  • Hope this brings some understanding to the Keith Poche incident at Toledo Bend. Understanding the BASS rules, what we are allowed to do as anglers as well as what we are not allowed to do.

G! First I wanna say, I look up to you, love what you do , love following you, and will always pull for you in every derby you fish. BUT I have to play devils advocate here. You touched on this and I’ll take it a step further, when you got a DQ at the classic, you honestly felt in your heart you didn’t do anything wrong. Hell I didn’t think you did anything against the rules. But an interpretation deemed you did. Keith is in the same boat. Now that may be comparing apples to oranges, but after reading the rules myself it was kind of grey for me as well as to watching what Keith did and determining if he broke the rules. Should he have called hank? Absolutely. But I don’t think for a minute that if Keith thought he was breaking rules, and would then get a DQ for that day that he would have done what he did. The same with you at the classic. I’m not saying he is right, and I’m not saying you are wrong by any means. All I’m saying is in the heat of the moment with everything at stake on the line that it would be easy to make a possible wrong decision. And it’s hard for me to stand on one side or the other without actually being there. Love what you do G, you and lulu keep up the awesome work y’all do.

In the MLF BFL tourneys, the rule for Alabama rigs are 5 spinners, 5 lures, 3 hooks max or state rule applies if more restrictive. Alabama rig hook requirements vary from 1 to unlimited depending on the state, but the MLF rule takes priority. Therefore not leaving tournament water supersedes what the state may allow others to do. Anyone who has fished tournaments enough knows that. He broke the rules.
Side note - I am not claiming that I know what was in the mind of Keith Poche but here is a thought. Knowing that an angler suppose to approach the director with any questions about the rules, he may not have done so on purpose. He went to the governing authority over Toledo Bend knowing they would tell him its legal to jump that roller. No one would see him do it. Then if he won the tournament he would pass the lie detector test when ask if he did anything illegal. I'm probably reaching. Some say I am not.
BTW - CZcamsr Cerebral Tackle makes a compelling case why Keith Poche broke the rules. Watch czcams.com/video/1tWkSbGCv7s/video.html&ab_channel=CerebralTackle

    @wwp2213 Před rokem +1

GMAN, I appreciate your stance, but I'd like to clarify 2 things you have stated that's not true.
    1. You stated that in the rule book it states you can not run over dry ground. I personally fished the Open on Toldeo, and I signed the "book " (technically, it was docu signed email). I just read it again, and it DOES NOT have that statement in the rules.
    2. You stated that Keith did not use the roller system when, in actuality, he crossed right where the rollers are located, the rules do say he can't get out of the boat to drag his boat over the rollers so he just used horse power from the motor.
Here's the only issue I have with BASS on this ruling, their ruling was Keith left tournament waters while going over the rollers. Had they DQ'd him for safety (like your Classic DQ), then I could agree, but leaving tournament waters is just BS.
    Good luck at Sabine.

displace, or engage in any type structure removal from private property (dry land) during off
limits, official practice or competition. Moving structure to include sawing of logs or other
obstructions in the water is only allowed if laws permit. No competitor may place any object that
may impede or cause danger to boaters"

"Hey Trey Swindle, I know the rulessay this, but I'll tell you what...see if you can get hold of the insurance man and get them to up your Liability right quick, so you can fish." (which never happened) See, you cannot allow rules to be subject, they must Always be objective..."Boat must remain in tournament waters at all times...**Unless you are jumping a levee dam dirt road.**..." that last part isnt there so you see it is clear, but the argument is over interpretation, and doing what Poche did WITHOUT FIRST CONSULTING HWeldon...he opened himself up to having his case litigated by the BASS Panel. Theu decided in a black and white fashion.

@Gary West the whole point is that rules must be universal and objective and very clear cut, otherwise they aren't rules. Trey Swindle, the Eufala incident, and this Poche deal only prove to me that BASS IS TOP NOTCH because they ain't budging for anybody when it comes to their rules. I can and will support that.

In west Louisiana there’s the one where this happened at but most people don’t know is there’s another trolley an a roller system on the pearl river in southeast Louisiana that has been used before back in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Also a few more around south Louisiana that you can run high tide but you get in there and the water falls out and you can’t get out without them in a bigger boat or bass boat

I think you are definitely in a great position to make this video. In my opinion, as one of those that has not signed the dotted lines on the rules, I wish BASS would have come out and mentioned the “crossing dry land” portion you mentioned. I think the rule they say Keith violated, rule 15, was not a very good reason and Keith I think did a good job of refuting them on that. He never left his boat, and the water he went to was tournament waters. Regardless as you so said so well, when you live in that gray zone like Keith does, and I’m a fan of his, this is bound to happen. He could have asked.

