact same problem as the one I worked on.

    Hey Bernie,
I was fighting with my 370z and without a scope I had no idea this could be an issue. I most definitely will be purchasing one and figuring out the ropes. I found your video 2:30 two mornings ago after the car sat 2 years with no start, last night the car finally ran and it ran great.
    Thanks for everything!

  • @evan010101
    @evan010101 Před rokem

Hey Bernie, just repaired an Elgrand with VQ35DE - had the EXACT SAME issue as you did here, even though the design of the pulse wheels is different on the Elgrand, still just a friction fit that must have got knocked while doing a rebuild and changing the chain. Car wouldn’t run with bank 1 sensor plugged in, even plugging in with it running would kill it. No codes. Did the whole diagnostic process with a scope and looking for reference traces found your video. Couldn’t believe it was the same issue, wish we found it earlier! Thank you!

GREAT VIDEO! I know dealer technicians that struggle with this mainly due to lack of scope use.
The target wheel is pressed on. These engines tend to burn oil, so when the oil gets low, the phasers rattle, and slowly move over time. This 3.7 is very popular on the Infiniti side, and this problem is common.

Once I found the issue I swapped the correct size bolt and the car fired up and ran with no further problems. The sensors are so important on this car.

2008? Odd, because the 370 wasn't made production until 2009. I should know, I own one. Also another known issue with these on a no start no dtc sitch is the steering wheel lock failure, very common and can be remedied by simply removing a 10 amp fuse near the battery compartment.

I take 5 minutes to diagnose any Nissan when they crank but no start I unplug the cam sensors and the ECU goes to its base setting and will use only the crank sensor to turn on. Will ignore the cam sensor if it's off position. It will turn on and run but then most likely idle rough but it will turn on if it's only a couple teeth off. I learned this trick with a Nissan quest v6 would not turn on and would not set any codes the previous shop before me said it was theft system or bad ECU . Turns out the guides where worn and timing jumped 2 teeth Ecu won't let it turn on when detects timing is not right

    Amazing class!!
Just want to clarify the angle of error you mentioned.
The crank sprocket has 26 teeth and the intake cam has 52 teeth.Counted the teeth on the video.
To see that error of around 15 degrees off would indicate a 360/52=13.8 deg =1 tooth on the cam.
But if you had a enhanced scanner connected to the car and had that pid available then you would see a +- 6.8 deg error on the crank cam relation on that right bank?Or the same 15 deg? I just got confused when you plotted the 720 deg on 1 cam cycle and still found the 15 value.
If you dont know how many teeth are in the cam or crank sprockets would be hard to call on the amount of teeth off right?
And since you dont have a single notch on the crank pattern i dont know how the pcm knows when is the TDC on this car.
Maybe a combination of everything?Thats why it wont start if 1 pattern is off?But it runs in the absence of 1 cam signal?
Very interesting video.I just cant believe how much im learning with you Mr. Thompson. Thanks a lot.
