Thank you so much for sharing. I have had two canaries over the last 11 years, I only bred one at the time. Now the second one has died and I don't think getting another one, it's too difficult when you're left with an empty cage... and an empty house.
I miss their song, the sun and the joy they were bringing to me.
I will always love and respect these little wonderful creatures :)

Love your video! I raise canaries, too. I have the Staffords. Thank you for posting this, it made my evening!

Thank you for the information. I'll pass it on to the professors. I only knew there was a Welsh Gaelic. I found your Dublin bird market blog. Also a Jan 2008 newspaper article about a December raid. The paper made it sound like the end of the market.

Very nice Birds, some good looking Red factor canaries in your collection, Cock birds are fetching 25 euro each and a Canary x Goldfinch would go for as much as 60 euro here in Dublin.

I'm glad your canary is singing. Isn't it a lovely sound? The birdsong is actually from a CD I got from Robirda recorded in her aviary. When my birds stop singing, as they sometimes do, I'll play the CD. My canaries also sing their hearts out when I vacuum.

Thank you. Our local market has changed a lot. I used to get $100 for the red factors. More recently, I could barely get $50 for any canary & had to let some go for just $30. I stopped breeding until the market improves. Nobody in our area has successfully bred Canary x Goldfinch.

Thank you. I had 2 males for a year before I finally found a hen and started breeding. Over he next 2 years I bought from breeders who were going out of business. That's how I got the variety of colors. Demand is really down now, so I have only a dozen canaries & I really limit my breeding.

Yes, hens chirp and sometimes sing. Among my video clips, there is one canary hen singing. She laid eggs so I know she is definitely a hen. I've bought birds that were identified as males because of their song only to have them lay eggs.

@P43066 I am so sorry about your canaries. They are truly wonderful little birds. I hope I can breed enough birds to keep canaries in my home for as long as I live.

Hello, Re; answer to The Dublin Bird Market 1950s my earlier response failed?
the video is narrated in our native irish Gailge language ie Gaelic, however only two persent of irish people converse in gailge and theres no connection to eather Scottisn or Welsh gaelic. The Dublin bird market has a long standing tradition of been a predominantly male working class hobby and has been written into Irish folklore as one of the oldest Bird markets in the world, its still going strong.

Hard to say without knowing the dimensions of the cage. Birds do better with room to fly across a cage rather than up & down in a tall cage. Try to set up the perches for diagonal flights. Also watch for the bird's tail bobbing when it's on a perch. If you see that, your bird is overweight and needs either less seed or more exercise. Good luck!

I just bought a pair of Norwich to breed in the spring, are they hard to breed or same principal? Where Can I get a CD for them to start singing?
    Thanks

Do hens chirp? My canary keeps chirping and I don't know if its a boy or a girl because of it. S/he chirps a lot when I play videos of canary songs. Sometimes its a sing song way but only up to three notes.

Sorry, I though I had replied long ago. My birds' cages are 18" to 24". I've used smaller cages in the past. Just watch to make sure your bird does do some flying across the cage rather than just up & down.