Another thing people do not realize is that his coangler exited the boat so he could jump the damn. Why? Because of safety so it is an unsafe act while in a tournament. That in itself is grounds for disqualification

    14. PERMITTED FISHING LOCATIONS:
Tournament waters shall be established by the Tournament Director for each tournament. Each competitor must obtain this information from the B.A.S.S. Tournament Department. Any water within these boundaries that are legally and obviously posted “Off-Limits” or “No Fishing,” as well as the live-bass-release area established by the Tournament Director, will be off-limits to tournament competitors and will be announced at the Tournament Briefing. Only that water open to all public fishing will be considered tournament waters. Waters deemed off-limits by authorities or tournament officials should be treated like a wall. No boats or casting behind that boundary while fishing. All angling must be done from the boat. In states where landowners have the legal authority to claim private property, these areas must be posted or they will be considered tournament waters unless instructed otherwise by tournament officials at any time during the event. If forced to leave, a competitor must report the incident to tournament officials as soon as possible. Any water to which a competitor is barred access becomes off-limits to all competitors.
Prior to 8 a.m. local time the day before the tournament is scheduled to begin, any questionable areas must be brought to the attention of tournament officials to be considered tournament waters. Questionable areas will be off limits until a determination can be made with authorities and may be announced in the briefing or via text for all to know unless determined otherwise by tournament officials.
Tournament officials reserve the right to restrict or enhance tournament waters based on conversations with local authorities. Competitors are not allowed to cut, remove, displace, or engage in any type structure removal from private property (dry land) during off limits, official practice or competition. Moving structure to include sawing of logs or other obstructions in the water is only allowed if laws permit. No competitor may place any object that may impede or cause danger to boaters.
    15. COMPETITORS MUST REMAIN IN BOAT:
During the competition days, competitors must not depart the boat to land fish or to make the boat more accessible to fishing waters. You are not allowed to use a winch, pulley, come along, cable, rope, or similar device/tools to gain access to tournament waters. Competitors may not shift a majority of their weight outside the boat and onto a dock or other object outside the boat for the purpose of landing a bass or accessing a fishing spot. A bass that cannot be landed without the angler leaving the boat or shifting his weight outside the boat must be released immediately. While keeping the majority of weight in the boat anglers are allowed for boat protection to push or shove off objects while landing a fish to be counted as legal. Competitors are allowed to leave the boat to retrieve a lure. All fishing by that competitor must cease until the competitor is back in the boat. Only then may another cast be made.
Boats must remain in tournament waters during tournament days. Competitors must leave from and return to official checkpoints by boat. Anglers must remain in the boat at all times except in case of dire emergency or with permission from the Tournament Director. Exceptions are spelled out in rules 5, 15, and 18. In such an emergency or with permission from the Tournament Director, competitors may be removed from their boat to either a boat operated by other competitors or a rescue boat designated by the tournament director. Partners must remain together at all times, in sight of their catch, under the conditions cited above, in order for their catch of that day to be scored in the tournament with the following exception. In breakdown situations and with a tournament official’s permission, Co-anglers may transfer their boat’s (Pro’s and Co-angler’s) fish to another competitor’s boat and ride to check in, and they may leave their Pro with the disabled boat. In such cases, the co-angler must stay with their catches at all times and assisting boat’s partners should verify the catch. Any angler whose boat is disabled and rides with another competitor or rescue boat to weigh in is not allowed to fish. In the event of a needed restroom break or refueling situation at a marina gas pump, partners are allowed to leave the boat; however, in that event, all fishing must cease until partners are back together in the boat. If a competitor violates any of the above conditions (without contacting a tournament official by phone or other means or to report an emergency or breakdown), competitors must cease fishing at this point, and their catch must be verified by a tournament official in order to be counted in the tournament. If after the emergency situation is resolved by tournament officials and enough time is left for the competitor to resume fishing, a restart will be allowed, and the competitor will continue and their catch will be counted. This applies only to dire emergency situations as determined by the Tournament Director or his designee. Towing boats on trailers during tournament hours is prohibited, except by the direction of tournament officials.
